Hi everyone, I just got an e-mail from UCSF for an interview on January 8th and I want to know how good my chances are for admission since I will be interviewed post December! I appreciate to provide me some feedback if you are a student at UCSF or you attended interview earlier...Thanks.

I know this is vague because I can't remember exact numbers, but two different admissions guys at UCSF told me they don't admit a ton of students in december (I think he said around 55, but don't quote me on that), which leaves space for post-december interviewees. If you're interviewing on Jan 8 I think you still have a decent shot.

Hey Asam...I don't want be a bummer, but I think the director of admissions told our interviewing group in October that not too many ppl get in after december. Therefore, you must kick butt on your interview...good luck buddy and I wish you all the best.

It seems that you submitted your app pretty early, correct? (AADSAS on Jun 16th, probably completed secondary in late July or early August?)

Then, I think it's possible that you were not selected after the first screening, but the adcom had to pull out your file again during the second screening. If this is the case, your chance may not be as good as that of others with a pre-december interview. Your "ranking" might not be in the high end.

This is just my opinion, so don't be too disappointed.
GL on your interview! :luck:

Bruinlove, thanks for the feedback...When I was undergrad, I participated in summer session study abroad program. I took courses and performed research, and then I transferred credits to my undergraduate school. UCSF asked me to send my transcripts for summer abroad program to Admission Office and somehow they did not receive my copies first time. I was forced to order them again, and on OCTOBER they did e-mail me and said they have received my transcripts and my file was complete! Anyway, I go to my interview with realistic expectations.

Oh, I got ya. Then, they perhaps screened you just once. Better than what I thought. GL! :luck:

I think you have chances! It is true that there are less seats available post December but also schools invite few number of students post December! You should also take into the account that there could be students who get accepted to UCSF and other CA schools like UCLA or UoP on Dec 1st and they prefer other choices, or non-resident students who decide to go to their state school on Dec 1st because of residency issues. You still have good chances on Jan 8th. Good luck on your interview👍

This is what it's like...

about 270 or something interviews total. I think like

about half pre december and half after december.

about 170 total acceptances are send out TOTAL.

half of those acceptances are pre december and half are after december.

ONE will have virtually have the same chance pre/post dec

I also think they only interview until Mid January and make decision in regards to the second half of the class on or around the Middle of January.

Ps. UCSF doesnt first round, second round people. It's first come, first serve.

I know people with 26s 3.5+ who've gotten rejected and people with 18s 3.0+ who've gotten interviews.

It's a state school people. This school doesnt mess around. They will only invite if they really like you and wouldnt waste your time.

With that said, 5 more days till December 1st. AHHHHHHHHHHHH

I interviewed there a week ago. The admissions people said they will have about 125 pre dec interviews and will send out about 60 acceptances on dec. 1 in hopes of filling half of their class or so.

Then another big chunk will be accepted january 15th after they figure out how many spots they have left. However, people who had pre-dec interviews who did not hear anything on dec. 1st can still be accepted in the second round (Jan 15th).

Thus, people with pre-dec interviews are still gonna take some spots in the second round. Then after january 15th, if they still have some left they'll interview or invite more, but I believe they said its pretty much filled after jan 15th

i agree w/rawknee. half of the 170 total acceptances sent out after dec. 1 are not specifically from post dec. 1 interviews.

i think quite the contrary to what ddslaguy says, one will NOT have the same chance with a post dec. 1 interview. =/

I definitely believe that your chances diminish post December 1st, but as long as you interview before January 15th I believe you still hold a good shot. :xf:

Hey ASAM did you hear back from UCSF? I had an interview on Jan 8th and I wanted to know if they notified anyone yet.

Hey APG44, Not yet. It seems they have given a few on January 14th, but they will send their final round of acceptances on February 2nd or 3rd. I am interested to know how many people declined their offer by January 15th and how many spots available for final round of acceptances. If you remember James said they are about 6 declined their offer and about 25 have not confirmed or declined their offer by January 8th. I guess we just need to be patient and wait till February. Anyway, I submitted my deposit for NYU and if I don't get in to UCSF, then I am heading to NYC. Let's hope we all hear some good news on February.

hey asam, did they say how many acceptances they sent out on the first?
because if 25 didn't respond, and 6 declined by jan 8th, that means that ~ 29 accepted their offers up until the 8th, IF they sent out 60

yeah, your numbers seem correct. thats what i remember.
has anyone called the office and see as of the 16th/17th how many exactly took their 66 offers??

thanks

hey guys,

I interviewed on jan 8th as well. I got a call from the dean on the 14th and received the mail for acceptance today. I believe they offered 12 positions for people who interviewed in december and jan. I also think I remember you ASAM b/c u since you were the only one whose university on predents matches the person i saw in SF.

good luck to you all.

i think he/she means that they handout about 12 more acceptances and are either holding on to the rest till feb or rejecting them.

the ones they're holding on to, they will make a decision on in feb.

ps. does anyone know of anyone who has been rejected from UCSF after an interview in DEC or Jan??

Thanks

so basically 66 were giving out dec 1st, 10 on mid dec, and 12 on the 14th of january. that totaled 88 seats. Early february they will see how many seats left and give those out along with waitlist. am i correct?

xpheene, it was 66 by January 8th, and then they gave out 12 more on January 14th. Since 6 have declined, the total offers made are 72.

hmm not bad. 20 could decline when they find out sf is an expensive city. we all could be roomies and stock up on instant noodles to save money.

Haha, if I'm accepted, it would awesome to find a roommate soon so we could start looking at apartments ASAP.

Does anyone know how many interviewed applicants are still in the running for a spot? (Including or not including those who still haven't been interviewed)

I believe there are 2 more interview dates for UCSF. About 25 ppl are invited for each but some ppl might have canceled... I'd say a little less than 50 more ppl will be interviewed.
I'm not sure how many interviewed applicants UCSF declined so I don't have the numbers for ppl still waiting to here back from them post-interview..

Pssft. No eating instant noodles in this town. 2 blocks away is a mini farmer's market. A 5-10 min bike ride away's a series of asian restaurants and grocery stores. Chicken's 2 dollars per pound. 59 cent avacados. 3 pieces of big-ass dim sum for $1.50. I eat salmon everyday cuz it's kinda cheap. Safeway had a sale on pasta sauce...buy 2 get 3 free. I paid $7 for 5 jars! Man, you get fed in SF on pennies.

SF has the "rep" of being expensive, but it doesn't seem true to me. Honestly, it's actually super cheap to live here. Just be sure to get student housing.

cheapest housing in SF = Hunters point district

You have to be in the know to get good student housing. Parnassus all the way. No living in Mission Bay, Aldea, or Avenue houses. Parnassus alllll the way. Wake up at 7:30, shower, be at class promptly by start at 8:10. None of this getting up at 6:30 nonsense. An hr matters!. Now getting Parnassus's another story. Again, you have to be in the know to get it.

and how exactly would one go about getting "in the know"? 🙂

Exactly what i was wondering! haha.

UCSF2012

Quick question: I thought, based on the housing website, aldea and the avenue housing was a part of the parnassus housing (ie: website says "welcome to the avenue houses at parnassus")

Can you please clarify?? Thx!

Is it hard to find a place to live in SF near the campus? Or is it better to live in mission bay since the price is lower??

Avenue, Aldea, and Mission Bay all at different parts of the city. The Parnassus housing office handles the Avenue (and presumably Aldea) housing. Mission Bay operates the Mission Bay housing. "Avenue" is Parnassus proper. It's what we think of when we say "Parnassus Housing," so named "Avenue" because the street addresses are 3rd or 5th Ave. This is what you want, and you almost have to be in the know to get it because there's high competition. It's also much cheaper than Mission Bay housing, because it includes ALL utilities. (Electricity in a house this size easily runs $500-800/mn. And it's all paid for!)

Avenue -

1) Avenue group house - Everything's included in the cost. Not hard-wired for internet, but I get library wireless. It's really fast.
2) 3rd and Irving - Apt style housing. Brand new building. Kinda small inside. Electricity not included.

Aldea -

For families or couples only. If you want to live with a bud, you'd better lie to housing and tell them you're doing each other.

Mission Bay -

Too far away, but they let you rent out the ENTIRE apt. You can rent out all 4 rooms to an apt, and rent them out to the community at an increased cost. Go to roommates.com and find someone. Considering the quality of the place, key card security, free wireless, etc...they easily rent out. wink, wink...

Mission Bay usually has openings. It's just a pain because it's far away. Severely cramps my style.

Most of the class lives in the vicinity of the school, albeit through private rentals. They all came here relatively early to apartment shop. Some live on 5th ave. Some on 17th. Some on 22nd or 30th (school's btwn 3rd and 4th). Prices are something like $1700 for a one bdrm, 2100 for 2, 2500 for 3. Then add utilities.

Congrats!! I interviewed the same day as you, but I still haven't heard back yet. Hopefully I'll get a phone call soon 🙂

WOW!! CONGRATS!! they are already giving out? i thought they said wait till early feb

Man I interviewed pre dec. Where is the love?

Yea, not feeling the love either. I wonder how many they accepted today and how many spots are left? Would it be wise to call and ask Bob? I'm usually pretty patient about stuff, but this entire cycle is driving me crazy.

Its not a bad idea to call. Bob is nice, too nice.

I think I should stay away from this forum. its killing me!!

Wow, extremely helpful! Thx Buddy.

The information is really great! I have to call the on-campus as soon as possible!!

Hey, guys, great thread you have going here. I have my interview at UCSF this Monday the 26th, so I guess I'm part of the last interview group. I'd be very fortunate to compete for a wait-list spot. You guys have any advice? 🙂

Well, my interview is on the 30th - does that mean I am interviewing on the last possible day??? :scared:

I don't know to be honest, everyone is saying different things. I'm sure UCSF will still interview in February and POSSIBLY March. I could completely be wrong. I mean, it's winding down, and it comes down to who has declined their spot, and who they like. 🙂 Good luck though.

Yes, it has been confirmed that the 30th is the last day that UCSF will interview for this cycle. They should notify all applicants of their status by early February.

I had my interview today, so I am seconding this statement. The 30th is the last interview date, and as of the 26th, 52 of the 88 seats were confirmed to be taken with a $1000 deposit. *Sigh*

Hey DentistSomeday,

Thanks for the information! Hopefully the interview went well. 52/88 is less than I expected, but that still only leaves 36 spots. :xf:
