If you're talking about the General Clinic Volunteer Program @ UCLA SOD, you'll rotate around between areas like AEGD, sterilization, chartroom, etc. Most of the time, you'll just do whatever work they ask you to do (i.e., packing cotton into baggies, finding charts for the dental students). Part of the required 80 hours is to shadow the 3rd and 4th year students in the clinic, which is probably the coolest aspect because a lot of them are really nice and will give you advice.

At the end, if you're a good volunteer (your supervisor will be given a feedback sheet for you at the end of every rotation, which is kept in a folder by the coordinator) they'll usually be willing to write you a LOR. Back when I did it in 2014, they also offered me this summer extension thing where I could do more stuff in radiology, but I didn't end up doing it.
Don't be nervous! I was nervous too but it's pretty chill 🙂 Good luck!Thank you so much for replying. Yes, it requires 80 hrs. I have an appointment with them this coming Friday. I'm nervous.

I did that program last year. You don't really get to shadow dentists, but it can be counted as general volunteering hours when you apply to dental schools. Most of the departments have you do very basic stuff like shredding papers, taking the trash out, organizing charts, calling patients and listening to voice messages at oral diagnosis, scanning forms at radiology, packing cotton rolls and very basic stuff like that. Sometimes at oral diagnosis, they let you shadow dentists for like an hour, but the rest don't even let you do that. The only dental related part of this entire program was shadowing 3rd and 4th-year dental students maybe for 15 hours out of that 80 hours total. After completing 80 hours, you can ask the coordinator of the program for a letter of recommendation.
