UF vs FIU vs FAU
FL resident deciding between these 3, live ~40 minutes from FAU so maybe could live at home and commute??? (not sure how much id want to do this for social reasons), right now interested in ortho but open to changing, want to keep options open for the hyper-competitive specialties in case I want to pursue oneWould not need to take private loans for any of the options
Honestly heavily leaning UF right now, mostly just wanting to see if there are any real arguments not to go there, I am very blessed and grateful to be in this position and thanks for any advice
Is UF ~100k+ more in debt than FAU while living at home and driving 40+ minutes all the time? (I know only I can put a price tag on this but am I crazy for going with the more expensive choice?)
UF (~70k/yr COA)
(pros)
- most "prestige"
- most plentiful research opportunities/funding/faculty by far
- strongest ortho match (12 this year with many going to top programs in a class of 135)
- residency programs + faculty in essentially every specialty
(cons)
- smaller fish in bigger pond when competing for these competitive specialties and research?
- farthest from support system (still just a few hours drive)
- Gainesville
FIU (~80k/yr)
(pros)
- new partnership with Baptist health (lots of new residency programs in the next few years?)
- pretty close to home
- match very well into competitive specialties for a school on the newer side
- heard from many current students that they have not had any issues getting involved in research in their specialty of choice
- I speak Spanish and would get to put this into practice moreso in Miami than my other options
(cons)
- expensive right now, no fin aid/scholarship yet
- no ortho home program
FAU (~72k/yr if rent, ~40k/yr if live at home) really only considering the commuting option
(pros)
- significantly cheaper than other options
- small class size
- CHEAP BECAUSE CAN LIVE AT HOME
(cons)
- live at home until age 27?
- hardest to branch out socially living farther away
- 40 minutes without traffic to get to campus
- clinical sites very very spread out
- newer school with less established research opportunities
- no ortho home program
