have you guys started with the financial aid stuff?

apparently there were some very eager and overachieving students who started mailing all the financial forms too early so they shut down the website.

it's back on. just wanted to see where everybody else is. i made changes to my fafsa having officially filed my taxed and now i'm filling out the ucla forms. i'm only going for the Stafford loans so it makes it a lot easier since I don't have to include my parents tax info. are you guys applying for all the loans?

I am just getting going with all that. I am doing undergrad at a cheap state school, so this financial aid stuff is very foriegn to me... imma do my best!

I am applying for all possible money- so that means including the parents info. I really hope that doesn't come to bite me in the rear with UCLA giving me a high estimated family contribution, when my family isn't giving me two nickles.

Also, how bout that comeback last night... UCLA in final four. Watch.

the student access form is such a pain in the ass. fafsa was easy to fill out, but how are you supposed to estimate you're 2006 income? and does anyone know the average amount people get from all university aid from ucla?

what is the student access form?

i followed the link on the Financial Aid postcard I got and found these forms that need to be filled out:

Financial Aid Agreement
This form serves to declare the types of aid for which the student is applying. It also explains what information needs to be submitted for such applications.

Income Tax Certification This form has two parts – one for the applicant and one for the parents. Parent information only needs to be provided if the applicant is applying for All University Aid. Please note, in this case, a parent’s signature is required.

Parent's Household Verification Form This form must be completed if the applicant and/or applicant’s parent specified that they did not file taxes.

Student’s Statement of Expenses and Resources This form must be completed by all applicants. It requires the applicant to list all expenses and resources from the prior calendar year.

Parents' Statement of Expenses and Resources (only required if you are applying for “All University Aid”) This form is required to be completed by the parents of any applicant who is applying for “All University Aid.” It requires the parents to list all expenses and resources from the prior calendar year.

am i missing something? there is a form that asks for how much you spent in 2005 on rent, utilities, food, car, etc.

thanks.

howui, you need to complete the need access form which asks a lot of specific questions in order to be considered for all university aid, along with those other forms that you need to print and fill out. Does anyone know the due date for all of this?

COOL... thanks DAt_student and KAP!

I'm only applying for the Stafford loans so I'm not doing the need access part or the parents info on the fafsa and on tax returns.

that's why i was all confused about the planned income for next year, they don't ask that in any my forms for just goverment loans.

thanks for the quick reply though.

good luck with getting the money!

thanks, i need lots of money... i'm broke!

DAMN, those scores are tough right there. Congrats.

Congrats for the interview invitation. I wish you the best of luck. I hope to see you in the Fall. 🙂 Interview tips: be yourself and relax. The more at ease you are, the better your chances. The invitation itself means that UCLA believes you're a strong applicant. So, you shouldn't worry so much. Again, I wish you the best of luck & I hope to see you in September.

also check out the interview feed back for UCLA on SDN, you can get an idea of the types of questions they ask.

the most frequent question is: Why UCLA? so be ready to talk about it.

don't forget there is also an essay in the morning so don't be late. it's not bad at all, deals with a general dental topic. no stress.

good luck!

I asked my dentist for some old JADA and CDA journals to read. The articles really helped with the essay portion of the interview. You'll most likely have two interviews - one from a faculty and one from a student. Like dat_student said, just relax and be yourself. Good luck and I hope to meet you in the fall.

Screw ALL of these financial aid forms... I don't know any other school that has to do all of this. I'm prolly gonna fill out all these forms, spend hours, and get NO MONEY!

Ok... I feel better now, back to the forms 🙂

Ok, question for everyone... What are your career aspirations? I think all doors are open at ucla. General Dentistry? Specialty? PHD?

I'm interested most in ortho and pedo. But by no means have a ruled out any other path.

OK, your turn...

i am looking at OMFS, though i realize i gotta study my ass off and plan for a very long ride (4-6 years on top of the 4 at ucla). but the surgery part is really appealing for me and implants are the way of the future.

that said, i still have a lot to learn and see.

"There are several available forms of financial assistance: loans, scholarships, grants and work-study. Approximately 90% of our financial aid is in the form of loans. These loans must be repaid with interest via a payment plan which usually does not commence until six months following graduation or separation/withdrawal. The remaining 10% of financial assistance is in the form of grants, scholarships and funds received for work-study none of which needs to be repaid."

I'd like to make that decision after my 1st or 2nd quarter. 🙂 Looks like we have many gunners in our class 🙂

Do you guys know if it would be possible for me to not have a car (at least for the first two years of dental school)? I know that we probably would have to go to the Venice Center to do rotations but that's not until the third year right? Parking is such an issue and if I can take the Big Blue Bus or the UCLA shuttle, I can save money on the car, insurance, gas, and avoid having to drive in crazy traffic...I'll miss having a car though 😕

it all depends where you live. if you can score a place at Wayburn, right across the street from the school, then you probably will not need a car. Plus we will be in class, lab, library A LOT! and on the weekends your friends can drive you around.

if you live at some of the other family grad housing, they have a shuttle that goes to and from ucla. again probably can survive without a car. But LA is not like Boston or NY, it's not a public transport friendly city, it's a car friendly city.

there is a Big Blue Bus that goes right from UCLA to the Venice Clinic on Lincoln, so you can survive without a car, but you will probably have to do some adjustments.

thanks howui3! You're always very helpful! I hope to meet you in Sept. 🙂

is it tough to get a place at weyburn?

Hi everyone,
I have decided to go to UCLA this Fall and have just started trying to figure out my housing options and financial aid stuff...anyways, does anyone know how to indicate our order of preference between the different university apartments like between weyburn vs Keystone or the other apts on our housing applications...also, it seems like weyburn is popular option for grads...If I couldn't get in there, where else do you all think is a good place to check out....See you all in the fall

Congrats!!! and welcome to the ucla thread.

i noted the preference between the different ucla appartments on the application itself. I think there was an area for special insructions or for special needs, something like that, it had a text box, so I wrote down my preferences there. I called the housing office to make sure that I can do this and they were ok with it.

hey thanks howui3 for the quick reply, See you in the Fall!

I'm glad that you've decided to go to UCLA. See you in the fall.

Is it just me... or did the cost of attendance go from 176k to about 215.5k in one year...?

Cuz that is a big freaking jump.

Ok, back to the need access form 😡

so much for states schools being cheap, huh..

215K is a lot. :scared: but it's still much better than the cost of attendance for UPENN = UCLA + $82,388. ~$86K of that 215K is for living expenses (off-campus students: room/board, personal, transportation). If you add interest to 215K the number becomes scarier. :scared:

At My income now which is about 4k per year, I probably could have that paid off before my 100th birthday.

I really hope this investment in my education will pay dividends at some point... but i doubt anyone would go to dental school if it didn't...

Don't worry. UCLA has a great reputation and is located in a great area. Hopefully, we can quickly recover:

Greater Los Angeles: The six-county Greater Los Angeles Metropolitan Region (including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and, Imperial counties) will, it is projected, account for almost half of California's 1997-2020 population growth. Altogether, the Greater Los Angeles region is projected to grow from 16.1 million persons in 1997, to 19.2 million persons in 2010, to 21.8 million persons in 2020—a 23-year increase of more than five-and-a-half million!

Among individual counties, Los Angles County alone is projected to add two million more residents by 2020. Further to the east, Riverside and San Bernardino counties will likely add 570,000 new residents between 1997 and 2010, and 1.1 million new residents by 2020. Orange County, which by some measures is already nearly built-out, is projected to add 458,000 new residents by 2010 and 726,000 by 2020.

If present trends continue, California's population will likely reach ... 40 million by 2010.

P.S. These numbers and percentages are projections, not facts, and projections are frequently updated. The 1998 Department of Finance (DOF) population projections, for example, are significantly lower than those issued in 1993.

KAP said:

I don't think there is a set due date, but I think it'd be in our best interests to fill out the forms as quickly as possible. Think about this though, many people don't have their tax info back- some people probably haven't even filed yet.

Some of our future classmates have not even been accepted yet or have not yet made their final decision to attend ucla.

But here is what Frank Doucette (the financial aid guy wrote me in late feb:

"You may hear an early March deadline for FAFSA.
This is only a state recommended deadline. There is no penalty for waiting
and missing the deadline. You would only need to complete the FAFSA by that
time if you are applying for a scholarship from an outside agency that
requires FAFSA data. If you do the FAFSA early, you will need to go back
into the application, once 2005 taxes have been completed, to make sure that all data is correct."

Hope that helps.

UCLA offers a CE course that, upon completion, allows general dentists to place implants. The course is one Saturday a month for 8 months. I too have an interest in implant placement, but I'm not really keen on any of the OMS or perio residency programs. It's just something for you to think about if implant placement is one of your main motivations for wanting to go into OMS. You could save yourself 4-6 years of extra schooling by taking an eight day course.

Congratulations to everyone who's starting next fall. Good luck to all of you.

FINISHED ALL MY FINANCIAL AID FORMS! 😛

But seriously, How bout these bruins in the final four? They are KILLIN with that defense. Who's down to get a C/O 2010 IM BBall team next year? (gotta get some excercise don't we?)

I'll be down for b-ball if u join some football team with me haha.

I think it'll be a lot of fun for most of the students to get together, say on a Sat. morning, just to have a fun game of football. Plus by Sept. football season will be starting up again!

after watching the winter olympics, I want to start a curling team.

it's the perfect sport for the unathletic white poeple (like me)

do you guys know when school actually starts for us?
Mid/late sept?
