hi guys,
i'm relatively new to the sdn forums. i was wondering, does anyone know the grading system of UCSF. is it pass/fail or A-F? are the students really competitive?

I believe it is A-F at UCSF, although UCSD is pass/fail. I can imagine the classes will be rigourous, since UCSF is such a competitive school.

Most of the classes at UCSF operate on the A-B-C-D scale while the electives are graded on a pass/fail basis.

However, it might be interesting to note that there is some discussion about whether it might be good to adopt a pass/fail grading system for the other classes. I highly doubt that this'll ever take effect, though. 🙂

The classes are graded like everyone else said, but as for competitiveness students really try to help each other out. When I was shadowing some friends of mine during class last year I was amazed at how friendly students were, they share notes and study guides for the whole class, and also if a student is failing they try to help that student out so they won't be left behind.

yeah the classes are graded. however, like people have said, there is no real competition and if you're struggling, the school will help you out. i heard that sometimes they find people to tutor you. and they rarely fail anyone. my roommate was a TA for pchem and he told me that they curve the exams a lot so almost no one will fail.

Yup!! And us P1s are forever grateful for the fact that PChem is curved, that the TAs are nice when they grade our exams, and for Will who was an awesome, awesome TA!

I tell you, nobody actually started studying until Will had had his review session! Unfortunately for the class of 2010, I hear that Will has relinquished his TA duties for this coming year. Hopefully I'm wrong, though!

I'm at UCSF and it's interesting to me that UCSD is pass/fail. I think they will be going "grades" in the next few years though.. right? I think for now they are pass/fail b/c some of their courses are taken with the school of Medicine....

Anyhoo, the idea of 'pass/fail' is always some sort of idea that comes up at UCSF very few years, and it gets tossed around and then it dies out. Don't believe it will ever change.

The grading system is fair, and though a few students are REALLY focussed on it, for the most part the feeling isn't cutthroat competitive or anything like that. Some classes are Pass Fail (electives, Health Policy, and a few others) but that is always subject to change depending on what your previous classes give as feedback...

at ucsd, the grading system is honors/pass/fail which some people see as a/b/c "grades" anyways...
