UCLA letters sent out--Check Status Page

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
letter sent 3/18, arrived here in norcal today.

unranked waiting list...as i expected.

what's the difference between the unranked waiting list and the unranked hold list? is the unranked hold list = the ranked waiting list that ive heard about? the unranked waiting list is the "good" one to be on, right?

and yeah, it'd be nice to know how many people get the unranked wl and how many get in from it...i can't confirm this, but i think ive read somewhere (probably on SDN) that sometimes up to 1/2 the class comes from the unranked wl...could be wrong though

1/2 THE CLASS!!! 😀😀😀😀 A lot of room for optimism :luck::luck::luck::luck:

1/2... are you sure? thats more like uci....not too sure half of the people who get accepted would rather go elsewhere. But i hope you're right.

So Im pretty sure I have an unranked wait list coming my way... I FedExed the key to my roommate buy he hasn't checked it yet. If at all possible, can someone upload the wait list letter on to SDN. Then I'll know what my letter says if/when my roommate confirms my suspicions. Thx so much!!

no, as i expressly stated in that post, i am not sure about this. it's just something that i think i remember reading/hearing somewhere. i could very well be way off.

anyone else without a status change yet?? ANYONE?

bah, i must be in the rejection batch that has yet to go out, i just want it to come already so i can't stop thinking about UCLA.

I don't have a status change but I didn't interview until 3/7. Anyone interview before Feb. and still not have a status change?

I'm still confused as to why the delay in receiving the letters. Does a 3/18 status change mean a decision was made on that day but a letter was not necessarily printed out? or it was printed out but not necessarily mailed...... aaaaah😕

I interviewed in Nov and still no status change.

letters sent 3/18 were all unranked waitlists, unless you applied MSTP.

I interviewed on feb 22nd and still no status change....maybe next week?!

..added another unranked wl.

**3/18 bunch summary**
acceptance: 1 (mstp)
unranked wl: 20
unranked hold: 2
rejection: 0

has ucla already released all of its admissions decisions (rejections, waitlists, acceptances?) im confused about that since i have my interview scheduled for early april? does that mean i have like no chance then and will automatically get waitlisted or rejected? crap. cuz ucla must have already extended all of its offers by now. what do u guys think?

I don't think any institution interviews for a position that they cannot offer - unless they specifically state you are interviewing for a wait list - that would be disingenuous.

I could be wrong

Just checked status page, letter sent 3/18. REALLY wish I wouldn't have checked cause now I want to go hunt down my mail man

Chalk one up to the rejection column from the 3/18 letters. Before I get asked... Interviewed early December, sent LOI about 2 weeks ago (guess that didn't go over too well???).

I am a little surprised despite my "low" MCAT and being out of state, though I lived in LA for a summer, which I made very known in my application.

This was my 7th interview or whatever and by that point I thought I was really good at it, but I guess you just don't know. I figured if I got the interview in the 1st place, they'd look past my MCAT and consider me based on the interview and my essays which had to have been good in the 1st place to even get some of the interviews I have.

Hmm...I think my work printer just said 'PC Load Letter'
+pissed+

jk, at least I have closure and can stop dreaming about life in Westwood, South Beach isn't too terrible of an alternative for now 😎

Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear.

**3/18 bunch summary**
acceptance: 1 (mstp)
unranked wl: 22
unranked hold: 2
rejection: 1

wish me luck guys. im headed home to check my mailbox...

For those of us who interviewed after the 3/18 batch, anyone know how long it takes for decisions to be made?

We have no idea! 🙁 There are some who interviewed in November and are still waiting, and some ppl who heard in a week. I think it just depends on how much they want you; if they aren't sure, they just hold onto your app.

fyi

Called the admissions office and they informed me that they typically accept ~25% off the waitlist after May 15th.

Are you allowed to send in extra LOR after your interview?

Yeah, I think so, just tell them it's coming. My interviewer actually asked me to send her a letter from my PI (I started in his lab after I submitted my app). I think if you tell them it's coming, they will wait to review you until it gets there. But either way, it couldn't hurt right?

So there are about 25 unranked waitlists posted here. Assuming that say only 10-20% of applicants actually post on SDN, that means UCLA has given out a ton of these waitlist spots. I like the Harvard way where there are only 50 waitlist spots so you at least have a fair shot. This just seems cruel giving out so many?

I was reading up on last years thread, and they made mention of 100 spots on the unranked wl.

If I remember correctly from when I was on the hold list 2 years ago, there are 100 spots total for the waitlist and hold list (50 on each). While a good number tend to come off of the waitlist, very few, if any, come off of the hold list. Basically they have to exhaust the waitlist before going to the hold list. Still crossing my fingers that I don't end up there again this year (interviewed in early December, still waiting to hear)! Luck to everyone else still waiting :luck:

If schools have to fill up their class by March 31......does that mean UCLA's class is filled already? for those waiting, do we still have a shot at getting an acceptance?

Granted I have no facts to base this on....but it seems unlikely that 50% of applicants who received the unranked waitlist also read SDN and also post on SDN. With 25 up already, its doubtful there are only 50 of these...the math indicates larger.

Take for example the Harvard HST waitlist thread. Harvard officially says that there are about 25 waitlist spots. Now go look at the thread and count how many applicants posted their waitlist....its about 3 or 4...less than 20%.

Apply that same math here....?

Schools don't have to fill their class by March 31st. They just need to give away as many acceptances as there are people in their class. Since UCLA's yield is around 50% (according to US News), they will ultimately have to give away twice as many acceptances.

So, hypothetically, if UCLA Geffen's class were 120 people big, they need to send 120 acceptances by the end of March. However, ultimately, they'll probably need to send 200 or more acceptances to fill their class.

There's no way the unranked list can be 50 people big. I think I read in last year's thread that it was around 200 people big (which would make more sense). Even at 200 people, it would be a relatively small waitlist and would give you a good shot at an acceptance.

I agree, it seems like it should be bigger based on what we're seeing on SDN this year and what was on last year's thread. Like I said before, when I applied the first time 2 years ago, I remember being told (I can't remember if it was from my premed advisor or the UCLA admissions office directly) that there were 50 spots on each list and I thought that was a tiny list, but went with it and waited. Just my two cents.

🙁 another unranked WL. I'm gonna keep hope alive though for a chance at sunny California😀

does that imply that ucla is gonna stop making acceptances after march 31 (straight acceptances without a waitlist?) that sucks because im interviewing there after march 31. it seems unfair for me to fly all the way out to cali when my only chance is WL.

I don't see how you came up with this conclusion from what I said.

actually, if u read through it again, u might then realize that my concern is pretty valid. assuming a class size of 120, u said ucla could give out at least 120 acceptances by the end of march. if a school has made almost all of its admissions decisions before an applicant has even interviewed, then obviously there is a reason for concern. regardless of that possibility, however, im just gonna interview there, be optimistic, and see what comes out of it. i already have some pretty awesome acceptances anyways, but i really like ucla, so hopefully things will go well.

Even if UCLA gave out 121 acceptances before you interview, its ok. Not everyone they pick picks them in the end. They need to offer probably around 250 spots to fill a class of 120. Bottom line, you are clear. Do well and get in!

I just said UCLA needs to make 240 admissions offers to fill its class of 120 people and that they are only required to make 120 admissions offers by the end of March. I still don't understand how that means they will have to make "almost all" of its admissions decisions before your interview.

haha. yeah i didn't see how they came up with that either.

on a similar, yet different note: since we have to drop all of the acceptances we're holding except one by May 15th, does this mean UCLA has to accept all of its students by then? My interviewer said UCLA routinely waits until the 'last gasp' to offer acceptances. Kinda worried this means after the May deadline. Anyone know anything about this?

It has to make all of its non-waitlist acceptances by then. Not March 31st. May 15th. I think UCLA will probably make around 180 acceptance offers pre-waitlist and probably 40-60 off the waitlist.

oh, i was saying that ucla was making a lot of admissions decisions by the end of march, i understand that they can make more in april. and obviously timing is always an important issue in schools with rolling admissions. that's all i was saying that i was concerned about interviewing so late.

anyways, thanks for the good wishes monkey house!

who's the dean of admissions for geffen? i can't find this anywhere on their web site.

do you guys know if we have to send in copies of transcripts before they make a decision?

the admissions office should have requested copies of your transcripts before you went for the interview. You dont have to send anything unless you have updated copies from your current school.

UGH. Status Change 3/18, interview 12/04, and I still don't have the letter in my mailbox. I called admissions today because it has definitiely been over 5 business days (the website says "please wait 5 business days for reciept of any written notification") and they said to wait until early next week! I live in CA right now and it should not take two weeks for me to get mail!! So nerve racking...
Isn't the waitlist time sensitive? I thought you had to reply within two weeks of when it was mailed, which would be early next week. So does that mean I'm probably rejected?? : (

waitlist just says to reply at "your earliest convenience"
