as far as football goes, usc has a dominating team, and no one will argue with you on that, but, for basketaball, i take ucla any day!

11 NCAA titles, finals this year - ucla basketball is pretty good.

This is really frustrating. I have given up UCSF and gave my acceptance to Harvard today.

all jokes aside, you just drop $200,000 on loans bro. the avg debt of ucsf grad is 90 thou. harvard? probably close to 300 thou. patience is a virtue. not to mention you have to retake the CA boards if you ever wanted to practice in California...which when calculated in terms of opportunity cost of not working during the time of you preparing for the CA board will be an extra 100,000. so i guess you could've saved $300,000...

Choosing between Harvard and UCSF isn't that ridiculous. My mentor picked UCSF over UCLA and Harvard.

I didn't even apply to Harvard ( to save $ and the inevitable rejection that would soon follow) but honestly, even if I did get into Harvard, I'd rather go to UCSF.

Over and over again, we've heard from the dental community that by the time we graduate, there will probably be a standardized board that will allow us to practice in any state regardless of which state we took the test in.

I am not a CA resident so I pay out of state tuition. Tuition is the same for both schools to me. Harvard's 100% matching rate to specialty is nothing UCSF can compare...

UCSF will be a little cheaper since you can get in state tuition after the first year. No school can compete with harvards matching rates, but I can see how some people get p'ed off when you just throw out your reluctancy to accept harvards offer.

No, I am an international applicant and I dont get in state tuition anywhere, anytime. I have been calling UCSF many times and the whole admission process is pretty disappointing.
If you were me, paying the same to both schools, would you pick UCSF over Harvard?

as someone mentioned you could get in-state tuition after 1-2 years; i'm not sure if that's true though. but still assuming that you have to pay same tuition for both schools, i would....ahh. it's tough. i think i'd still pick ucsf b/c i love CA and SF is really great. Boston is a great place to study as well but I'm not too sure about settling down over there, personally. My friends who are studying over there are thinking about coming back to CA after they're done. I don't really know anyone who have lived in CA and then studied in the east coast wanting to settle over there.

what i'm really excited about ucsf though is that it has a very diverse, unique student population. students from all walks of life, who have lived very interesting lives coming together to study dentistry. friendly, smart, motivated. although it's not a bad thing, harvard definitely wants the "type" of students who can handle the pressure of their great program. when i interviewed there I met some boring ass people who couldn't carry on a conversation. and school's rep's important but in the end it's your classmates that will dictate your experience there. maybe it was just my interview group but yeah they definitely fit the stereotype. harvard also is known for not training very good GPs. i like to keep my options open.

if i was sure about specializing i'd have chosen ucla over harvard in a heartbeat though. ucla also has a great matching rate and you get to live in CA...with a undergrad campus life available to you. but i just like ucsf and the nor cal a bit better.

at harvard you have to write a dissertation/complete a research project as part of requirement of receiving your DMD which so doesn't seem like "fun."

and someone mentioned about boards....they're thinking of unifying western regional board in near future. (not the entire country).

I'm assuming you're not an American citizen? Then you are probably right about not getting in state tuition. If I were in your shoes, I probably would pick SF just because I want to practive in Cali and to do that its best to go to a Cali school. Also, I dont intend to specialize. UCSF has been great so far and I am extremely happy here.

a new week...here we go...

oh god- so complicated- my kind of drama

i hope you guys hear soon. i could understand you frustration against ucsf, but i always hear from the administration that this year is like no other in that there were so many applicants. i think that overwhelmed them.

Yeah, Anna and even Dr. Alexander told me they were swamped and behind all year. Almost 2,000 apps! That's nuts for UCSF.

Good luck everyone!

you'll know when roosters start laying eggs and when people start wearing their underwear on their heads.... 😉

I called the office trying to figure out when we can expect to hear from them. And they said hopefully within a week. At that time, they'll let the applicants know. Doesn't this sound oddly familiar, and with no results? Starting to lose hope...
