I am in state at Uconn and want to specialize but am torn to living in ny at Columbia. Similar specialization rates. Any advice.

Stick with the cheap school, no reason to spend any extra money, especially if they have similar "specialization rates" anyway.

Go to UConn. I have it on good authority from Columbia that they consider UConn their academic equal when it comes to dental school. You're only 90 miles away from NY. Go visit when you need your fill of the big city. Plus, you can always do your specialty in the Big Apple. Save your money in case you need it down the road.

So..what about UMDNJ and Columbia? I have residency in New Jersey, so I'll get in-state tuition. I was wondering if choosing UMDNJ is reasonable even if I intend to specialize after graduation. Thanks.

personally i would take columbia since they dont have letter grades! this means less competition among the students and a more environmental friendly atmosphere. my uncle told me when he was in dental school one of his classmates lab works got sabotaged. not funny for that poor fellow.

Yes it's reasonable to attend your state school. It's the student that specializes, not the school. If you can work hard and motivate yourself you'll be able to specialize from anywhere.

Holy cow! Are you serious??? that's too harsh. It ain't cool...hm....so not having letter grades gives edge to columbia?

Yeah, Armoshell, I totally understand your principle of specializing thing. I cannot agree with you more. I just wanted second opinions. I'm pretty sure I''ll go UMDNJ. Thanks for you input, guys. I hope no one sabotages me at school, 😀. (Sorry op, if I used ur thread)

I did get my mannequin head filled with alginate once, but to be fair I thought it was hilarious

I believe that UConn is also pass/fail - so it has a "we're all in this together" feel.

The funny thing is, every dental school claims to have a "friendly, non-competitive" atmosphere, and I believe them. It's a myth that there are schools where the whole class is cutting each others throats and stepping over each other to get the #1 rank.

UConn has the same specialization rate as Columbia? I didn't know that...

I didn't like the way that Columbia came across. They behaved very arrogantly towards me and made me feel as if I didn't belong and I was so privileged for them to so much as acknowledge me. I'd DEFINITELY go with Uconn!

They both have specialization rates around 40 to 50 percent not counting gprs otherwise they put themselves at 90%

Columbia publishes statistics for where their class goes. The last year data was published 40% of their class went on to specialties, ~60% of which were competitive specialties. The year before that 30% went on to specialize, ~30% of which were competitive specialties.

Clearly, this means that Columbia was not as good a school for specializing in 2004 as it was in 2005.

Additionally, besides the specializers almost everyone goes into a GPR or AEGD. This is unsurprising considering a good portion of the graduates probably plan to stay in NY, where a residency is required.

lol your avatar is hilarious. I always take specialization rates with a grain of salt. Perhaps students found general practice very appealing or something. I agree with armorshell completely that it is the student who does the specialty, not the school.

I agree with the above from Ozzie... When I interviewed at Columbia, they asked me "which schools they were competing against to get me on their roster." I told them UCONN....and the interviewer said "wow..yeah a really good school..we are trying to copy alot of what they do in the curriculum"

I know this is a lil late, but just want to say something for future UCONN vs. Columbia pre-dents.
