Hello everyone. I am new here on SDN. Actually i've been just an observer for the past couple of months, but decided to make an account today.

I've recently been accepted to NYU, Stonybrook and Uconn, but i've narrowed it down to just Stonybrook and Uconn. I am an Instate student for Stonybrook, and OOS for Uconn, but I can qualify for instate tuition 2nd year. Uconn also offered me a full scholarship. When visiting several schools for interviews, Stonybrook always stood out to me. I love their small class size, students get to see patients starting their second year, classes are taken with med students, 4th years have their own chairs and assistants, and it would allow me to stay in New york. I also did like Uconn, but the "extremely demanding" curriculum, and several posts that I read on here kind of freaked me out a bit. On the other hand, that same "extremely demanding" would probably be great for boards and a major plus for me if i decided to specialize. Both of these programs are very similar.... but I simply cannot decide. Uconn's Scholarship does have some conditions/requirements that I would have to complete by after graduation or residency.

So with all that in mind, I would love to hear your feedback. And please don't say one school because they are offering me a scholarship. Thank you in advance

Stony Brook and Uconn are very similar, both have a small program of 40 or so students and both of them take classes with med students (to some degree.) Location and price is relatively identical (suburbs with a 250K or so price tag) The only thing i've heard about Stony is that they have issues with patients (not major issues, but issues nonetheless) since the area isnt really poor and most people have insurance. So they prefer to go to a regular dentist instead of a clinic. Additionally, expect the UConn scholarship to go away if you cant maintain a certain GPA. If that GPA is a 3.5 or more, then I wouldnt bet on keeping it because its extremely difficult to maintain that high of a GPA (not impossible, but not likely either.)

I would go with the one you liked the most, both are fine and are pretty much on the same level. If you feel you need to be close to home then Stony is better, otherwise UConn is more up your alley.

Uconn is p/f so it wouldn't be a GPA requirement. I would have to do a residency in CT after grad, or if the residency isn't in CT, i would have to come back to work in a health center in CT for one yr, or I would have to teach at any accredited dental school for 2 yr min. Just one of them is required

What were your stats if you dont mind? Because I want to know what it takes to get a full ride at Uconn. 🙂

any indication of your stats or is that just top secret?

Well, NY also requires 1 year of residency to practice after you grad too.

If I were offered a full ride scholarship to a dental school, that would be my choice, especially if I already liked it. Besides, Bereno is going to UCONN, you can't lose! 😉

I liked Uconn, but I enjoyed Stonybrook more. :/ I'm torn

Well it really depends on what matters more to you:

A school you liked more or a totally free education? If you think about the fact that both schools will give you the same education, but one school will cost you $0.00 I dont quite see how you can turn that down. That money can be easily invested in a future practice, a house, a wedding, etc.

$250K is nothing to sneeze at, going to UConn will pretty much make you a super rich person after 10 years (because you'll be making at least 100K and collecting nothing but profit.)

LOL I don't know how much I can add to the experience at UConn!

OP: That is a tough call... If it were me, I would come to UConn because you can go to bed easier at night knowing you have no debt. Think of it this way - if the programs are roughtly equivalent, but one of them is free, why not go to the free one? Either decision will let you become a great dentist! 👍

I would personally go to Stony Brook. However, in your case, take the full scholarship. Nothing can supersede a free education.

I decided to go with Uconn! Thanks Guys!

@Bereno, Guess I'll be seeing you in August!

Nice! I'm really excited to meet you! Enjoy your summer 🙂

i think the p/f makes students more friendly although SBU is a gr8 program. Best of luck

I'm hoping that is the case. The students all seemed pretty chill. There were definitely people shooting for specialties, but the did not seem like "gunners" in the traditional sense. That's the vibe I got at least. 👍
