so i got the "high priority" letter from ucsf, with the following excerpt:

"...applicants in High Priority are either offered admission, placed on the alternate list, or informed that their application has been unsuccessful. The number of applicants in the High Priority category that are ultimately offered admission varies each year, but generally ranges between 20% and 30% of the total group. "

so my question is, what do they mean by "the total group"? the high priority people? all people offered acceptance?

also, this doesn't seem like a waitlist so much as a hold list...is there more than one level of hold (did anyone get a "hold" notice that wasn't high priority?)?

I have been wondering the same thing. But I agree with you. It sounds more like a hold list, a we're-not-done-torturing-you-just-yet list. Funny how they make you feel all important by saying you are "high priority" but you're really not any further away from purgatory than you were before.

Drews & Stroke,

The total group is the total number of people placed on the alternate list. I was able to get some really good info out of Valerie when I spoke to her last month. They give outright acceptances to somewhere around 190 applicants. They give out high priority letter to anywhere between 100 and 150 applicants. Statistically (historically), out of the 190 people accepted, usually 100--120 attend. So, 20-40 are pulled from 'alternate list' each year.

When did you get your alternate list letter?

I'm still waiting. It has been around 11 weeks. If I don't hear anything this month, I don't think I'll get an outright acceptance.

Oh well, keep your heads up. I wish you the best of luck!
