hmmm... i do know that there is some AAMC rule (along with the only holding one acceptance by may 15) that says med schools have to have sent out enough acceptances to equal their incoming class size by march 15 (although i've seen this date debated and some ppl say that it is actually by march 30). so maybe that's what the lady in the office meant, if they have to send out at least 121ish acceptances by the middle (or end) of this month

there is no way UCLA will hand out that many acceptances in a two/three month timeframe, regardless what the AAMC dictates. The first batch of acceptances went out about five weeks ago, right?

Yeah, the first batch of acceptances went out about a month and a half ago.

Doesn't UCLA interview all the way through April? Because then you're looking at receiving news all the way through May. So, if they accept people to fill their class already, what happens to those who interviewed February - April?

Does my question even make sense.. :scared:

anyway, may I ask what the earliest someone's heard post-interview, in terms of status change.

yep, unless historically UCLA has offered interviews strictly for waitlist spots (ala MCW). But I never heard this for UCLA this early, anyone?

my letter was sent today.....

I keep wondering if this batch is similar to previous batches? Are there gonna be any waitlists/rejections in this batch?? Has anyone looked at last year's posts to see any trends???

For those who got their status changed, how did your interviews go? Do you have a strong app? Did you get into most schools you interviewed at before ucla??

Thanks guys and GOOD LUCK!!!

well, most schools will over accept, since not everyone is going to say yes/hold a spot. so UCLA would, in theory, have to send out at least 121 acceptances, although i would assume that they initially accept more than that (before they turn to the waitlist). hope my answer makes sense. if you interview after feb, you still have a chance at getting one of those initial acceptances

hey UCLAstudent, thanks. when did you interview again?

I interviewed in October, but I wouldn't use that to gauge anything since Jan. 25 was the first day that ANY post-interview decisions were sent out ... so it's not like I could have heard any earlier. I don't know if that makes sense. My brain is soccer-ed out.

Yea... i interviewed in november and i still haven't heard anything... i had a status change that said a final decision letter has been sent (march 4th) so i'm freaking out right now... i'll let y'all know what happens... but for now, good luck all!

march 4th? Didnt most people get the date march 7th?
how did your interviews go?

Interviews went alrite i guess. Mine's was kind of a weird case though cause i was interviewing for the md/phd (so i had 5 interviewers and we talked mostly about research). I was rejected from the Md/PhD program late january/early february and was waiting on the md decision...

ag! mine is updated too! letter sent, what will i do next week not obsessing over ucla, one way or another!?>!@

My status page got updated and my heart skipped about five beats. I doubt that this batch is all acceptances due to my personal experiences with this application cycle so far, and I am praying and praying and praying and praying that this is a waitlist.

I interviewed November 18th, by the way.

i interviewed in oct, mine went pretty good, and i would say my numbers are competitive there. i dont know that i got in but i do know that i will be done applying to medical school next week and i think this is a cause for celebration regardless of my ucla letter

Thanks! Good luck with UCLA too!

I was looking at mdapplicants.com...man, a lot of UCLA undergrads got in.

what the date next to 'final decision letter sent', march 4th or march 7th? I think we might be dealing with two diff batches.

Perhaps this batch is mixed?? I dont think anyone can really determine anything with a modicum of certainty until the actual letters are received--though speculation can be both fun and an eye-gouging experience at the same time...I personally didnt expect to even get a secondary application--let alone an interview! And so whatever happens from here is completely a bonus...therefore, I am not expecting to get in right away but you really dont know until the letter arrives...once again, good luck to all those waiting! :luck:

Mine says March 7th.

mine is march7. when do you guys expect to get your letter? im in AZ and im thinking it will come friday or saturday.

breaking news!!!!!!!!!!!
I just called their office and got this out of them.
They have started sending out post-interview rejections as well and this batch is going to be a mix. Also, if you havent heard yet, you will definitely hear this month. So I guess not having heard yet isnt the kiss of death.... yet.
That said, these receptionists they have working at their office are known for their double speak and providing misleading info.
I suggest someone else call to confirm this info.

Good luck waiting for your letter!

Just a word of "caution": back in February, my letter was also mailed on a Tuesday. I actually didn't receive it until the following Monday--almost a week after it had been sent!

And I live in the Sacramento area (about 380 miles away), so it's really hard to judge how long the letters will actually take to get to your address.

:luck: :luck: :luck:

has anyone had any luck calling to get their decision after status change? theyve been really good at shutting me down on the phone when asking for info. lemme know if anyone had tried.

Um...yay? :scared:

My interview invite was sent out on a Tuesday, I got it on a Saturday. I live less than an hour drive away from UCLA.

Must be all that traffic. 😕

EDIT: By the way, Long_John, I remember you saying about a month ago that the next batch after those two Tuesday batches were supposed to be the mix of decisions. So I gather that your intel is right.

You're going to love this story. Yesterday around noon (a few hours before my status changed, I gather), I called them to ask whether I could send additional rec. letters. The lady over the phone was like, well, sure - and then I said, I interviewed a while back and I hear decisions are coming out soon, should I rush them? And she asks for my AAMC ID and then she goes, "Well... ... (I was like 😕 ), yeah, you should them in soon, because they're going to decide on your file real soon. And I asked, so I should express send them in two days? And she said, yeah...you should rush them.

What did they want me to do? Teleport them? I guess the secretaries either (1) have no idea when certain files will be decided upon or (2) she knew the final decision already and she was just trying to cover. From the sound of her voice, it really, really sounded like (2). It sounded like a bad (2). 🙁

i called ucla about my final decision letter a month ago b/c i had been waiting over a week since my status change. the lady was actually pretty nice about it - i think depending on who you get, you'll be able to get an answer out of them. she told me that they are not allowed to give final decisions over the phone but then she added quietly that i shouldn't worry because good news was headed my way.

good luck making those calls!

"we are not at liberty to give out status over the phone" = rats!!@! four more days of freaking out.

ask them if the batch sent this day is acceptances, rejections, etc.

dude i gave the lady my aamc id, she says "decision sent, we cant tell you what your decision is," it would have been remarkably clever of me to then say, "weeell, could you tell me if all of the letters sent are, um , acceptances?!"

i suggested she cough twice if i got in or sneeze three times if a waitlist but she told me to go to hell.

im gonna do my best to chill out and wait till friday-saturday-april, whenever the damn letter finally comes. i suggest we all do the same instead of trying to weasle the adcom secretary into giving us more info.

here's like the only way you can find out early guys (by early i mean before the mail arrives). you have to go by the admissions office in person and ask what the decision on your file is IN PERSON. then they will tell you.

Too bad for me then that I live a 5 hour plane ride away in another country...I agree with OpinionKitten--its all about the lamaze-style deep breathing and just waiting it out versus harassing the Adcom secretaries...

I already have the sinking feeling.....I had the same feelings with duke and northwestern and i was right. meh...

Just so you guys know, my letter was sent on a Tuesday, and I didn't receive it until Saturday. I live pretty close to UCLA. They most likely don't mail the decision on the exact date listed on the status page.

It's interesting that they decided to do things on a Monday this time.

Good luck!

i interviewed in november and my status page hasnt changed. anyone else in this position?

Seriously, UCLA is so random. Even their secretaries are random - some are super sweet, and some are rather curt.

same hear, interviewed late nov., no status change yet 🙁

BTW, for people anxiously waiting their decisions from UCLA. I thought this might be helpful in gauging your chances.

I just stumbled upon this, so don't flame me for this. I'm not trying to start the infamous AA discussion here. I think this site was created for that reason. But I am just interested in the plot for how it applies to me. This is simply to show the stats of people who got into UCLA, so one can take a comfort in the fact that one might get in or one can realize that UCLA ain't gonna happen for them. The latter is my situation. I just needed to see it in this scatter plot to realize it. Oh well, C'est la vie. 😉

This batch is a bunch of rejections.

The admissions office can't tell you that so they just lie and say that it's a 'mix.' If they told you that the batch is all rejections, then you would automatically know that you got rejected. Iggyboops and Long John's conversations with the admissions office further corroborate this prediction.

If I was the secretary in that office and saw that you got accepted, I wouldn't tell you to send in the additional letters of rec!!

Unfortunately, I am also part of this batch...oh well.... 😡

How did you find that out? Did you get your letter already? Were you a march 4th or 7th status change? 😱

I highly, highly doubt that this is all rejections. That would be stupid, and UCLA isnt stupid at least not that much. They first want to at least accept enough people to fill their spots or at least be pretty close to it before they start rejecting.
And in past years, at least from SDN threads, there has never been a batch before March 15 that was all post-interview rejections so i doubt that is the case.

I don't think this batch is all rejections, either. It might INCLUDE rejections, though.

It could also mean I was waitlisted.

yeah im worried about this, too. i called up and the lady looked me up on the computer and said she couldnt tell me my status. if i were her id have said "i cant tell you your status but why dont you do a little celebration dance just in case, wink wink." if i got some good news that is, if it were bad news i imagine i would have said "i cant tell you your status" so who knows. friday will reveal all i hope

all in all i have to say this ucla speculation is even more nerve inducing and speculative than the northwestern thread the other week, if that is even possible.

ive realized i have this pavlovian responce to long john's avatar, jsut the sight of that screaming tennis dude gets my heart rate up, and all this "maybe she didnt tell me because it was bad news, cuz i would have told me if it were good news" talk is making my eyes bleed but i cant stop checking this damn site and adding my two cents oh deep breathing, count back from ten.....

Hey guys,

Letter sent March 7th. Came in the mail today and my mom faxed it to me at work.

I got rejected, not even waitlisted. It hurts. My interview wasn't great but I didn't expect this. Good luck to everyone else! I love UCLA and always will, but I guess its time to start a new UC chapter in my life. San Diego here I come!

the woman on the phone was right, there will be some rejections in this batch.
As far as speculation into how this new info can provide us with clues about you others waiting let me offer my new theory
If you interviewed way back, before december then this letter might be a rejection or waitlist. you've already gone through at least two adcom meetings and they've had a chance to send your file to the executive committe after your subcommittee has viewed it.
If you interviewed recently (like after Jan 1st) and are hearing now, then probably its an acceptance. You went before one adcom meeting, your app was dynamite and they accepted you straight.
If you interviewed way back and still have not heard then......your file is in a hold/pending review state where you are being compared to other similar applicants. most likely this group will get waitlisted.
my 2 cents.
what do you guys think?

My case validates your theory. I interviewed waaaaaaaaaay back in early October. Long John maybe you should join the FBI instead.
