Jokestr said:I did an externship their last year....and got an interview their....but did not get in to their program....To put it this way, I was dissapointed I didn't get in, as they were my #1 ranked program.
About their program, from a semi-outsiders point of view...
1. GREAT surgical numbers.....they do a lot of surgeries, and sit in on a lot of surgeries. All specialties are strong.
2. The facutly are generally speaking great. They may have a quirk or two, but pretty much every area of medicine has a quirky doctor. Mostly though, they are all some of the leaders in their respected fields, and very nice, down to earth people.
3. The facilities are great!...Shiley is a gorgeous facility and the VA in San Diego has very new equipment and happy vets.
4. It's San Diego. Other than the cost of living, which might be higher than some areas, but lower than NY City, Chic, Boston, LA...I think it is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
5. The resident's definitely work hard, but they were generally a very happy bunch doing so. They were all very pleasant while I was their and they functioned well as a team.
6. Research opportunities are definitely available if you are looking for good research too. Last year we saw a slide, which put them in the top 10 for ophtho programs in funding for research. Glaucoma, Retina, and Cornea have a ton of bench stuff, while they also do a lot of research with their thyroid eye clinic.
Last year, I know they accepted two of their own(UCSD students), so that was 2/3 of their spots, but I would definitely apply their again, even if I didn't match their again...Incidentally, I am also VERY excited about the program that I did match at.
If anyone else can add anything, feel free, as I stated, I only spent a month their, but it was a good month.
Tell Dr. Levi I say hello and had only good things to say!
