I'm still debating between UDM and Minnesota. Some people that aware with Minnesota's program are telling me its a "no brainier" to go to Minnesota, but I need to look at it from a much more critical approach imo. (I was leaning towards UDM)

Factors to consider (imo): Cost/rate of increasing cost, Clinical education, Proximity to home (Toronto), Faulty and Facilities, Available patient pool, Area (which I put light weight on compared to the other factors. I'm not there for sight-seeing)...am i missing anything?

Hey BlackThought! Congratulations on the acceptances!

I would recommend you consider going to UDM based on value and money you save. Detroit might not be the best city to live in for 4 years, but the surrounding areas have potential, but the city is improving which is a plus. Cost of living in Detroit is cheap and when you compare that to Minneapolis (which is frickin amazing). Minnesota is way too expensive and like you said at UDM you receive great clinical exposure and the facilities are top notch (minus the Library which sucks).

One major thing though to consider is whether or not the newly increased Class size at UDM will bother you. If not, UDM is a good choice.

K so here we go:

Cost/rate of increasing cost (Same if OOS)
Clinical education (UDM)
Proximity to home (Depends where you live)
Faulty and Facilities (I would say UDM because its squeaky new, those teeth vending machines actually impressed me and the place just feels more roomy)
Available patient pool (Not sure about MN but obviously Detroit has a huge one)
Area (MN seems like a nicer place but may cost more than living around Detroit so depends if cost of living is included in your assessment of area)

i love my school and my classmates, but for everyone considering UDM, be aware that it is a commuter school and you will need a vehicle. Id say 99% of students commute 20-45 minutes just to get to school and since i live in canada, it is very very difficult to hang out with my classmates outside of classes. also, i thought area wouldn't matter as well, but bear in mind that UDM is a magnificent facility amidst one of the worst areas i've ever seen. it is quite the downer seeing what we see on the way to school / back home especially in these months when its dark when we get to school and dark when we finish. that being said, i don't regret coming here because everything else has been pretty great

also - the faculty is pretty cool but with the expansion of class size, the curriculum has been so compressed and much of it is online and self-taught. i don't mind since i like to work at my own pace and all, but it kind of leaves me wondering where my money's going considering tuition has been jacked up so much this year -_-

Wouldn't the cost be roughly the same if your OOS for Minnesota?

Hey man. How did Dec 3 treat you?

Yea I find myself gravitating towards UDM. As for the class size, I was slightly concerned about it at first, but they split the class into two cohorts, so the lectures, labs and what don't not get hectic. It would be great if a current student can confirm how this works. I think they started doing this for the class that entered September 2012. So knowing that, I'm not too concerned about the class size anymore.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response. Is your year where they split the class into two cohorts? If so, how has that been working out so far?
(The question was answered on another thread)
