UCSD Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
awesome! well, i can bust a move up until the moderate level, then i definitely fall off on expert. i should practice more, huh? so you think you're going to be ddr champion...we'll see about that!

Hey all!

I decided to drop by during a research break...I just finished my first year at UCSD.

Welcome to all of you and best wishes!

DrDre

ok, so i'll admit i skimmed through this ENTIRE thread to try to get an idea of what a small minority of the incoming UCSD class might be like.

i noticed that awhile back y'all did some comparing of G-town vs UCSD. was hoping you (jalby, et al?) might have some insights into Baylor vs UCSD. i feel like i have a good idea what Baylor is about; just wondering what strengths UCSD might have that i've overlooked...

lol. You won't have a fun time at either school the for the basic sciences. They both are pretty hard on the students. There are two semi-famous SDNer's at Baylor, and they both didn't like Baylor's first two years at all. (On a side note, one of them left UCSD to Baylor off the waitlist because of an experience she had on the interview at UCSD)

Baylor does would end up giving you a higher board score, though. You know the 1.5 year basic science thing, then you can spend your time afterwards how you like. That gives them a ton of time to study, and that is probably solely the reason they have such high scores (and the smart people)

I donno which school I would choose here. Baylor, the school, is a great school. I would thrive in the type of environment they create, but I'm not sure most people would. I would have love the extremely compressed, and to a big extent, stressfull basic sciences that they do there. I definately think San Diego (the city) is a whole lot better than Houston. I'd probably go to Baylor 7 out of 10 times because I like almost everything else about the school. The women in San Diego are sooooooooo much better looking than Houston.

Ohhh. Wait, you asked for the strength's of UCSD. I wasn't paying attn. Compared to Baylor, Baylor the school would have most of the strengths. UCSD biggest stregths are location, and the fact it would be somewhat easier to get a better residency spot in california from UCSD. But your board scores would end up being ~7 points lower at UCSD (again, because of the time Baylor gives you), so I'm not sure how much of an advantage that would be. Baylor does do a great job setting you up to get the highest score that you can. Probably the best of any school I know of.

Hahaha. Yes, I think Baylor's affiliates are (much) stronger than UCSD's, but I'm not really sure how much of a role that really plays into a med student's education--i.e. am I really going to be rotating thru md-anderson, menninger clinic, etc? I also think the integrated curriculum at Baylor would be better for me since I'm not much of a go-to-class person anyway, but I don't think that's a deciding factor either.

So maybe I'll tell you the whole story... I'm in at Baylor's MSTP, but only MD at UCSD with the option to apply internally later. Assuming I do end up doing dual-degree, I'm not convinced that USLME score matters as much for residency matching (esp. for non-competitive ones)...

I'd take the MSTP at Baylor. Their program is a lot better than UCSD's MSTP program (but you can getting better sources of info on this than me). Also, with the free time at Baylor, you would probably finish your PHD faster than you would if you did an MD/PHD at UCSD. But yeah, if you are going into non-competative, it wouldn't matter. Heck, your PHD wouldn't matter.

this bump is dedicated to the UCSD SOM class of 2008

thanks for your advice jalby. baylor is one of those "full phd" places that doesn't like the idea of shortcuts along the phd.

Hi there!

Does anybody know of any dog parks around the school?

Yeah. There is one, but I'm not 100% sure how to direct you how to get there. It's right off the Sea World Exit. (I think)

warning: this is going to sound like a stupid question.

do people bicycle around the city for fun?

there is a beautiful, smallish dog beach between solana beach and del mar (10 minutes north of campus on Torrey Pines through Del Mar, west of the race track). Also another one in Ocean Beach, but it smells much worse. Don't go barefoot in either place.

This is meant to be a bump, but an entertaining one.

So I got my Dance Dance Revolution stuff a few days ago. Check out the hilarious warnings that came with the dance pads:

"Forbidden to use this product if your feet are seriously injured. Stop immediately."

"Young children must be guided to use it or need parents and teachers to accompany, in case to be tumbled by it."

"High technology product, do not apart, separate or fix it anyway. Or the damage can not be guaranteed."

"Please put it on a flat floor, but not too smooth."

"Strong jump or shake may cause influence to the video and audio output."

"Please do not jump strongly, that may bring troubles to the other person."

I didn't realize DDR had so many damned rules I have to follow. Regardless, are you guys and girls of UCSD ready to "get your groove on?"

Hey everyone! Anyone looking for a roommate? Or does anyone know of any open apartments/condos/rooms in La Jolla? If so, do let me know! How are all of you approaching housing??

I don't know SD very well and I was wondering if any of you people could give me some advise where would be the best place to look for an apartment except La Jolla (too expensive). Thanks

I'd say some good areas are Mira Mesa (relatively close but reasonablly priced) and Clairemont (pretty close too and even cheaper but ghetto.)

what's wrong with la jolla? how expensive is it??

is la jolla really one fo the richest areas in socal?

are you able to do two pads yet, alex?

Yes. All the homes there are super-nice and millions of dollars each. I think there are lots of +$10 million houses as well. Pretty much all retired rich people, CEOs, etc. I wouldn't want to live there cause everyone's old but I'd like to live in Rancho Santa Fe. Homes are $1-$3 million for the most part (some are almost $10 million as well) but they're much larger and overall pretty badass.

I haven't done two pads yet. I'm trying to unlock all of the songs but some of them are so hard (even if they're only level 5 songs.) It helps when you have a friend playing with you though--it's much easier to pass the songs for some reason.

pacific beach can be reasonable, and it's close to la jolla. although i live there and i heard someone being chased by the police the other morning... ie on foot, the cop was yelling at him to put his hands up. anyhoo, if you can handle roommates la jolla isn't even that expensive in comparison to anywhere else. you just have to find the right apartment complexes. if you can't handle roommates you're going to be paying a lot for your own apt, no matter where it is. $1K for your own apartment sounds about right, maybe even more than that, but if it's just your own room that would be ridiculous. the most i've paid for my own room was $600, and that was actually in mira mesa. sorry, that wasn't much help, was it...

i hear the average is at least $1k/month for your own bedroom.

I went down to La Jolla on Wednesday to do some apt searching-- I'm going to most likely share an apt or condo and have my own room-- and a month's rent is going to be about $700 avg. Rarely $650, some as high as $780.

wow...sounds like you're getting pretty good alex. i don't even want to play with you anymore!

Haha. I'm not that good. . .yet. I definately get tripped up when they have weird combos (like two arrows at the same time but not up/down or left/right which are the easy ones.) When it gets too fast, I can't catch up as well.

Well, you'd better start practicing if you want the UCSD DDR Cup.

I was is San Diego yesterday (Saturday) and I tried to find a place for couple of hours before I came back to LA. There are a lot of vacancies in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. I had no luck actually seeing any of the apartments. I think I will be back during the week again. Maybe I will have more luck then...

alright alright...i'll start practicing. you gotta admit, it can be a good workout!

anyone else want to join in on our future tournament??

if you guys have time, check out the class of 2007's page on the webportal. we are having heated debates on tort reform, iraq, bush, etc. eveyrone has a lot of free time on their hands now that we are on vacation 🙂

Hey, taking a break from the Baylor '08 thread and I just wanted to give a shout out to Newquagmire. Holla!

Jalby - I resent the above statement!

Did anybody get their financial aid offers yet? I just turned in my forms so I don't expect to hear anything for a week (or maybe a few weeks?).

just sent out the master promisory note from the lender as per UCSD SOM, so the loans are on their way at least. i got an estimated FA offer pretty early, don't know about anyone else.

anyone hear from teh financial aid office yet?

anybody know what the parking situation is like at the med school? i heard it's pretty pricey to get a permet for the parking lot close to our classes. also, is there a lot of traffic when classes start and end? are there usually spots open?
i'm planning to live in mira mesa... that's why i want to know how much more inconvenient transportation would be than living closer to campus.
thanks 🙂

I think that if you try to get an undergraduate parking spot, it's a little cheaper than the grad/med student parking spots.

I've been at UCSD as an undergrad and a masters student and I'm starting in fall at the SOM, so you could say I know the campus pretty well. For the past two years I've been cheating the parking system by parking just off campus and taking the shuttle onto campus. The City Shuttle, as it's called, goes to all the surrounding apartment complexes as well as a nearby mall and small shopping center. I just park in a parking lot or on the street and shuttle in. I haven't had to pay a dime for parking.

Just a question to all you guys that got in to UCSD. That's where I want to go, so what kind of stats did u guys have (if you don't mind me asking)?

dont be intimidated, they're just numbers.

can anybody explain to me why the orientation week pictures from last year are all shirt & tie?
