UGA's website says that they only received 187 in-state applicants for 76 spots for the class of 2013.

Now I love Atlanta. My long-term boyfriend might move there after graduation and I've been looking for an excuse to tag along (after a year of pre-reqs, of course) and then try to secure a couple electives and more experience to apply to enter vet school in 2012.

Am I reading this wrong or would moving to Georgia give me some pretty good odds of getting into vet school??

Oklahoma had 116 IS applicants for 58 seats - even better odds. Some schools just don't win the popularity contests. Moving to GA would be a perfectly fine plan... if you're 100% sure you'd be happy there (and can jump through whatever hoops required to gain residency, even if it means working full time for a year and filing as an independent on taxes).

Well I've always wanted to live in Atlanta, and I will probably be filing as an independent by then anyway. I think it will mostly depend on finances-- if I can afford to live on my own. I was just shocked because I'm used to seeing thousands of applicants to certain schools and they only have just over 100! Is there any particular reason these schools aren't as popular? (Am I missing some glaring bad-thing?)

Getting to live in Georgia and getting a higher chance of admission to vet-school would be a win-win for me! (I'm in Virginia right now, so my IS would be VA-MD, however I'm not sure I want to spend 6 more years here? But I think I'd be happy to go anywhere, so who knows!)

I dunno - lower funding, location, fewer specific programs.... these are probably all factors. Fewer toys, lower caseload. But, we all learn the same stuff, and I love the professors here (and I love living here) so it just depends on what's important to you personally.

Might as well wait and see how things go, but it sounds like a reasonable plan to me. 🙂

Thanks! There's no way I can be sure of anything yet-- still have a long way to go-- but I'm glad to see this wasn't a typo, hahaha. I'll keep it in the back of my mind (and in the big "pre-vet-stuff" word document I use to procrastinate from my other schoolwork).

Well between OKSU and UGA...the Biology subject GRE? 😉

Ugh you're right, I took the Literature GRE (I don't know maybe I'm a glutton for punishment?) because I did fairly well on my regular GRES. Well I'm an English major and I got an AWFUL score!! It made me afraid of subject tests.

The boy is also talking about moving to LA-- which to me only means Davis in-state! But applying to vet school feels so far away that who knows if we'll have to worry about Bio GREs or cohabitation issues, hahaha. I'm just living in dreamland for now.

i was considering looking up OKSU masters programs i could do while i become an instate resident until you mentioned this. no way im taking another GRE.

True, true. But it actually includes all the things you've learned in your classes (that's right, it's RELEVANT, imagine that!) andddd... the average score on it for IS is a 560. I dunno my score yet, but nyan made like a 750 range. So it's not like... competitive. So, in my mind, no - it's not really that bad aside from the extra $140, and it shouldn't scare applicants away from either school unless they are weenies. :d

higher. 😉

I was just making an idle observation based on the two schools being considered! Personally I like the Bio GRE*. 🙂

*absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I destroyed it...sure...

isn't UGA in Athens? It's only about an hour and a half away from Atlanta, but just thought the university was located in Athens.

Yes, it's in Athens, but I'd probably spend that year-to-gain-residency in Atlanta? Or at the very least I'd get to visit Atlanta way more than I do living in Virginia.

hmm 560 you say? that def seems doable seeing that the ETS says the avg is 650!!

Weese reel speshul here in Okler-homa.

*shrug*

I got a 580 the first time I took it... and while I didn't really study, I think I gave it a fair shot. I dunno.

i have heard of tons of people doing really bad on the subject GREs compared to the grades they get in class. i dont know if its because they didnt study or because it was super hard. standardized tests freak me out though, i hate them!!
I also have really sucky long term memory (unless i keep studying the same subject every month) so i feel like i'll need to brush up a lot on the basics (especially since ive been out of classes for 2 yrs), which will only help me more if i get into vet school... but id rather be studying for vet school than for a test to get me into vet school lol

Tigers are you talkin' s*^t about my school? 😉LOL

So far I love UGA. It has its issues but what school doesnt. I mean I would have loved to have gone to ISU with its big beautiful new school and toys but I also would have paid 3X as much tuition.

YOu couldnt pay me to live in Atlanta though....crime and traffic is one of the worst cities ever. But Athens and the small towns around Athens are totally fine.

And as far as the application:acceptance ratio...it depends on year to year. This year lots of people got off the waiting list, but last year only a couple. THe economy really changed last years applications (we where told). Which doesnt make sense to me since the AVMA projections say this is the best time to be a student bc in 4-5 years alot of the baby boomer practice owners will going into retirement and opening up jobs everywhere.

And an interesting fact here at UGA, this is the first class in like 25 years that has more people heading into large animal/ mixed animal medicine verses small animal...so how awesome is that.

Atlanta can be pretty hit or miss. I lived there during undergrad and loved it. having a car can be tough there, but don't be fooled by their public transportation, its spotty at best. You get used to the traffic - it's almost as if the drivers there just speak a different driving language. Sure they don't use their turn signals, but they tend to veer to that edge of their lane, etc. If you live in the Decatur area, its fairly safe. Don't leave cars unlocked though. If you have any specific questions about it, feel free to PM
