I think that is it. You may not be able to connect your laptop to their network if you don't have XP pro. It depends on how their network is set up. I am guessing... I can't think of any other reasons.

Hey there Class of '10!!!🙂
My name is Lauren and I am in the class of '09 here at UCLA!!
We just started our 2nd year of classes (YES, we have school over the entire summer, so be grateful you dont start till September!!)...I am bummed because I didn't get a Lil Sib (it was actually my fault cause I couldnt make it to the meeting where we got to pick you all!)...but I just wanted to say hello to you all, and that you all should be LIVING UP your free summer! Yes, UCLA is frikin tough school, and YES, you will study more this year than you ever have in your entire life! But, on the other hand, you will still have time for your outside life (family, wives/husbands, friends, bars, sports, etc!!). So please don't think you are about to enter the end of your life! Cause you arent...!

Can't wait to meet you all! The best advice I have for right now is to relax, get your things organized (teeth collecting, Financial Aid forms (aren't those past due?? Haha!), get a PLANNER!, find a place to live (ahhaah that might be an important priority)), and just have some fun!

Best of luck and see you all at Orientation! Don't worry...there won't be any hazing!!🙂 hahahah!

Pro features that aren't in Home Edition
The following features are not present in Windows XP Home Edition.
Power user
Remote Desktop - All versions of Windows XP--including Home Edition--support Remote Assistance, which is an assisted support technology that allows a help desk or system administrator to remotely connect to a client desktop for troubleshooting purposes. But Only Pro supports the new Remote Desktop feature, which is a single-session version of Terminal Services with two obvious uses: Mobile professionals who need to remotely access their corporate desktop, and remote administration of clients on a network. You can access a Windows XP Remote Desktop from any OS that supports a Terminal Services client (such as Windows 98 and, interestingly XP Home). XP Home can act as the client in a Remote Desktop session; only Pro can be the server.
Multi-processor support - Windows XP Pro supports up to two microprocessors, while Home Edition supports only one.
Automated System Recovery (ASR) - In a somewhat controversial move, Microsoft has removed the Backup utility from the default Windows XP Home Edition, though it is available as an optional installation if you can find it on the CD-ROM (hint: it's in the /valueadd folder). The reason for this the integration of Microsoft's new Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool into Backup. In Pro, ASR will help recover a system from a catastrophic error, such as one that renders the system unbootable. ASR-enabled backups are triggerable from XP Setup, allowing you to return your system to its previous state, even if the hard drive dies and has to be replaced. Unlike consumer-oriented features such as System Restore, ASR is not automatic: It must manually be enabled from within the Backup utility in Windows XP Pro. In any event, while there is a Backup utility available for Home Edition, you cannot use ASR, even though mentions of this feature still exist in the UI. Confusing? Yes. But it's better than no Backup at all, which was the original plan.
Dynamic Disk Support - Windows XP Professional (like its Windows 2000 equivalent) supports dynamic disks, but Home Edition does not (instead, HE supports only the standard Simple Disk type). Dynamic disks are not usable with any OS other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro, and they cannot be used on portable computers. Likewise, Home Edition does not include the Logical Disk Manager.
Fax - Home Edition has no integrated fax functionality out of the box, though it is an option you can install from the XP Home CD.
Internet Information Services/Personal Web Server - Home Edition does not include the IIS Web server 5.1 software found in Pro.
Security
Encrypting File System - Windows XP Professional supports the Encrypting File System (EFS), which allows you encrypt individual files or folders for local security (EFS is not enabled over a network). EFS-protected files and folders allows users to protect sensitive documents from other users.
File-level access control - Any user with Administrator privileges can limit access to certain network resources, such as servers, directories, and files, using access control lists. Only Windows XP Professional supports file-level access control, mostly because this feature is typically implemented through Group Policy Objects, which are also not available in Home Edition.
"C2" certification - Microsoft will attempt to have Windows XP Professional certified with the "C2" security designation, a largely irrelevant status, but one which will not be afforded to Home Edition.
Management
Domain membership - Home Edition cannot be used to logon to an Active Directory domain. For obvious reasons, the Domain Wizard is also missing in Home Edition.
Group Policy - Since Home Edition cannot be used to logon to an Active Directory domain, Group Policy--whereby applications, network resources, and operating systems are administered for domain users--is not supported either.
IntelliMirror - Microsoft lumps a wide range of semi-related change and configuration management technologies under the IntelliMirror umbrella, and none of these features are supported in the consumer oriented Home Edition. IntelliMirror capabilities include user data management; centrally-managed software installation, repair, updating, and removal; user settings management; and Remote Installation Services (RIS), which allows administrators to remotely install the OS on client systems.
Roaming profiles - This feature allows users to logon to any computer in an Active Directory network and automatically receive their customized settings. It is not available in Home Edition, which cannot logon to an Active Directory domain.
Corporate deployment
Multi-language support - Only Windows XP Professional will ship in a Multi-Language version or support multiple languages in a single install.
Sysprep support - Windows XP Pro will support the System Preparation (Sysprep) utility, while Home Edition will not.
RIS support - See the IntelliMirror heading in the previous section; Home Edition does not support RIS deployments.
64-bit Edition
Microsoft is shipping a 64-bit version of Windows XP for Intel Itanium systems that mirrors the Professional Edition feature-set.

Networking features
The following networking features are not included in Home Edition:
The user interface for IPSecurity (IPSec)
SNMP
Simple TCP/IP services
SAP Agent
Client Service for NetWare
Network Monitor
Multiple Roaming feature
User interface features
Windows XP Home Edition has some different default settings that affect the user interface. For example, Guest logon is on by default in Home, but off in Pro. The Address bar in Explorer windows is on in Pro by default, but off in Home. During the beta period, Microsoft had intended to use a business-oriented shell theme ("Professional") by default in Pro and the "Luna" consumer theme in Home Edition. But feedback from corporate users suggested that everyone liked the consumer-oriented Luna theme better, and development of the Professional theme was cancelled. Other user interface features that are present in Pro but not Home include:
Client-side caching
Administrative Tools option on the Start menu (a subset of the Admin tools are still present in Home, however).

dat_student,

i've been noticing the kinds of things you say on the thread. i just gotta say, you are such a character.

You are always thinking about school! This is the last summer you'll have, yet, you happily devote much of your time thinking about UCLA. Wether its housing, financial aid, computer specs, student class, it just seems like you try so hard to get to know about every aspect of the school. You are definitely..MOST DEFINITELY what we call an overachiever.

Anyway, thanx for all the info you shared. Keep up the good work.

Agreed! Good job! 👍

By the way my guess regarding the XP Pro issue is the encryption features contained in XP Professional versus Home. After all, we may have sensitive documents (e.g. patient records) in our laptops that must be secured abiding by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPAA privacy laws.

Just a guess...

i live in Santa Monica and have been going to the beach pretty regularly, and the water is not at all cold - no need for a wetsuit.

in fact it's been HOT for the past few weeks, so it feels nice going to the beach and getting in the water.

Hello! Did you sign up for parking? Are you not living at Weyburn? Luckily, the housing is just a short walk away from the school, and I plan on just walking to school every morning. Sure beats that huge pricetag on the parking permit!

Hi guys, long time no see...hope you guys are having a great summer!

I just got back from Vegas and man was it hot (113 degrees)...but i had a blast!

I was just wondering if you guys knew if the Weyburn two bedrrom apartments have carpet in the bedrooms. I want to start preparing to move in and this would help.

Thanx so much!

So I've been deadset on buying a thinkpad and not another dell, so I decided to call and see if these specs are really requirements or just recommendations.

I talked to Mary Tawfall, one of the tech advisors, and she told me that all that is really required is a fast enough processor, decent amount RAM, and large enough hard drive space (for saving a lot of images). She even said that most new laptops off the shelf should be fine. They also would like a 4 year warranty, but I think even that is up to us.

I asked specifically about the expansion slots and she said not to worry about those. But she did say that XP Professional is required and that if you come loaded with the home edition they will make you upgrade it.

Hopefully this helps out some of you who are still shopping around.

If you guys still have questions for her, her number is 310-206-3591.

The more I think about it the more I don't want to install XP Pro. 😡 I'll have to call her tomorrow.

It uses too much RAM. Plus, all my recovery CDs restore my computer back to XP Home Ed.

Hi there. I toured a 2 bedroom (which I will have come Fall), and yes the bedrooms and the common area is carpeted. It's not the plush and soft type of carpet though...it's more like the hard carpet you'd find in a college dorm. Hope this helps!

I contacted a perio doc about collecting some teeth, and he told me that it's OSHA regulation for them to autoclave the teeth. The labels we are suppose to put out say "do not autoclave". I was wondering if anyone knows if it matters if the dentist goes ahead and autoclaves the teeth. It's just to make sure it's sterile right?

formalin is what's supposed to sterilize the teeth. so i wouldnt let them do it unless ucla says otherwise.

Here's a repost:

Oh by the way, I have bunch of these teeth collecting jars, if anyone want to buy them. Also, I have a bottle of fresh formaldehyde, and a bottle of, ugh hum, used formaldehyde (do you need a preservative to preserve a preservative?). If you need them, I can let them go for 1/2 of the original price, whatever that price may be. The only down side is you have to pick them up from me at UCLA. I'm not going to mail these items and then pay for shipping. Wouldn't be worthwhile by then. Send me a private message for a response.

JK5177 is a super awesome person. If you need "formaldehyde" you should definitely get it from him.

JK5177, I'll be in LA on Aug 11th. I'll purchase your formaldehyde if not sold by then . 🙂

Not that your question is geared toward DS2's, but I'll be at Weyburn on Aug 1st, July 31st, today, tomorrow, day after tomorrow, and whatever. Maybe I should start enjoying my summer. Boo-hoo.

You know what, gather those teeth anyway, even if they are autoclaved, and keep them in a jar that says they are autoclaved. The thing with those teeth collection is that you don't know what you will be doing with them. In restorative dentistry, we started mounting them toward the spring quarter I believe, and all we did was drill on them. I heard later in endo, we will use them to practice root canals. Someone the other day posted to buy maxillary incisors for $50. My point is that you don't know when they will come in handy, the best way to prepare is to collect a boatload of them at whatever condition they are in, and then if you can't use them for an important procedure, you can still use them for a less-important procedure. Collect them all!

hI!!! Yes, i did sign up for parking...gotta, since i'm commuting ... from HoMe! ...which means i won't live at weyburn. (i saw the place...it's so close to D-school!!! I'm sure you'll enjoy the walk to school while i sit in L.A. traffic. 🙁 hehe.

...but then again, i'll sure be saving some money staying home, so that'll compensate for the parking permit's hUge pricetage. 😉
