thanks! Those numbers are way too high for me 🙁
Wow, that's an awesome link!

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about numbers. My GPA is WAY WAY below that but I'm still applying. I'm hoping I have other qualities to offer *fingers crossed*. Good luck!

dont be intimidated, they're just numbers.

can anybody explain to me why the orientation week pictures from last year are all shirt & tie?

i know....why are they so dressed up?!

anybody know what the parking situation is like at the med school? i heard it's pretty pricey to get a permet for the parking lot close to our classes. also, is there a lot of traffic when classes start and end? are there usually spots open?
i'm planning to live in mira mesa... that's why i want to know how much more inconvenient transportation would be than living closer to campus.
thanks 🙂

undergrad S spots are a little over 40/month i believe, but if you come late or want to leave mid-day, you will have a really hard time finding a parking spot when you get back.

B spots are for grad and staff. they are about 70....VERY PRICEY...but there are more open and they are also closer. be sure not to park illegally b/c they are extremely studiouslly checking the permits

hey everyone

im going crazy!!! trying to find something i had already viewed a couple weeks ago.....i believe it was when i logged into the portal, there was a place were you could see your schedule, like the professor, the number of classes, and what each entailed. I remember there was this big circle picture in the center and it had what cell biology and biochemistry entailed.....

did anyone else see this? and by any chance where is it? i totally forgot where i found it! hehe

I don't remember seeing any of the detailed info regarding classes and the like. But maybe I have overlooked it, as I'm still new to that portal, having been recently been accepted to UCSD.

By the way, does anyone how long it takes for the acceptance packet to make its way to our mailboxes? It's been at least a week since they mailed it out, and I still haven't received it. Does UCSD use campus mail for this purpose?

And just wanted to say a big HELLO to all my future classmates!! 🙂

i remember this. it was very cool/overwhelming when i read it-very detailed down to lecture topics and i think i saw a few previous years exams. at the time i was reassured that i had studied every single thing listed, but definately not crammed into one quarter of work. they may be updating the faculty list or resources a bit. as a consolation they have given us the biomedical library welcome page-enjoy pubmed & roger. 👍

i can't wait for 08/30/04.

sorry...i don't remember that link. i'm with you dentate...we're goign to have a great time! when are you guys all moving to san diego?

When did you get accepted? Thx

ya i agree, they probably took the information down to update, because i was lookin everywhere to find it again, and for half the time i thought maybe i had dreamed this!

do u guys know if we pick our electives if any during orientation?

so many classes look really exciting and interesting to me

where is everyone else living by the way, i found an apt on regents, near the school.

hi =)

i expect to be moving to SD in mid-august. living at a place a couple miles away from campus and planning on getting a trusty bicycle...

Just a note from a UCSD alum. UCSD has a pretty reliable shuttle system and I made it through 4 years without a car, but....I'm from San Francisco and I've biked all my life and am not afraid of hills, but UCSD and La Jolla have some hills....more of a problem though are the very high traffic roads and freeway ramps with no signals or crosswalks that make biking very difficult and dangerous ( you end up walking your bike more of the time ). There are also not really very many sidewalks to speak of, few street lights at night and need I say, nothing in the way of bike lanes. Biking is not undoable, just not always the best option

Yay! I finally have housing. I managed to find a grad student at La Jolla del Sol looking for a roommate...and come next week, I will have my own room and bathroom for $650. If you haven't found housing yet, I would definitely try looking in the off-campus listings on the housing website...the login that someone posted a while back still works:

Username: temp
PW: temp2k

There are lots of people looking for roommates and it's probably the fastest way to find a place to live...and on the admitted student page, there are also several people looking for roommates in the forums. Good luck guys!

Where is everyone living? I found this house in Del Mar. It's so nice.. like a mansion, but a little pricey. I'm comparing between that house and this townhouse on Genessee St. I'm leaning much more towards the one in Del Mar just cuz it's so much nicer and I get my own bathroom. I'm just a little worried about the traffic to and from school. I am planning to drive. Is it worth it to live far if the place is really nice? Any opinions would be welcome... and also... does anybody know where the majority of the off campus folks live? Thanks.

hey twyc,
wow, that house sounds great! yeah, i'll be new to the area, so i have no idea if you'll get a lot of traffic in the morning. but that is something i considered when finding a place to live. the UCSD forums seem to have a bunch of people looking for roommates, you should check that out. seems like quite a few apts very close to campus. perhaps a native like alex99 could answer yoru question about the del mar area?

ps-i hear UTC is pretty popular for off-campus folks.

I'm moving to San Diego on the 15th and wanted to meet some of my new classmates before the orientation. What do you think?

hey ya

i totally agree!
i move in on the 12th i think.....**** thats soon.....!

Yep, I've lived all over while an undergrad (about 7 years in SD total, currently in Los Angeles). Since I liked to go home between long breaks or just go home earlier (instead of waiting for traffic to die down) I preferred living closer to campus. I know most of my friends who were "commuters" lived in places like Encinitas, Mira Mesa, Chula Vista, etc. THOSE are pretty far. Del Mar isn't that far but it's not nearly as close as UTC. If you also care about people visiting you, then a closer place will bring more people (usually) than a farther place.

i definitely agree! let's have at least a big bash the day before orientation starts. it'll see just the right mood for our week ahead... 🙂

Here's our exam schedule (subject to change but probably won't):

Mon 10/4 - Molecular Bio
Tues 10/12 - Metabolism and Bioenergetics
Mon 10/18 - Cell Bio
Mon 11/1 - Immunology
Tues 11/16 - Biochem & Disease
Wed 11/17 - Social & Behavioral Sciences
Fri 11/19 - Molecular Bio
Mon 11/22 - Cell Bio
Wed 11/24 - Molecules & Medicine
Wed 12/15 - genetics
Fri 12/17 - Pharmacology

It's crazy how our first exam is less than 2 months away. It seems like it's so far in the future.

thanks. i see they weren't kidding about that exam-every-week thing... but at least there's all of september to slack before they start.

i think this forum being dead might mean our future classmates aren't crazy, anal-premeds. good good! yeah, we should all hang out before classes, but i won't be there until late august... yeah, no orientation stuff for me yet. okay, talk to you later!

hoping2004 said:
is the DDR competition still on alex?

Sure. DDR for everyone. The only problem is that my place is on the 2nd floor and it might piss off the people that live below me. I actually did that last night when I had my friends over and we started playing it. My place is pretty damn small too (only 1 bedroom). I say I just bring my system to your place. Don't you live in a 3 bedroom place or something?

I went to the academic affairs office and they hooked me up. Helped me to plan some stuff during the fall quarter.

Geez, you're so prepared. I don't even have a bed or a desk yet. I guess i will need to start booking tickets on southwest for the holidays. I bet all the cheap tickets are already sold out...yep, they are. Poo.

Sorry, I didn't check the postings recently. I've been so busy. I'm moving to SD on August 15 and any time after that would be cool to meet. We don't have to have a huge party, but it would be cool if we could meet in some coffee shop or bar. I also have a 1 brm and it is pretty small but I'm willing to host.
Any ideas how we could get in touch and connect without having everyone see out email addresses?

hey deez. maybe try posting in the student life forum on our UCSD page?

anyway, i forget who was looking for the list of electives, but check out last year's fall schedule of electives! it's so hard to pick among them...they all look interesting 🙂

Hey guys,
What's the difference between the Student Evaluation Form and the Report of a Physical Exam? I thought they were the same things, but now looking at the Health Requirements sheet again, they look different. Should I get my doctor to send a Report of a Physical Exam? What is that include exactly? And how is it different that the Student Evaluation Form (which seemed pretty thorough to me).

hey guys

just wanted to wish you all good luck this year, i was granted a deferral by dr rapaport due to the family circumstances i had......but ill be happy when you guys welcome me next year!

best of luck you guys!!

i hope everything turns out well bjork... best wishes.

and wow, life can sure change quickly and surprisingly. guys, i'm going to have to withdraw from this thread too 🙂 good luck to everyone at UCSD. awesome awesome school!

hey hoping thanks!

what happened, are you also deferring or going to another school?

banana, if you didn't already send them in, as far as i know the student eval sheet is optional and the physical exam report is mandatory. physicals measure all your physical stuff: height, weight, blood pressure, etc. the eval sheet covers medical/family history (if i remember correctly) and other stuff that a doctor would have to ask you to find out rather than just sticking you on a scale or dipping a pH stick into your urine.

orientation schedule is up on the portal now...

and if anyone has any input on housing around san diego, that would be great!

Hi Hoping2004 and all you lucky UCSD SOM Class of 2008 members.

My husband is a grad student at UCSD and I'm applying this summer for the UCSD SOM. We live in the graduate student housing. If you haven't already gotten on the waiting list, you need to. Once your accepted, you can get on the list. La Jolla Del Sol, where I live, is great. Also you can get on a roomate list and that might get you in there sooner.

Here is the link to get on the waiting list for grad/med student housing:

Here is a link to the Off-campus housing page: http://offcampushousing.ucsd.edu/

Hunting for apartments in San Diego sucks, I've done lots of of it. Best of luck! 😎

Like the title says, let's get it started in here. . .

Orientation starts in less than 3 days. I heard it can be somewhat boring though. At least they have a social event planned every evening (although I have no idea what "Pub Crawl" on Tuesday night is about--I assume it's just drinking which is fine by me.)

Im not going there, but from what I'm used to a pub crawl is basically bar-hopping. In the past, we have taken a bus to transport us to all the bars. Have fun =)

what happened to our pre-o party?

here's a silly question: where exactly are these orientation things taking place? more specifically, on monday at 8:30 am.

Nice. I've been training (going clubbing 3 x a week and drinking like a fish) so barhopping should be right up my alley. The bus is a great idea.

The pre-orientation party kind of died when hoping disappeared. I have no idea what happened to hear. Is she still going to UCSD med?

I'll invite people to come drink at my place but it's only 1 bedroom so only the cool ones can come. 😉

1) I don't think so and 2) I've been trying to figure out who you are without being marked myself...

anyone of you ms at ucsd get in after being put on hold for interview? do you know anything about what the chances are after you get put on hold? thanks...
