Hi Dr. Bombay,

When we practice at lab, are we allowed to put our typodont on Mannequin? Or we should bring a mole with us?

Thanks

you are allowed to put the typho on the maniquinn

I have not received the UCSF package till now! Anyone who has the instruction booklet, and can please scan it and send me the PDF? I'd be extremely grateful!

Thank you bombay!

I visited UCSF dental school today, really love it 🙂. Everybody is so nice and ready to answer me any question 🙂.

When I parked my car at garage, it surprised me that I should go to P8 to get to Parnassus Ave 🙂. then recognized it's SAN FRANCISCO!

student store is located on the first floor of the dental school. You should tell them you will attend the interview, then they will sell items to you.

Hello All,

I have been invited for UCSF interview/bench test. I just registered for the event by ASDA UCSF. Thank you krishdentist and BombayBDS and all the helpful people on this thread.

I have a quick question: The list of instrument s says we would be provided tungsten carbide whereas the booklet says we will be preparing with diamond.

Please help!

everyone (including us,the students) use Diamondpoints to prep. the carbides are there to help with finishing if u wish to use them.

Agree with BombayBDS.. Cut with diamonds and if you like you can polish with carbide. It is not mandatory to polish your prep in the end. Because we are cutting with diamonds it is going to make scratches on the tooth surface. It is fine as long as you cur with proper dimensions. But if your hand skills are good and controlled you can polish it with carbide burs to make it look good. Just a tip of nice presentation of your work.

Thank you for the prompt response. One more question: I have columbia typodont we will be provided Kilgore for UCSF bench test. Shall I buy Kilgore now? Is there too much of difference?

Its not too much of difference in size but there is a definite difference in Hardeness. Kilgore are softer than Columbia. I would suggest you to practice kilgore at least to practice session. If you can't buy the kilgore typo then at least buy the teeth so that way you will have the feel of cutting it. More over UCSF store has kilgore teeth only so bring your stock of columbia teeth if you come for the practice session. Coumbia typodont will not feet in the manikins without a special plate attached on top of to it. you will get it from UCSF store. It just has a special size hole which will be the size of the manikin screw. so you can attach your columbia typodont to the manikins.

If u can afford it, definately change.

aaaah bummer, did the math of the ticket change and the extra days w/ hotel reservations and its just waaay too much...its already a huge sacrifice im making flying all the way from Dominican Rep with the costs of all. Guess i'll have to miss out and be in total disadvantage 🙁

I hav questions regarding Facial margins of anterior PFM.
1. Should it be a shoulder margin?
2. how can it be done by using 856-016 since the tip of bar is pointed?
3. do i need to angled shoulder margin?
it will be great if i can get the answers asap.

i will say yes to second one: heavy chamfer in Buccal and regular chamfer in Lingual.
I'm trying with 856-016 to get a shoulder and the result ain't good. 🙁
Hope i get answers from current UCSF students ASAP.
Thanks in advance.

1. Should it be a shoulder margin? it is a shoulder margin on PFM
2. how can it be done by using 856-016 since the tip of bar is pointed?

use the 856-016 bur initially which will round off the margins and then create the 90 degree
angle with the hatchet

I hope this helps.

1.PFM has shoulder margin on buccal and chamfer on lingual because of metal colar
2. Do initial prep with 856-016 and then I use another -016 bur with flat end tapered diamond( I believe its 857-016 but I am not sure). I create shoulder with that. or as greeny said above you can do it with hatchet but I prefer bur.
3. PFM has 90 degree shoulder margin. no bevel. no angle.

Now if you ask me about if you will get 857-016 in the exam? Well I am not sure. They should give you if the exam is about PFM. or use hatchet technique. Ideally UCSF is so nice that if you need something in the exam and they fill its necessary then they will provide it any how.👍

Thanks Krishdentist and greeny.
I know the bar u mention but it's not in the list that UCSF sent .
I will try with hatchet today and let's see how the results gonna be. 🙂

my 2 cents-follow the hand out they sent you. if it says heavy chamfer, then it has to be a heavy chamfer... and not a shoulder.

on the other hand, if u can make one correctly, U probably have the skills to make the other as well.

You are totally right . It just takes a little more practice to reach excellency. and all of you can do it.
And ya please follow instructions on your handout closely. We don't get handouts so we are not sure exactly what it says. Please try to follow the steps given in that. That is what you have to achieve in your final preps.👍

Hello,

I am trying to find a place to stay near UCSF for bench test. The hotels are all $100 and above.

Thank you krishdentist for you help. I have a question: You said that it should be shoulder on buccal and chanfer on lingual for PFM. What about the mesial and distal? Do we go from shoulder to chamfer gradually while moving from buccal to lingual proximally?

Also, What is the difference between heavy chamfer and chamfer?

Thank you.

Hello All,

Is there a trick or tip to avoid nick on the adjecent tooth, given we would not be provided matrix band?

When making PFM on maxillary and mandibular molar, which bur do we use to prepare:

1. Lingual fossa?
2. Cingulum?

When we reduce the incisal edge and the cusp of the canine, it is a bit thick. How do we slightly reduce the thickness (sharpen the edge)? lingually or buccally?

There is a transition of margin between chamfer and shoulder in proximal side. I can't explain it in written words. once you do that transition, its really hard to say if it is shoulder to chamfer or chamfer to shoulder!

Your last question is not easy to explain with words. If you coming for practice session, many seniors might be of help to explain it in better words. If you need an exact difference then you should check it in Shillingburg.

I will be highly grateful

Forgot to ask this question during practice :-(.

when we prep canine, should we do a lingual fossa or keep the lingual ridge? In the prep instrucation, it just said using football shape bur to prep lingual fossa, but didn't say what the final shape it is.

Please help. Highly appreciate!

hey guys,
do you wear formal on the first day, bench test day, or you wear scrubs or is there any place we can change?
good luck

Mary Pham told me to wear scrubs or comfy clothing

I just wanna take a second and say "BIG THANKS" to those current UCSF IDP students who came and helped us with the practice before the actual exam. Truly, you guys are amazing! 👍 It is such a selfless effort you put in for others!

Unfortunately I didn't have IV at UCSF but I am waiting for the results of USC. I heared all 4 CA schools declare results on same day. Do you know the expected date? Thanks. (Sorry to ask it here but there is no active senior on USC thread! )

I have heard student saying 21st of Nov. Usually It starts with UOP in the morning and then UCLA, USC and UCSF in the evening. This month will feel like a year long for all of you.:xf:
