Hi I was wondering for those who have gotten into UCSD if their letter made any mention as being accepted in-state or out-of-state.

I am claiming Cali residency, but the claim is either way depending on how you interpret the guidelines.

I will call them to ask but I'm sort of afraid the fact it wasn't in there as is the case most places means that my in-state residency claim raised some red flags.

When I was applied to UCSD I applied as a "resident" but legally speaking my status was somewhat ambiguous. For admissions purposes as long as you can make a case for your residency (and don't claim to be a resident of another state when applying to other schools) I don't think that's a problem.

For tuition purposes UCSD determines your residency status independently of what you put on your application. In fact, this determination is not made until the summer right before classes start.

It was frustrating not to know if I would be paying in-state or out-of-state tuition until I was committed to the school. The lady who makes that determination was completely unhelpful. The guidelines are available online, however, and making the case for in-state tuition is not hard if you know in advance what they're looking for. If you don't have a magazine subscription to a CA address, a CA driver's license, or proof of business dealings with CA merchants (eg. supermarket cards) now is the time to accumulate that crap.

Thanks that was exactly the information I was looking for. I'm going to have to call and ask them to decide earlier than that. I don't know how they can do that considering that many decisions on where to go to school will be financially based. And in the summer, you are completely locked in to the school since you will have turned down your other offers.

The issue is that residency for tuition is decided by the UCSD registrar, who is out of the SOM's realm of control.

There's really nothing that can be done about it. But good luck.

Also, many out-of-state residents get scholarships that cover the excess tuition. Be sure to ask about those if you have doubts about getting in-state classification your first year.
