hey folks,
i thought i would open a new thread for poeple who have decided to join ucsf 🙂
pls post any info u get frm the admissions office or international services or anything else.

the school is going to send us a package regarding loan information etc during the first week of jan. the financial dept will also contact us. this is the info i got
whn i talked to jerry lopez of the financial dept. thrs nothing for us to do till we get the package.

does anybody have any info as to whn we will get the i-20? and wht do we have to show the school (documents , financial resources etc) to get I-20

also, does anyone know whether ucsf allows students to join school on h4 whn f1 is in process?

some more info
the office of international services called me(after i called twice and left msgs 🙂 ,)
people who want to convert frm h4 to f1 will be given I-20 only in jun after the school starts.

Hi Ann,
Did they tell you why they need to wait till when school starts ..?

Hi Ann
it's good that you have started this thread. This way all of us who are planning to join UCSF can share info..
anyone there who is planning to study in UCSF on H4 visa only?would like to know.....

HI Ann, its a good idea u started the thread.
I am from canada and will need F1.
the admissions office told me that they will
send us the finance statement (CFS) which we have to
complete and mail them back and then they will
send the I20.

its bcoz on h4 one can enter the country and be here even b4 school starts . we r resident aliens. but international students frm other countries like desidoc , need to get a students visa even to start school. thts y the school gives i20 to h4 people late and for international students b4 the the school starts.
but i dont understand y we need to wait till tht time to get I 20?
i guess it makes matters easier for thm.
r u also joining ucsf carabelli?

Here's what i think is happening..what the person from your admissions office must have meant was that you may start school on an h-4 but it will be june by when you will actually get your F1. This is because it take at least 4-6 week for the approval to come through. Anyway if you're on a H-4 you need not worry whatsoever..!!As far as waiting till school starts for an I-20, its very unlikely so its best to call again and get more info as it is best to convert on an F-1 so that you can work 20 hrs per week at start of school and for that the process needs to start as soon as possible.
Do keep us posted if you get some other info...!!
I'm definitely joining USC's program...

carabelli , i think you got things mixed up , anne was talking about ucsf (university of california, san francisco) each school has a differant timing for differant prceedures , and as for working 20 hours a week during school ....you don't need to worry about that because you wont have time to breath in the first semester forget working, however if you are able to work (if you find the time) good for you , i wish you all the best . from what i heard the USC program is very demanding especially in the first semester , you will have to stay much more than 5 pm to finish the things you need to finish for the course.

best wishes

hi ann
it is a good thing you have started this thread
all of us who have decided to join ucsf should give each other as much information as we know
also any of you have more information about the housing ,please do post the information here
as desidoc, I am also from canada and will need a student visa
I am hoping to get canadian citizenship before june , so things would be little easier as we have to take the visa at the border
and any of you have more information about student loans which are offered at the lowest interest rate , do let us know
well i guess we will get more information only once the school starts in january.
so we should just relax right now and enjoy

Hi nimeshshingala

as for the housing , i've spoken to barbara and i was told that everything has to be done online , so i guess we have to fill out the online application and send it http://stu-housing-mac17.ucsf.edu/cho/
, otherwise if you plan on finding a place out of the school housing you can check the craig list which has some housing options in SF http://www.craigslist.org/
also you can check the off campus housing in SF at this site
http://stu-housing-mac17.ucsf.edu/cho/OffC_lt_gocl.html
as for loans the financial department of UCSF will be sending us info about that in january.

i have booked the housing application online and they have put me on waiting list
i was wondering if the off campus housing is cheaper
by just looking at the website , we will not know ,I guess we will have to go personally if we are looking to book or sign a lease for a apartment off campus
I was wondering if any of you who have been accepted at ucsf have looked into the housing off campus , and do you plan to go before the school starts to check on it
I guess the students who are already in ucsf should give us more information

i think off campus ischeaper if u share with roomates. but if u r with family maybe school housing might workout cheaper. u should check every possible option though.
if we put our name in the housinglist thn do we have to take it , if we get the on campus housing? do they penalize u for pulling out of the list?

hi mtj
I am sorry , I mentioned the word "waiting list".
Actually , I recieved a email as soon as I completed my housing application online on December 10th and they send a attached file which says , my status is "waiting approval"
after that i have not heard from them
they gave me a request Id number
I will call them once the school starts in january
by the way the UCSF housing service number is
415-4762231

hey,
ucsf also offers shared apt housing.....
it is located close to ucsf.....it takes about 8 min to commute by ucsf shuttle service daily....
so u can choose a roommate and apply for shared apt housing ....if 2 people share 1bhk then it comes to approx $500 odd including electricity, water and utilities....
the only drawback is that next year most probably they r going to move the shared apt housing to a different location which is a 30 min commute by muni ...
i spoke to an ID3 student at ucsf and he told me this.....
so we can call up and ask if they will be really shifting to a diff place....

Thanks for the info. Ann!! 👍

hey friends,
regarding showing financial documentation for getting an I 20...this is what most schools and INS wants...You should be able to show liquid assets covering the first year expenses and immovable property which can be converted to liquid assests, if need be, for the second year.
I am already on a F1 and this is what I did to get my I20

Hello guys,
Is there any who is in waiting list in UCLA but joined uCSF other than Ann, Starwars, and Desidoc? 😕

Hi all!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I too have been accepted to the UCSF IDP program. I discovered this thread. It's great for making pals and sharing important info about school. I am a dentist from India, currently in California doing MPH. I don't have any info. I guess I was sleeping while everyone was applying for housing and stuff!!!!!!!
But thanks for posting web addresses and phone no....Now I can get going............
Stay well!!!!

hey guys
I was wondering if any of you have recieved any more parcels from ucsf especially the financial information packet
please do share your information here

did any1 call the international dentalprogram people regarding the financial package?
b4 the school closed for the holidays, i talked to a person in the financial dept, he said we would be getting a package by first week of jan abt the lenders etc.
but on jan3 whn i talked to barbara richardson, she said tht only international students (according to thm - poeple who need students visa to enter the country) will be getting the package. i really didnt understand this at all. she also said tht financial dept would contact us.
can somebody call thm up and get more info about this? i am sure they should send some info abt lenders etc., even if they had given the lenders list in the documents which had been given to us during the interviiew

hi guys,

heard that the financial aid package will be sent by the end of jan

disclaimer 😛 :- ..not responsible for late packages or any unmet expectations from this post 😛

Yesterday, I recieved a financial package from UCSF....I need to show assets covering the estimated expenses for two years for them to process my I20

hey ramya,
did u receive a confidential financial statement form with it?can u tell me how much r the projected expenses for 2005-06?also what is the deadline for showing the tuition etc?
thanks

Hi Guys!
Can anyone help me here to understand this? i am sure eveeryone got the Certification of Finances Form. we are supposed to fill this form and attach required documentation to prove that we will be able to pay for school and then we shall be issued an I-20 form.........I know that much..........
The issue is that I (and I am sure most of you guys) am planning to apply for private loans and pay for school with that money..........
So, does that mean that we apply for loans first and then after getting approved, we attach a copy of the award letter to this certificaton of finances form. This will take care of 1st yr fee-$94100...... and for 2nd yr, we'll have to show other assets like bank statements etc. Is this correct?.....I call the Financial aid office and the admissions office almost everyday....but the fail to understand my question and keep directing me to each other to clarify......
Kindly enlighten.............

hey starwars,
it is just the financial documentation that we have to show to get an I20. I don't have the documents right now...but it's approximately 166,000 $ for 2 years. I shall call them up for further information....They want us to attest the bank certificate and the sponser's bank has to sign on the form given by them....I guess, an insolvency certificate where the Bank doesn't take any responsibility should be sufficiant..if yes, i was thinking of getting the property assesed by a CA and request the bank to give me a certificate based on it.

Starwars,
They have not given any deadlines...they have still not come up with 2005-6 tuition..they have just mentioned that there will be approx. 6% increase.Hope I am recalling the exact figures....I will verify and let you know...Have u not recieved it yet???

well i recieved it yesterday
they have not given any deadline to submit it
I have the same questions as soulfull
do we have to show them enough money to support for two years
because if you are taking private loans as most of us are, than the banks usually give us finance for one year at a time
so how can we show them two years of financial support???
well
, wewill have to work on it
if others know better please do give your feedbacks here
and pepsi you should be getting it soon because it came by regular mail

iasked the same question to the international srvices in dec. they told me tht the first and second yr expenses total amount has to be shown as liquid assets to get i-20. the first yr u can borrow, for the seco nd yr's amount u can ask ur relatives or friends to show money as if they r going to sponser u forthe second yr education. i wasnt exactly clear about this, so u guys might want to askthe international services urself. ask for susan halim ,she is helpful

Friends, Romans and Countrymen!!!! (hah!)
I think I figured it out..........I talked to Barbra...and the finanial aid office.....
So, the moral of the story is........we'll be mailed a financial aid info package in the last week of jan or few days after that......Based on that we'll fill out a loan application for the UCSF financial aid office....and they will direct us to lenders from which we'll chose and after submitting all paperwork, will be approved for loan (for 1st year of IDP)........This will give us an award letter of loan............. But for the 2nd year we shall have to show liquid assets.....
Then we complete the Certification of finances form....and we get an I20...........and sigh! then we can go to school.......
I hope I am right! Please crosscheck by bugging the Admm office and finan, aid off. again and again......................and keep posting your findings..........
Fight on!
Happy weekend!

Friends............
The info I gave yesterday is correct.......I crosschecked with Susan Halim, Services for International Students and Scholars...
For all of you who want more clarification on I-20 and visa status......

Hi,
U dont need to buy any extra software and the basic softwares are more than enough. U need to have Microsoft word and powerpoint.

Hi ann,
Any internet speed will be fine. I THINK, but some online presentations are very large files and i dont know whether the dialup can handle it or not as i use highspeed.

All the best
