UCSF Reloaded-- Anyone excited? Part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, I'm a fourth year med student at UCSF and I'm doing my internship out of town and then coming back to UCSF in June 2008 for residency. I have a sweet upscale completely furnished one-bedroom apartment with a great view of the park that I want to sublet for one year while I'm gone (June 13, 2007 - June 12, 2008). Great location; one block from UCSF. Private garage.

I'm advertising it to the general public on craigslist for $1700, but I will give it to a med student for $1635

Email if you're interested and I'll send you more information.

Bump.

Any of you guys in the top half thinking about sending a letter of intent/already sent one? Think it makes a difference at this point?

I don't have any real updates. I called today to check on my paper that was submitted in February, thinking that would be a great update. Apparently they can't get anyone to review it. So I doubt that update is coming anytime soon. Sigh.

Hey there Itrain... this thread is getting a bit lonely, but I still check it frequently.

I presume that the top half of UCSF's waitlist is already ranked (i.e., set in stone), and they will pick students off in order. Writing a letter of intent or providing other updates is most likely not worth the effort. Just my opinion though.

Here is the response I received from a department chief on the admissions board when I asked who to address a letter of intent to (when I found out on was on the HP list, pre- alt list)

"I would address the letter to Dr. Wofsy, BUT, I cannot enthusiastically
recommend doing so at this time. Clearly it is your decision, but from my
understanding of the process, the thing to do at this time is to wait..."

Also, when I spoke to someone in the admissions office about this, she seemed to suggest that they really do not affect things, other than making the applicants feel less helpless.....

But it is SO hard waiting....

Hey guys,

Yeah, I tend to agree about it not mattering that much at this point. Plus I started to write one and it was the lamest letter I've ever written, so I'm happy to have confirmation that I don't have to send it.

So soy sauce, you think it's all set? If so, I feel like they could just tell us. If I'm #49, I could certainly stop stressing and start apartment hunting.

WC, when do you think is the time to send a LOI? Never? 🙄

Hellooo...

Yeah, I think the rankings are all set. My reasoning: (1) They informed ppl of their position on the top half of the waitlist AFTER informing ppl who were placed on the bottom half or rejected. This delay implies they were taking longer to rank ppl on the top half. (2) There have got to be ranked waitlists at all schools for practical reasons (in addition to unranked lists).

I think Hopkins told ppl of their rank last year, but aren't doing so again this year. If UCSF told us our ranking, we would prob call the office everyday to find out how many ppl where still ahead of us. Sure, it would be nice to know if we were #1 or #49, but if we were in the middle it might be more stressful.

Hope this doesn't seem too matter-of-fact. I have nothing better to do with my time... except write a thesis... damn it.

So I actually asked the UCSF office if a letter of intent or update would matter at this point, and she pointedly said no, not at all, we are all ranked (in stone). I know their office has been sorta wishy-washy about everything thus far (esp re: when we would be informed of any important info), but she didn't even hesitate to tell me this one. BLEH

I guess its just time to wait....AGAIN!

This is sooo true. I know my exact rank on another school's waitlist and rather than making it easier, I find myself obsessing about how much movement has happened each day. If they hadn't already "politely" asked us not to call more than once per month, I'd definitely be calling constantly.

yesssss, my favorite banana

so everyone with HP status has heard by now right? has anyone still not heard?

Yes, the impression I got is that UCSF prefers patient waiting to LOIs and updates.

Hello All,

I was just speaking to the director at the financial aid office and he told me had been informed by the admissions office to expect "a lot movement" after May 15. I think that things look good!:luck:

Nice! This makes me feel a little better about spending 40 bucks to submit their finaid app...maybe it will actually get reviewed 😱

Thanks for the update, WC!

Snap! This hearsay has given me way too much hope!

I went for a bike ride with a UCSF-accepted student last night and he is probably going to chose Michigan, which I strongly supported of course 😉

Why the heck would ANYONE choose ANY school over UCSF? I honestly think the only shool worthy of debte vs UCSF is harvard. I didnt always feel like this, UNTIL I truelly saw everything UCSF has to offer.

I believe he feels more supported at Michigan. He said the admissions office was 100 times better than any other and he felt the faculty listen more to the students and they offer more time for extra-curriculars. He also felt more financially supported there and really like the vibes of Ann Arbor.

While I am 110% confident that UCSF is the best school for me, I certainly do not think that means it's the best school for everyone.

wow! what an excellent, hope-inspiring string of good news to come back to!

I probably should withhold the good news for one message a day....but I just remembered that this cyclist friend also mentioned that his host at accepted students weekend got off the alternate list in August. I don't know if that's really good or bad news, but it does show that even if June passes us by, there should still be hope. Though I sure hope I know something by July! :luck:

I have to agree that UMich had the best application process of any school I interacted with this cycle. And I can see how some people might be drawn to it...SF is not exactly your college town. So to each his own... 🙂

As for August, I feel like if you can hold out on the WL till August and a spot does open up, there probably aren't too many others competing with you for it, given that lots of schools have start dates at the beginning of Aug. Let's just hope we aren't all still here on this thread come August! That's the bright side, guys...in a few months we're going to start med school somewhere!

Actually, I think you are ineligible for waitlists once you start orientation, not med school itself. At least, that's what two schools have told me.

Oh, I hadn't heard this distinction made. I better check on orientation start dates before I make a final decision!

If you're serious, then you must really love UCSF... Personally, I wouldn't base such an important decision on (low) probability and speculation.

Wow- I've been out of touch for a while and I'm behind on this thread...

Caribou and ltrain- congrats on the HP and hoping for good news for you two veterans.

So sorry, xtremeangel... hope you land somewhere where you'll be happy.

NDY is still around and dispensing san francisco wisdom and encouragement- that's a true thread friend.

Nolan- even though you refused to marry me, I'm sure we can still be friends. Post pictures of your wedding on facebook.

It was great to meet many of you over second look. I'm sure we'll forget each other's names by September and do it all over again.

I found a place to live and my wife and I are moving in June (our house in Colorado sold, so the pressure was on...)

Can't wait to have a few months of freedom in the city before school.

Hang in there all you waiting listers- there will be some movement I'm sure.

Ha, totally kidding (and fairly decided at this point).

SF, welcome back. Long time...

Haha lol. You never know on SDN! Best wishes regarding your decision and the WL at UCSF.

Does anyone know how many total people were accepted by UCSF last year?

I think the number 245 was mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread, but I don't know the source. Seems plausible, though.

They accepted 257 the year before last, if that helps...

Thanks guys. Looks like an OK shot for the waitlist folks then - even lower half, if they went to 257! Good luck everyone!

Happy May 15th Everyone!!!

May all our may 15th wishes come true.....=)

Yes, here we are. It's hard to believe it's actually here. It seems a little silly to go home and check my mail tonight, but I keep hoping that maybe my phone will ring...

Thanks soy sauce! It saddens me that the world will lose such a fine grammarian to the clutches of science and its plethora of writing faux-pas. Did I pluralize faux-pas correctly? Actually, do you mind diagramming my last declarative sentence? I can't really visualize how the subject and predicate interact right now.

Kudos on the catch, though, really. Don't know what I would have done.

Caribou, you huge nerd.... CONGRATS!!! Welcome to UCSF and can't wait to see you in the fall.

Good luck today everyone--may the USPS be good to you, or better yet, may your cell phone ring with news from Parnassus Ave! :luck::luck::luck:

You're most certainly welcome.

I must admit that I do enjoy a good game of grammar one-upmanship. If I were forced to comment on a stylistic element of your post, I would mention your use of “it” as both an idiom and a possessive personal pronoun… in the same sentence!

Look how much we’re learning already. I can’t wait for medical school. Let’s hope for good news from UCSF this week or next!
