They just called me, and I'm in!! I'm still in shock... any other SDNers thinking about going there next year? Since it's such a small program (12 students), it'd be nice to chat with my potential classmates.

Congratulations, Wahoo!

If I were in your place, it would be a dream come true!

Do you now if they call for MD applicants too? Again, congrats! :D

Thanks isa!
I'm pretty sure that UCSF just sends snail mail to let you know their decision... Their admissions office is totally separate from the Berkeley/UCSF program's admissions office.

How exciting! Congrats!!!

BTW Are you really a Wahoo? Just asking because I am.

What program is this?

It's a 5 year program... First 3 years at Berkeley in an entirely problem based curriculum with a total of 12 students. While at Berkeley, you do an independent research project & thesis, and receive a Berkeley Master's degree. Then it's 2 years of clinical training at UCSF (you join the class at UCSF just like it's year 3&4 in the regular UCSF program), which leads to an MD from UCSF.

Hey Wahoo
I just interviewed there recently. Congrats!!!!!! Its a great place to be! How long did it take them to get back to you after interview?

That sounds like an amazing program, Wahoo! Only 12 students? You rock!

Good luck and have an amazing 5 years!

mma-- Thanks, I appreciate the words of encouragement!

Lady in Red-- I interviewed out there back in November, so it's been a couple months. I'm not sure, but I'd imagine that their turnaround time will be quicker now that we're later into the process. What did you think of the program? Would you choose to do the JMP over plain UCSF?

A few questions if you don't mind:

What can you get your masters in? Anything?

What are the goals of the program? To create research scientists?

Can you apply to both JMP and UCSF?

Thank you!

Good questions. The masters is in "Health & Medical Sciences." It's a program that is crafted to your individual interests, but the central mission is to gain an understanding of the broader context of medicine (ie cultural, ethical, scientific aspects). So, the goal is not to create research scientists per se, but rather to create inquisitive clinicians with a deep understanding of the many facets of medicine.
If you're intrigued, the best thing to do (rather than read my poor description) is to go to their website:
http://socrates.berkeley.edu/~jmp-hms/

Oh, and yes, you can apply to both UCSF and the JMP. In fact, it's effectively required, because the JMP only pulls their applicants from the UCSF interview pool.

Wow! Sounds amazing! Kudos to you!

Thanks for the info...it sounds like a great program! Congrats!

"Plain UCSF"??? I take offense at that... j/k :p
Congratulations on getting in! If you have any questions about UCSF in general that I could answer, please let me know. :D

the best thing about this program is that you get a lot of funding for your first three years and basically pay next to nothing! Also, you get a thesis out of it! I am sure when you apply to residencies, you'd appreciate you had that thesis done. Plus, the small class size eliminates the necessity to 'get to know professors'-they get to know you whether you want it or not! The students i met were great, very smart and enthusiastic. the office staff really cares about applicants. I don't want to sound like I am selling it, but it is really an honor to even interview there--they only invite 50 people. So Wahoo, you must be really special to be accepted. they told me I can hear from them as late as May! It definitely has a lot of pluses over UCSF, the only thing is it is 5 years. I think if you got into JMP, you'll definitely get into UCSf and then the hardest thing would be to decide.
congrats again!~

congratulations!
Bring out the alcohol!!!!!1

In reference to the thread "Can you believe this stuff", who'd you sleep with. If you didn't, how'd you get in (are you best buds with God). And if you really did sleep with someone, give out the number i'm sure a few guys and (in the name of fairness and equality) girls would love to give that road a try.

Ducam--

Congratulations Wahoo! It looks like we're going to be classmates next year! :D

Congrats, Congrats!!
Are you familiar around Berkeley/SF? A good combo program and place to live! SF can be a bit depressing in summer with such a heavy overcast (not to mention a 60F T even in SUMMER) BUT, Berkeley kicks a#$%$#...much much warmer and allows carving of 20+ body tatoos (I'm having a trouble hiding all of mine under my interview powersuit esp. for some East Coast interviews...damn those conservatives! ;) , ok 20 was an inflated figure. :) )!

Back to the JMP: I've met really cool JMP students. They seem to devote a lot of their time helping out CAL premeds and promoting community health. If this becomes your final choice, PM me if you have any Qs about the areas.

Congratulations to you too Paisley! Did you hear from the JMP, or UCSF? I'm still waiting to hear from the regular MD program.

Patiently Waiting-- Seeing as I'm from Virginia, the only thing I really know about the area is what I learned when I interviewed there in November... it's foggy, relatively warm, and extremely expensive. It seemed like an awesome place to be though! Sounds like if I come out to Berkeley I might need to get a tatoo or two to fit in :)

Does anyone else have the letter from the JMP post-interview that says "you are on the list from which the class and waitlist will be drawn" (in MAY!!!)? if they've already been accepting people, is this just a list they will use to fill spaces of people who withdraw? i would ADORE being in this program...
