Dear seniors,
I am intending to apply to PH school in Epidemiology, Fall 2011. However, I don't know whether I am possible to apply to public health without the experience in this subject. I got the bachelor degree in Biochemistry and master degree in Molecular cell biology. So all of my experiences are related to molecular and cellular biology. I think that my experience somehow might useful for my education in public health, but I am not sure.

So, my question is that could I apply to master degree/or/and Phd degree in Epidemiology? Is there anyone who had similiar situation? Please give me some advice.

My GRE score is 720Q+430V + 3.5 writing. My TOEFL score is 93 (29R, 22L, 17S, 25 W). With these scores which schools I should apply to? Is there any chance for Emory University for my profile?

I am looking forward for any comment and suggestion!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much!!!!

Hi Sweetie,

I think you could try for the PhD in Epidemiology but I also suggest maybe applying to a few Masters programs for back up. I also suggest applying to a broad range of schools. Emory University is well known for public health so you should definitely apply there.

I had a quick question for you though...Why do you want to do public health instead of a PhD in Molecular Bio?? 😕 This is something that you definitely will want to emphasize, clarify and also convince the admissions committee that public health is an area that you definitely want to pursue.

If you want to do public health education you don't necessarily need to get a PhD in Epidemiology. I would consider volunteering at a clinic which serves some public health function, such as immunizations. It really behooves you to get the experience just so you know what you are getting into

Hi Mez and Temple. Thank you for you reply.
In fact, I want to do job with many going out activities rather than doing experiments (as I guest, doing in immunizations might be related to experiments mostly) so that I want to study for Ms/PhD in Epidemiology and then go out for work with the patients and society! Thank you guys again.

I am just wondering that with my such GRE and TOEFL scores (i'll retake TOEFL soon) and no related experience in PH, which schools would be practical for me (btw, which schools I may have chance to get fund)?
Shoul I contact some professor beforehand?
