Messerschmitts, LT. If we all get into UCSD, we should have a party together. 😎

cool, party!!

i think penn state starts around the same time as VCU. i'm planning on moving mid/late July, unless, of course, i hear some GOOD NEWS from UCSD!!!!

i guess we should all just be thankful we don't have to take the MCAT tomorrow and we'll all be going somewhere next year!

For those of you who have been accepted already, when is the UCSD revisit day?

OK. It's been a while since anyone mentioned about UCSD waitlist movement (if there has been any.) Does anyone hear anything from UCSD lately? I saw some other schools' waitlist have been moving very slowly. I wonder if UCSD is going to wait after May 15th. I'm getting desparate but, oh well, what else can I do except just waiting.. 🙁

hi roo-

from what i understand, the waitlist won't really start moving until beginning of june. so we're in for another month of waiting... 🙁 don't worry too much about it, you've got an acceptance! i know the wait is tough, the main reason it's bad for me is i'd just like to know where i'm going to be next year (it's also poopie being waitlisted at your top choice)!

Hi, LT, I feel so bad about waiting to hear from another school since I ALREADY have an acceptance. I wish everyone gets only one acceptance at their top choice. 😍 Maybe something like residency program match. Then at least we don't have to wait for many months. I know I am saying some horrible things. I guess I get affected too much by the rigorous(!) waiting. If my understanding is right, you don't have any acceptance yet? I hope you hear from your top choice school soon even though it's from UCSD. 🙂 If you don't mind, can I ask you if you're reapplying this cycle? I thought about deferral and reapplying but it started sounding too greedy for me. Well, maybe I need more life lesson about how to be grateful with what I already have. Anyhow, good luck to all of us who are waiting to hear good news. :luck:

actually, i have an acceptance at penn state so i won't be reapplying (thank you!). if UCSD doesn't work out, i'll be sad, but i'm still going to be a doctor (even if it means leaving everything behind) which is the most important thing to me. i think you should stick it out because davis or SD will take you at some point. i know waiting sucks but we've waited so long, what's a little bit more... :luck:

Good to hear that you have an acceptance at penn state. One of my friends is there (MS1) and he's happy over there. I'm sure you will do just fine even though you end up going there.

I don't know why you say that Davis or SD will take me. But thank you for encouraging me. I hope you can hear good news soon. I also wish you the best luck. If we all ended up going out of state, maybe we can try to come back when we finish med school. You never know, we might end up going UCSD together. Or going to the same residency program in four years. 😉

i think sd or davis will take you because if i remember correctly, your stats and story are outstanding. wouldn't it be nice to end up in sd together! if i leave, i know i'll come back, i just don't know when. from what i've heard, it's even harder to get residency in cali! 🙁 only time will tell...

Someone wrote that the files get looked back again around this time of year, and this makes me think that UCSD is like UCI. The alternate list could really be a hold list and an asifyouhadachancehaha list. The hold listers get picked off throughout the year (see that poster who got taken off in the fall). Finally at the end of the year they get graded one last time to determine their waitlist position. Asuming no massive acceptance drop rate, the asifyouhadachancers get the axe.

Guys, if we get in, I'll bake for the class! :horns:

There is no "waitlist" at UCSD. The acceptable applicant pool is the unranked waitlist.

The people who say that the waitlist forms in June are wrong[earlier in the thread]?

It forms in May, is what UCSD told me. But it is comprised of those that are acceptable applicants. I assume that is what you mean when you say alternate?

Yeah, I meant acceptable pool. Got UCI's and UCSD's terminology mixed up.

Seems like there is some movement...I just got accepted today (interviewed on Feb 28).....Still not sure where I am going......

Well I am deciding between UCSD, UCSF and University of Wisconsin..... Financial Aid now has a lot of weight on my decision (unfortunately).

where you on the acceptable pool or did you get accepted straight?

Hmm...You know it was kind of weird, because I kept in contact with some of my fellow interviewees and they heard back (either rejection or waitlist) within two weeks. I never heard anything from the school and decided to write and email today (I dont like calling) and then oddly 10 minutes later I got a call from the School with an acceptance.

Congratulations! It's a good news for us, too, since it shows that the wiatlist is moving. I hope these kind of news keep coming until I hear a good news from UCSD. 😛

Just for everyone to know:

EDIT: just realized most people are obsessing over the wait lists. I believe most of the class comes from the waitlist, and people get in until late July (or possibly later). I believe many people will be notified early to mid June - check out previous years threads to see when people got their acceptances.

The "extreme detail" that has been rumored is only true for two micro exams (and MAYBE one of four anatomy tests). They are always tweaking things and the last few tests have been very clinically based. The detail is provided for you, but you don't have to know it all, especially if you just want to pass comfortably.

It's pretty competitive for about a year IF you want to get honors. If you don't want the competition then just don't compete - you should be able to pass pretty easily if you even bother trying. Most of those competing know they want to go into competitive specialties, in which case you probably should be trying your best to do as well as possible. the others just have that personality where they challenge themselves to do well on every exam - and I know there are a lot of those at the highest echelon schools.

Much of the time that is spent in lecture is replaced by PBL sessions in other schools, which are probably required. If you want PBL, then UCSD isn't for you. If you would rather not rely on classmates to teach you to be a doctor, UCSD is nice since lecture is available but not really required.

Anatomy second year isn't bad, since you learn some during physio in first year anyway which helps you remember, and it is closer to boards and path so you learn path better. Really, it is not that critical to DISSECT heart to understand its physiology. I really don't see any advantage in jumping into anatomy right away.

Maybe teachers don't teach directly to boards (though we have very good scores despite everyone saying we don't have enough time to study) but the information becomes very useful in clinic. I don't know how many times I have been working with a doc and something came up that I learned in class last year but passed it off as irrelevant.

thanks for the great info max! just out of curiosity, who teaches micro? anyway, hope to see you in the fall! i agree we probably shouldn't expect the waitlist to get moving until june sometime... i think we're all just anxious because ucsd is our top choice. 🙂

I agree with this completely.

To be honest I didn't bother with much of the details in micro and head&neck anatomy (which were the most detail-oriented) and I still scored above the class average every time. The popular fallacy here is that you need to memorize every little detail; in truth, some details are just not "testable" and many others can be inferred as needed if you take the time to understand the material. The trouble is, many people use memorization as a substitute for understanding.

Really? Awesome, only a few days until May 15! Oh, Jesus, Allah, Buddha, I love you all!! Please, I need some divine intervention! Save me from Ohio! 😉 (No disrespect to Ohioans or Ohio med schools...but c'mon it's UCSD, you gotta understand)

Got a phone call from Dr. Kelly yesterday... I'm out of the acceptable pool...

my first acceptance!!! 😀

I am ecstatic and got in... and know that rankings don't necessarily amount for much.. BUT

do you guys think it's weird that UCSD dropped from #7 for primary care to #33 in the US news rankings?

it really doesn't matter, but i find it rather strange cuz rankings don't normally shuffle that much. i wonder what happened. any ideas?

UCSD probably either forgot to submit some of its stats to US Weekly or someone used the wrong stats. I've heard of this happening at other schools too. Not too common, but it happens.

P.S. Congrats

Just called admissions. No 'waitlist' made today or anything. Same old stuff.

Don't they have a ranking of the waitlist? like top 1/3 or something? I'm tempted to call and inquire about this.

I WANT SOME UCSD LOVE!

Isn't a big criterion how many grads go into fields like internal med? I think UCSD grads have recently become more interested in specialties than in the past.

Of course, the training is the same, and there are still the same great opportunities for people interested in primary care, which just goes to show how futile it is to come up with a "primary care" ranking...(Not that research rankings are great either) The drop in ranking probably has more to do with the students and less to do with the school.

i hear ya buddy! let's hope we can all be classmates next year! :luck: i wish they would let us know where we sit in the "pool" so we'd know if there was even an inkling of a chance of being accepted...

Has anyone called the office and inquire about such rankings? Would they get mad?

AxlxA said:

i don't think they'd get mad but i don't know if they'll tell you much. it seems they're pretty tight lipped about their process. some things i've been wondering: 1. does a👎 (unranked) waitlist form and if so, when? 2. when will rejections start coming so those they aren't going to accept can move on with their lives (ie. me 🙁 )? my opinion? you might get a better response to those types of questions instead of asking about ranking. from what i know their admissions office is pretty nice. yvonne is always very helpful... keep us posted if you do indeed decide to call.

roo,

Help us out:

did you send in an LOI?

Were your numbers below, on par or above UCSD's?
(remember, this is an anonymous forum!)

I wish I could help you.

Yes, I sent in an LOI. I think I sent it last Thursday or Friday. I'm not sure if Dean Kelly got my letter before she called. I was so excited and forgot to ask about my letter. She already knew where I was holding an acceptance. She asked if I was still interested in coming to UCSD over the other school I was accepted. I said 'yes' right there and she told me that UCSD would contact the other school to let them know that I've changed my mind. 😛

She was very polite and nice. She even said that she appreciated to be patient and to keep having interest in her school. UCSD has been my first choice and I had no doubt to go there over any other school. I'm not sure if my LOI played any role since Dean Kelly mentioned that she wouldn't consider it during my interview day.

My MCAT is below the ave. I think their ave is 35? I'm by far below the ave regarding MCAT but my GPA is very close to 4.0. I'm not sure if my music background and being a post-bac pre-med (and a mom of two little children)played an important role to get me in. My EC must be just about average- 1.5 years of clinical volunteering, 1.5 years of hospice volunteering, 3 semesters of basic science research experience w/o any publication, and some other small activities such as leadership, community service, etc. Maybe they liked something about me. It's hard to tell what they liked about me.

I feel extremely fortunate to get into UCSD. I'm sure more people get in pretty soon. I just hope you will be one of the people who get accepted. I truly wish you the best luck. :luck:

congrats, roo, that's fantastic! i hope to join you this fall... 👍
