UCSF Application 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey kmoogs, I also found out that I have a typo in one of my essays for the supplemental. I noticed it several months ago and thought I ruined my chance to receive an interview invite. I was stressing out about it a lot and blamed myself for being so careless. Luckily for me, I still got an interview invitation. But I'll be a lot more careful when proofreading my essays in the future. Good luck on your interview!

Thanks! Did you interview already?

Thanks! Did you interview already?

No, my interview is on 2/19. I'm so jealous of people who already interviewed past weekend. 🙂 Now they are done with an interview and just need to wait, although waiting is sometimes the hardest part.

I can't wait. I have the 2/19 day as well

My check in time is at 11:30 AM.

HELp!!!😎
I need help...so Im interviewing next week (2/12) and I wanted to ask feedback on how to work on the on site essay. Anyone have suggestions on what the best way to practice for the essay? any websites that u recommend going to with sample questions for essays to practice??? Thank you and good luck to those who have interviewed and are going to be interviewing!!!:luck:

I haven't had any interviews yet and don't know how these interview essays work; but I'll be practicing by going through my old lit. books and GRE practice tests. From my understanding they can be open ended statements from which you develop and elaborate in your writing. I don't know of any specific questions from the essays ... Sorry I can't help. It'll be fun! Don't worry about it too much

I'm in the same boat you are, haha :highfive:

hey kmoogs! thanks for ur imput...im just a little concerned.....when are u interviewing at ucsf???

Honestly, the best way to practice for the short essay...(wait for it)

is to write short essays. 😀

Just make sure you know how to write a essay that shows college-level writing that's well organized and concise (roughly one page) in an hour. Seriously, that's all you need to do.

i'm also interviewing on the 19th! see you guys there 😀

What time is your check-in, eggnacho? I guess by the time I get there at 2:30pm, kmoogs will be all done 🙂

Just 2 more weeks to go before our interview... :scared:

I'm super excited too about the 19th because that means we will all be done with our round of midterms. 😍 Looks like we'll be meeting a lot of SDNers on that day.

I'd recommend you take advantage of their policy and get all four.

More info on you from LORs = more chances to showcase your strengths and capabilities as an applicant.

Doh, wish I knew this before hand. I didn't know about SDN until long after I received the invitation.

Sort of wondered why this thread is so much less active than last year's UCSF thread ... so I did a quick breakdown ... because I like numbers :lame:...

  • 2 people declined interviews or accepted elsewhere
  • 30 people posted/applied but never updated status
  • 6 people rejected
  • 5 people interviewed but no date posted
  • 1 person interviewed 1/28
  • 2 people interviewed 1/29
  • 6 people interviewed 2/6
  • 2 people interview 2/11
  • 5 people interview 2/12 +1 ... 6
  • 5 people interview 2/19
  • (26 people interviewing) +1 ... 27
  • 10 people currently attending UCSF (P1-P3?)
  • 74 total unique posters +1 ... 75
At least there's a chance to meet a couple other SDN'ers during most of the interview dates.

Yeah, I'm really suprised you guys are so quiet this year, but then again last year's class has some big hardcore SDNers like me, ricetrix, strkrice and majority of our class has been on SDN in some form of another. 🙂

As a sidenote, interview tomorrow: yay !

I think the thread will explode once people start getting their decisions. Haha. For now everyone is probably nervous, or busy preparing for the interview (which I should start doing soon).

Yea, a lot of midterms and interviews around this time.

I just checked up on the other thread from last year, as of 2/6/2009, they were on page 6... so we're about even haha. Give it a month or two for the crazy to start. 🤣

🙄

Kmoogs you are sooo cute in reading the last year's thread , but it's ok - I read literally every UCSF thread when I was applying.

SDN is a phenomenal website because it brought our class together and layed out the foundations of friendships that strengthened once we started spending more time together offline. Once the acceptance letters started coming in, we were already setting up and planning our class gatherings and get togethers for the spring and summer. By the time school started in the fall, majority of us were already close friends and neighbors, not just classmates. For that, I love SDN and I dearly love my class. 🙂

Haha. I think a lot of entering classes are fairly tight knit; its a good thing. My friend at Stanford for B-school traveled all over the world with his classmates during the summer before their first year. I also spent a week in Boston this past year with my former roommate during MIT's orientation week and the incoming MBA students were practically life-long friends before school even started lol

It was nice to meet everyone who interviewed today in the morning section. 😳 Best of luck to you, guys ! 🙂

hi ice queen, my check-in is 11:30 am so i will be with kmoogs.. i'm already getting pre-interview jitters.

I'm so glad interviews are done with ... now the waiting is left.

Unfortunately, my waiting starts with my flight back home getting canceled. Still, I tell myself, it's good that the snowstorm on the east coast hit now instead of before cuz I might have missed my interview otherwise...!

But the students I talked to during the chatroom and whatnot were super nice and, well, happy! There really were no other good words to describe them. If any of the current students were there today, thanks for your time and words. It was fun talking, although I think I was still a bit nervewracked from the interview... lol

I had a great time at the interview yesterday. It was fun grilling p1s in the chat room. You guys were great! Definitely calmed my nerve before the interview.

I'll be interviewing on the 12th. Check-in at 11:30am. Can't wait to say hello and meet everyone! Definitely feeling the jitters.

Me too! It is so soon! But I am getting really excited!!!

Bored and waiting for class to start... here are some things to think about

Some obvious questions they might ask at your interview;

Why UCSF?
Tell me about yourself
Why did you choose pharmacy? Or Why do you want to continue a career in pharmacy
What distinguishes you from other candidates?
What classes in your major did you like best? Least? Why?
What motivates you most in pharmacy?
Describe how you handle stress
What do you consider your greatest strengths?
What personal developments have you used to overcome any weakness?
Discuss two accomplishments from college

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I have more but I don't have my computer with me... probably post more after the midterm today 🙂

More random questions to think about ... (am I even thinking in the right direction? lol. I've never had a PharmD interview before)

Does your GPA provide an accurate representation of your academic ability?
How has your education prepared you for a Pharm.D. at UCSF?
Define "ethical"
Random situational/ethical questions.
If a patient wanted a drug that conflicted with your beliefs/morals, what would you do?
What challenges do you see in the field of pharmacy?
What current issues do you see influencing the future direction of pharmacy and/or pharmacists?
What type of role do you see yourself filling as a pharmacist?

These are very good sample questions. I was asked most of them. Do not worry people just be yourself

I will always remember the UCSF interview I just had. I felt like I revealed things about myself that I didn't even know I had in me. It was inspiring and frightening at the same time. I was literally asked "What is the meaning of life?" toward the end of the interview. It surprised me, but at the same time it felt like a natural progression of the conversation we had had up until that point. The interviewers really seem to know how to get you engaged.

My advice for anyone else is just be open. There will be some questions you will not be ready for, but if you keep an open mind and get into the conversation, it can go to some really interesting places and take on a life of its own.

I'm not sure if this was a good thing for me or not, but I truly enjoyed it when it was all said and done. Very unique.

This was my first time in California as well. The SF area was just beautiful. I can't believe I had to go back to NJ. Honestly, this seems like hands-down the best school/place to study. The only drawback is the outrageous prices, which will only go higher in the next few years.

Good luck to anyone else interviewing there and try to make the best of the situation. I hope I get in, but if I don't, at least I know that I gave everything and got an amazing experience in return.

Ooooh, I hope I get a question like that. *insert smiley emoticon with stars in eyes*

Where are you from in NJ? And you become a resident of CA after 1 year anyways ... out of state tuition really only applies for your first year.

edit: Oh you mean general living costs? Living costs balance out since property taxes in NJ are borderline absurd... (unless they changed since I left NJ? It's been a while...)

kmoogs - Yeah, I know I become a resident after 1 year, but the propsed tuition over the next four years for in-state at UCSF will be approximately 30k, 33k, 36k, and 38k. The out-of-state tuition for next year will be 42k. All thanks to the recently passed propositions by the UC school board. When you take into account living in the city, parking, commutes, etc., it becomes a bit scary. And since I'm not from the area, it is just a little bit more difficult to have a full grasp on the options available. Additionally, I will be 30 when I start Pharmacy School. When I graduate, I will be 35. Is it worth it to start my life anew with almost $200k in debt at that point? I will be a little bit older than most and I have to plan out my life a little more carefully. At the same time, I am excited about the new opportunities, possibly in a school that is the best of the best - a place that could take me on a life journey that I didn't have in me.

I'm from Hackettstown, close to Delaware Water Gap. 1 hour from New York. Yeah, prices in NJ are ridiculous as well. But staying on the east coast at UB for example for $18k yearly and very affordable living, gives me something to think about.

Hey I think you were in my group. Were you in the afternoon group? Are you tall and had glasses on? I'll be 32 when I start school this aug. Don't let the number get in the way of what you want to do. 😉

I see... I used to live by Princeton Jct but that was a lifetime or two ago.

Just want to say hi to all and good luck to everyone who has made it this far, the interview cycle. I will be interviewing this Friday, Feb. 12. I am extremely nervous, though. Thanks to the P1 and P2s who are still posting on this forum. It does motivate and help us potential candidates.

Thanks for sharing. Good luck. Sounds like it flowed naturally and that was probably what they were looking for.

Hello. Thanks for the feedback and I am glad you had a great interview. Just a quick question, I know it stated on their website that the interview is usually about 45 min...did yours last that long and perhaps went over?

Me too! It is so soon! But I am getting really excited!!!

Just wondering...how did they notified you that you are put on the waiting list? Is this different than what people are posting here regarding "active consideration" status?

I don't know what active consideration is, but I believe UCSF has a ranked waiting list that comes out after the interviews are over... but I'm interviewing too so I could be wrong 🙁

Hey, thanks for helping answering my question. I read that she was put on waiting list at USC. So, I was wondering when did they notify her of the waiting list status. I'm interviewing at UCSF on 2/19 and super nervous right now...how long was your interview? Over 45 min (45 min is what I read from UCSF website). Thanks again and good luck!

If you're asking me, I don't know because I don't interview until 2/19 haha

They allot an hour for your interview, but most people take about 30-45 minutes. My interview was about 40-45 minutes.

I heard that UCSF groups the interviewees on certain dates by regional area. So if I'm going on Feb. 12th and am from So Cal, I take it that there will be many other So Cal people on the same day? Who's with me? Good Luck! Three more days until the BIG day!:scared:

I'm so terribly nervous and excited....my interview is tomorrow (2/11). Anxiety and caffeine do not mix! Anyone else scheduled for tomorrow? Anyone else from San Francisco??

It's so awesome to see someone else from the city, if you get in, you can be the go-to person for all of your classmates with good food places referrals and awesome things to do. Good luck with your interview !

Hopefully no one from the east coast is interviewing tomorrow ... I just saw the news when I got back from class 😱

Thanks for being so kind in helping us answering the endless questions and giving us hope. Do you know if P4 also interviewing us or is it just P1-P3 Pharmacists? Thanks a whole lot!

The bulk of students who will be interviewing you guys are P3's and some P4's who are staying in SF for their rotations (though there are some who actually do fly in if they're not in the Bay to interview you guys!). The P1's and P2's can only do stuff like the chat rooms and tours and we can't do any interviews till we become P3's, which is probably a very good thing. 🙂

Speaking of which, I'll be doing the chat room tomorrow afternoon. 🙂
