What about you Trying? Are you leaning towards any particular school?

its sf v. hopkins right now. i go back and forth and think about it all day long. i guess i need to talk to some more people - what makes you so strong on sf?

Both schools are absolutely amazing, but in the end it really depends on what school is a better "fit" for you. Location is a huge factor to consider, because SF and Baltimore are very different. I went to college in the Bay, and I love everything about that area. There is so much culture and always something new and interesting to do. In terms of the school, UCSF is strong in both research and primary care, with an incredibly diverse student body. It is also a bit cheaper.

I sat in on a class on my interview day, and I loved the way the professor and the students were engaged in a dynamic dialogue. I just looked around the room, the students truly seemed happy. I also have a few friends who go there, and they still have plenty of time to devote to outside interests (quite important for me).

So there you go... my little rant about why UCSF is perfect for me 🙂

it seems you've really found a perfect place. one of the reasons i like hopkins is because i didn't go to a big name undergrad so in the future, if i want to get involved in things outside of medicine, it would be nice to have that big name. don't get me wrong, within medicine, i know ucsf has a great rep, but i'm not so sure how people outside of it feel the same way. another this is that i went to a public university and it would be a little nice to go to a private school. but i guess most importantly, i've lived in california all my life, tons of my friends are from norcal so i go up there a lot and i'd be nice to life somewhere totally different for a couple of years. but how knows, maybe after second look my mind will change!

Well I guess if you are pursuing a career in medicine, the "big name" is really important to people within medicine, no? You bring up other good points... I guess you just have to wait to see how you feel after second look weekend!!! 🙂

Come on, there must be other UCSF accepted applicants out there. I look forward to seeing you all at 2nd look weekend! Dancer77, have you started looking into housing yet? I'm not sure if I want to live on- or off-campus. I've lived on-campus for the first two years of my college career and hated the restrictions/special contracts. I started living off-campus and loved it! But, I hear that it's more expensive to find off-campus housing. What do you all think?

I want to start looking for housing, but I think it's a tad bit too early because I want to live off campus and rental postings are earlier move-in dates. The on-campus housing there is in an area that is REALLY humid/wet (eh?). I think I want to get a place in the Inner Sunset neighborhood surrounding the school... it'll be within walking distance, and I've heard a lot of students live in that area.

Can't wait to meet you guys at 2nd look!

Hey all,

I just got accepted(on my bday) so I've been on cloud 9 since then! The pre-allo thread is crazy busy! Trying - I'm completely sold on the UCSF. I understand how u feel about going away - I grew up in the bay, did undergrad in Berk, and now UCSF. What I've heard about Hopkins in terms of quality of life is that it's in a sketchy area in Baltimore. And my impression from my friend that grew up there is that in comparison there's not much to do.

In terms of housing, majority live in the inner sunset. More charming areas would be Cole Valley or pac heights which are more $$$ An alternative to inner sunset is inner richmond if you don't want to be too close but not too far from UCSF. For a bit cheaper, you could look in the sunset and outer richmond but it is farther. Otherwise there's new housing at Mission Bay and there are direct shuttles which is about a 25min ride.

-->Ecstatic to join an awesome bunch

hey kc, congrats! what a great bday gift! does anyone know what ucsf has planned for the second look?

Hey all! I am definitely going! This was my top choice from the beginning, and we just found out that my SO got into law school in SF, so things are falling together perfectly 🙂. As for housing, I know a bunch of people in SF, so am hoping to network through them to good housing opps. I didn't know they had on-campus housing - does anyone have the link to that? Can't wait to see you all at Second look. I looked through the other acceptees on mdapps and I think we're going to have some good times 🙂. I'll be bringing my SO to second look as well, so if you guys have boyfriends/girlfriends/fiances/wifes/husbands/partners, bring them too!

I like that on-campus is cheaper. But, living on your own offers a lot more freedom, which would be preferable. I'm not worrying about it too much for now (although searching through craigslist.com is a lot of fun).

I was pulling for you in the Pre-Allo since you were also waiting to hear! My bf won't be around for 2nd look weekend but you two must be ecstatic with everything falling into place. FYI - per your post in the pre-allo, I'm 26 and very excited about your mom's cooking! 😀

In terms of 2nd look, they just have that itinerary in the packet. And I'm sure ppl are going to catch a glimpse of the nightlife too.

I've been looking on craigslist too and there are some enticing listings...but I don't know who I'll be roomies with yet - that's the tricky part.

I wonder when more people are going to come to this thread cuz I from the pre-allo one, there's lots of us.

Dear All,

I have nothing to contribute to this thread as of yet besides the fact that it's 5 AM and I haven't slept all night because my head is still somewhere on cloud nine from the big envelope that I received yesterday morning. :-D <- still grinning

Sincerely,
Angelique

i still can't believe you got your acceptance on your birthday. you stars must be all aligned.

i grew up in the bay too - but the the east bay.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to type that out for me!!! I wonder why it wasn't included in my packet... maybe they hadn't planned the event in time to send it out in last month's packets?

I'm so excited for that weekend! I took a year off to relax, and now I'm just super anxious to get things going haha.

thanks for typing that out guys! so is it certain that we will get our finaid package during second look?

Seems like it - maybe even before then. The admssions office probably didn't have this much figured out when people got accepted Dec/Jan.

i'm in the process of filling out my css profile. boy, is that thing a beast!

I did the profile, fafsa. But, I'm hanging on to that lender promissory note and the UCSF application for aid. Is it worth sending them in now if my parent's aren't scheduled to get their taxes done until end of March?

Yeah choosing a lender is tough! So I'm holding off on the promissory note. I would think they'd give us our packages without that?

In terms of the parental info. We could estimate, but eventually have to submit our parents' tax returns. If there are any drastic differences, then they would adjust our packages.

Here's what it says on the website:
Federal Stafford Master Promissory Note (MPN), with choice of lender. (Not required to apply for financial aid, but the Stafford Loan is a standard part of UCSF Financial Aid package and it is recommended to submit the MPN after submitting your application.)

Yeah, I've just been putting it off because of school and work. I'll just send them my parent's old info, nothing has really changed. I'd like to know a tentative offer before deciding.

So I'm back in the USA. PHEW! AND, I just cooked spanokopita. So everyone's happy. I promise I'll cook it at UCSF too, and bring it to class. I don't know if I can make enough for everyone, but at least the people in my corner will be well spinached, cheesed, buttered, and phyllo-ed. I'm exhausted. Going back to bed. But I can NOT wait to meet all you guys. I'm going to go spend Friday at UCSF checking out the classes and the such. I'll update everyone.

As for my boyfriend, we are ecstatic! (Also, because i'm back in the states!). He has a free ticket out to CA this weekend from one of the law schools he got into... k, i'm off. Meet you guys soon!

Glad to hear you got back in the US safely. It's cool that u n your bf get to check out SF. Weather's been nice so I think it'll be great for you guys Friday.

What are you guys going to be doing this summer before school starts? I'm in the midst of planning some trips but I can't make up my mind!

Hey guys, in the itineraries typed above it says there is something planned for Friday, May 4th, but the letter sent to me yesterday doesn't mention anything about Friday. Is the Friday night stuff cancelled?

good question. i got a response to my rsvp to the weekend and all the details start with saturday morning stuff. i hope theres something because i already booked my flight for friday morning

I just sent my rsvp via email. And I got an email response back. Here's what's going on Friday:

"Registration will be between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the Admissions Office on the second floor (room C-200) of the Clinical Sciences Building at 517 Parnassus on Friday, May 4. Current medical students will be there to welcome you and show you around the campus. That evening there will be a special reception for underrepresented in medicine students from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Faculty Alumni House at 745 Parnassus. There will be a panel of speakers, a small group discussion, and then a large group discussion. Dinner will be served."

Sounds like this is optional but maybe contact the office if you're not interested.

Baby is chilling out right now, so I thought I'd drop in and say hello to everyone. Glad you're back safe Peri!

I'm starting to look at places- the rents for 2 bedroom places are... impressive.

I'll see everyone at second look weekend.

so if we are not URM, we don't/can't go to the dinner?

so if we are not URM, we don't/can't go to the dinner?

Good question- I didn't receive any info on the Friday dinner in my letter (although I haven't RSVP'ed yet).

so if we are not URM, we don't/can't go to the dinner?

eh..Just call n ask i suppose... I'm not URM but I did apply to the PRIME-US program 😕

In any case, the weekend will be great! Especially if the weather now will be the same then.🙂

Question: Did everyone get the "apply to PRIME" letter? And, what if you already have an MPH??

I applied to Prime from the get go and actually have phone interviews coming up for it too. In the most updated email I've got from the PRIME, they said that you could fill out a waiver. So already having an MPH, in my opinion, is a good reason to get it waived. But they did change PRIME to a five year program, so I'm not sure what would happen in the extra year. 🙄

Hey all, how are you all looking for off-campus housing? I'm looking at http://www.places4students.com/ but there aren't many listings. I hoping to find a good deal... =) Can't wait to meet you all!

I just enjoy looking at all the beautiful housing in SF. I had a quick question, if you do PRIME, is your tuition the same, or do they provide a partial/full stipend? Looking forward to early May!

Hey guys, i am a first year med student at UCSF. We have an exam next thursday and that might explain why i am playing around on student doctor. I really feel your excitement, concerns and all cos seriously if you are going to live in a place for four years, then you want to be happy there.

Second to say, you guys should be excited about second look cos there are some pretty nice things planned for that weekend.

I know you all have questions and i might not be able to keep up cos i should really stop procastinating about study but................

Anyways, just wanted to say congrats on getting it. Our class of 2010 is such an amazing group of talented, diverse, super amazing peeps. So let's see if the class of 2011 can top that.

I personally dont think so. Haha. Good luck guys and stop worrying cos housing arrangements and all are going to work out just fine.

What do you all think (especially San Fran residents and the current UCSF students who have posted) about on-campus versus off-campus housing? What is the on-campus housing like? Do most first years live on-campus? Pricing differences?

Senor, I'm sorry to hear the pricing for 2 bedrooms is looking.....challenging.... BUT, think of this, from everything I hear, your baby is going to be so lucky to have his childhood in such an amazing city🙂

The on-campus housing isn't bad but it isn't for everyone either. You'd be placed with students from any of the professional schools - medicine, dental, pharmacy, etc. In terms of the quality, it's decent. Rarely do I know of people who share a room so you'd most likely get your own. If you're at Mission Bay, the place is a brand new but more pricey which is the same for off campus housing. The difference could be ~$100 for on vs. off campus.
