UCLA anyone?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
damn got into Irvine? thats pretty damn good man.

i think its pretty reasonable after a bulk of the application process has passed. i would assume if you asked now they might be a bit busy to discuss that...but i think closer to the summer might be a bit better? ive read on here that some schools dont mind doing stuff like that, you can try your luck and call sometime in the near future and ask if thats cool. most likely have to set up something with the dean of admissions via appmt.

anyone get a status page update yet? i interviewed in early november... still waiting to hear back. i thought they'd have sent some letters out by now.

no, I haven't gotten a status page update or a letter either. I interview in early november.

411 said last week that they wern't sending out the first round of acceptances until late Jan. I think he/she called.

Update:

I dropped by the admission office around 3:30pm today (1/20), to drop off a letter of interest. I asked a staff there and she said no letters will be mailed out in January. They'll start going out in February.

(Edit: I was referring to Post-Interview Final Decision Letters, just to clarify)

Thank you CaleE. No longer will I stalk the mailperson. Interestingly, this relieves me because the delay provides an opportunity to complete all my projects and assignment, so I may either celebrate or recuperate after the letters are mailed. Anyhow, my best wishes to each person waiting. I hope, in any case, can't do more besides HOPE, that each of us ends up where we'are INTENDED to end up.

Meanwhile, you can send them a short Letter of interest. I did that yesterday. It may not help, but it won't hurt.

it's not silly. i got my seconadary a little over a week ago. so check your status page and see if it says anything about it. that's how i figured it out. the snail mail letter came several days later.

People say I bring good luck, maybe I should walk by the admission office on Tuesday (I walk by there a lot anyway, to goto the biomed library that's like 10 meters away, or to the interpreter office that's 2 minutes walk away)

don't worry, you're not in it alone........

I still haven't received a secondary from UCLA....

and when I check my status page....... "nothing......"

weird..........

hook it up!

I assume that if I haven't heard from UCLA about an interview by now the deck is stacked against me, but have any out of state applicants received an invite recently? It's snowing with some occasional freezing rain here and I want to get out! 🙂

So....it's February....any post-interview news? I think UCLA's my top choice, and this wait is driving me crazy.

Men i feel your pain, waiting sucks but at the same time today happens to be the first working day of the month-6:38am to be exact- so unless you expect the adcoms to meet on a sunday to mail out acceptances, i would be a little bit more patient. By the way, what the hell am i doing an this site at this time. Damn, i need to get a life🙁

anyone call the admissions office?

Yeah, I just went last week but does anyone know their usual timeline from year to year? Obviously nothing is coming soon for me... but I'm curious. UCLA is notoriously slow right? They were the last school to give me an interview.

they are deciding or approving acceptances now or something like, but they are doing something. accd to the office, they are sending out acceptances mid-February. one month late!!! good luck!

i asked the ucla students about this and every single one of them answered me with a smile....saying that they are just really really slow...and not to be worried if you dont hear from them mid feb...cause they will be taking people months later as well...

i heard on another thread that ucla weighs the mcat more heavily than gpa....does anyone know anything about this?

Don't be bitter. I went to UCLA for undergrad (Go Bruins!!!) and am confident I will get in. Keep in mind though my grandfather donates quite a bit to the school. If you have any type connection use it. Otherwise don't worry about it. UCLA med school is over-rated. UCLA = couldn't get in to Stanford.

OMG...you'll get flamed for this. Many people will choose UCLA over Stanford b/c of the location (Palo Alto's not for everyone) and tuition (Although Stanfor'd financial aid is very great).

Please don't jump to conclusion like that...as for your connection...it may or may not help. I think it may give you a slight edge in borderline case, otherwise I doubt it'll seriously change the decision.

Nice response CalBeE 🙂 I second that.

Dude, I'm glad you have money that can make up for lack of brainpower. Obviously, you can't get into UCLA on your own credit.

wait...i just realized that you don't even have the money...it's your grandfather bailing you out!

got nothing against people going to stanfUrd med....
but id easily pick ucla over stanfUrd. easy.

and the fact that i am true berkeley blue for life could have factored into my decision.

location, tuition, friends, and i like short white coats 😉.

I'd have made the opposite decision. The thing is, staying at the same school (AND same campus!) for a decade doesn't sound too appealing to me!

Does anyone know if you can take undergraduate courses at UCLA for free while enrolled in the med school?

would you have the time to even do that? do you want credit or you just want to learn/have an interest in the material...i suppose you can just sit in on the lectures??

i want to do this as well. some classes because of the lack of space dont let you just sit in. but then again i prolly would want to get tested on the material i am interested in or else it might just go in one year and out the other 😉 but esp. for languages classes i would prolly wanted to get tested.

Penn and Yale made a big deal about how you can take undergrad/other grad school courses at no extra charge. I probably wouldn't take very many outside courses in med school, but it would be nice to know that I have that option and maybe take some fun literature courses if pure medicine gets to be too much. You make a good point though that I could probably just audit.

Edit: Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder jlee; I'd probably also be interested in enrolling in and taking tests in Spanish courses (and not just medical Spanish).
