I just thought I would post a little something since no one has for a while. Seems like since they revamped the SDN, people haven't used it as much.....maybe just a coincidence. Anyhow, hope your classes are going well......Only about a month to go. I am so tired of undergrad classes, it isn't even funny!!!

Well better go! See you in August!

Chris

I'm thinking of moving out to KC on July 1st, and taking the weeks prior to starting school to get to know the area and meet neighbors, etc.
Does anyone else have moving plans yet? Has anyone looked for house rentals, or is everyone set on the apartment thing?

I think I will be moving around the beginning of August. And, for me, its definitely going to be an apt., probably somewhere in north KC. I drove around that area when I was there for my interview, and it seemed fairly nice. The traffic didn't seem all that bad either. I think I will take another trip sometime during the summer to actually find a place and get the lease taken care of.
If anyone has any specific info on apt. complexes in north KC, I would love to hear. Bennington ridge keeps popping up - but just a quick look through some websites shows many other places that seem quite a bit better for about the same price.

Qafas,

Send me a private message if you're interested in Bennington Ridge.

I think I am going to start looking for places next month. As soon as finals are over, I am going to make a two day trip or so and just drive around the surrounding towns of UHS within about a 20-25 mile radius and check things out. I have to find at least a three bedroom house, since I have six people in the family. I did find some real estate agencies on the net in the feist, so I am going to start giving them a call fairly soon.

I am hoping to move around June or so but might not be until July.

Is anyone planning on working during school? I am going to work all summer and then hopefully not have to work during the year. Just depends on funding!

Chris

Just posting another message.....
I want our message board to look like Western/COMP having 1.5326 million posts!!!!!

Keep them coming!!

Chris

We were falling way down on the SDN list...thought I would bump us to the top again.

Any new thoughts on housing for anyone? I'm going to make a trip in May. I have a big dog & two cats, which is making it very hard to find an apartment.

Here's a wild question...has anyone ever thought of buying a manufactured house? They sell cheap. It seems cheaper than the $700-800 rent (and I could keep my pets.)

See you all soon!!!
Tammy

Tammy--
Good luck on your housing search. Rent out there is insane huh? I have looked into some on the net, and it is unreal. A good website for houses is www.home4rent.com. They update everyday. Currently there are about 30 some houses on the Kansas side and about 10 on the Missouri side; I also have a list of realtors I have obtained if you are interested.
As for my housing situation, mine may have changed a bit. My wife is wanting to stay living where we are now until we get some of our bills paid off. So I might be living with some in-laws in Shawnee. I am not crazy about the idea at all......I will miss my wife and kids so much. But if it is the way it is going to be, I guess I will make due.
The only positive thing would be I would be able to concentrate more on studying, as far as not having as much noise in my area. That is the only bonus, along with not very many bills. So who knows??

By the way, are you still interested in being workout partners?? Just wondering!

Chris

Hello everyone! Just wanted to drop a congratulations to everyone in the class of 2006. I'm so excited to get started. Congratulations to everyone, and does anyone plan on living in Century Towers or am I the only one? Let me know... :D

Hey Chris,
I will check out the website. I'm really not sure at all what I am going to do about housing. Thanks!

Hey, could you e-mail me your address again? I have the insurance info in my office so that I can mail it, but I can't find your address! (I know it is in Clyde...)

I would like to be work-out partners. I need someone who will make me go. I love to work-out, but it's so easy to blow it off for other things. I started going to a gym with my friend, but she goes at 5:30 am, so that didn't last long. (I'm not a morning-person.) Since I quit going with her, I haven't been there in 6 weeks. uugghh! I need to find someone here who goes right after work. If I go home first, I never get back out. (Lazy!!) When we toured UHS, there were people working out in the morning. Maybe on a break? It would be perfect to work out while at school & before going home. Count me in!

Hey guys,

Congrats on the acceptance to UHS. I'm sure you will enjoy getting acclimated to med school life as much as I have!

I didn't have the time to read through all the postings, but just wanted to let you all know that if you have any questions about KC, UHS, med school, etc... you can feel free to email me. I'll include my address at the bottom.

My name is Steve and I'm a first year student. I'm 29 yrs old, married with a 20 mo. old. Oh yeah, I have a 100 lb. black lab to boot. We live on the KS side of the KC area.

This message if for all you that are married or have fiance's or serious boy/girlfrieds that will be comming out with you. In my view, the most important aspect of acclimating to med school is making sure your significant other is supported. Afterall, they will be assuming a large amount of the load of daily life like paying bills, etc.. Be sure that you do EVERYTHING you can to involve them in your medschool life. It seems to the secret to surviving the first year (for atleast the married guys in the class).

One way to do this is to let your significant others know about the SAA. They are a organization made up of mostly wifes and girlfriends (sorry guys!) of students. It is not limited to women only, but the membership just happens to be 100% women. It would scare me away :) My wife is new incoming president of the group and would really enjoy the opportunity to speak with your significant other. Please feel free to forward her email address for correspondence!

Well, If I can do anything to help, just let me know.

We can be contacted at:

Rellik-
Thanks for the advice about the spouse network. My wife and I have been married for almost three years. They have been pretty tough, but I think we are getting better. Before we were married, I emphasized countless numbers of times that I want to be a doctor and it will be tough for a long time. During my first year of pre-recs (Post Bachelors; I decided on med school after I graduated) we fought alot, her saying all I do is work and study; but I re-emphasized everything to her. Eventually she got better.

Now, it appears that we might not be living together during at least the first semester. We have a lot of bills to catch up on, and we currently live in a small town, so her thinking is that she will remain there with our children (4 of them) and get caught up on the bills and then move after the debt is paid off. The main debt is a credit card debt I accumulated during undergrad. So I am not really thrilled on the idea, especially because I will miss her and my kids, but we will do what needs to be done. We live approx 2-2.5 hours away from Kansas City so I can possibly get away for a weekend once in a while.

Just thought I would throw that in. The only positive aspect I could find was that I will have more quiet time to study, which will be nice!!

Activity seems to have nearly died on our little thread lately. Anyway, I would just like to reinterate for the umpteenth time -is anyone looking for a roomate? Pleas contact me by privat message if so.

I know what you mean TAM; I have been trying to post more often, just so that we can try to compete with Western/COMP and all the other bigger threads. Everyone must be buckling down for finals or something. All I have to worry about it to pass genetics with a C. No problem.

Well I will check back later; hope to see your posts!

Chris

Hey everyone,
I wish all of you still in classes the best of luck on all of your finals & those not in school lots of vacation time before we get to KCMO in August!! I was just counting on the calendar-- 15 weeks until orientation begins!! I am so excited to meet all of you! SEE YOU THERE!

~Hillary

PS- I AM planning on living in Century Towers & am also ARMY HPSP-- congrats EUROdocMOM!

I'll be in Century Towers, too. :)
Have you seen the web page for it yet? There are a couple of pics on it.
Century Towers

Does anyone know what's going to be happening during orientation?

Hey Gang!!
Congratulations on being in the UHS Class of 2006. I'm also in the class, and so far, looking forward to every minute of it!! I'm non-trad, 29 years old, and going back to school will be like a breath of fresh air! I'm REALLY looking forward to meeting all of you guys, too!

I'll be living in Century Towers, along with a lot of you. I've got a single (sorry TAM). I like the fact that the apts are brand new. I have questions about the neighborhood...so feel free to send me private email with explicit details. I'll be coming from suburb of Cleveland Ohio.

Again, congrats to everyone....we are the new generation of docs!!

Hi everyone! Just bumping up to the top again.

It looks like my son & I will be living in my car! ha! ha! Actually I need to get up there in a couple of weeks to try to find a place to live. Stephen, a first-year student, recommended Prairie Village for those students with families. The rent is fairly reasonable for a house plus the school district is more desirable as well.

Just thought I would pass that along.

Also, I received information from State Farm about health insurance. You can get a single plan for about $75 per month, which includes physician visits, hospitalization, etc. It does not include prescriptions, but they do have a service where you can get a several month supply for $5, I believe. If anyone needs more information, let me know and I will find the agent's name for you. (It's at home...I'm at work.)

I can't believe the time is almost here to begin. WOW!

See you soon!
Tammy

Just wanted to pop in to say hi to everyone. I haven't posted in a while but have been checking in periodically to see what everyone is up to.

I'm also interested in what the registration and orientation will entail. I'm sure we'll have a lot to take in.

This is my last week of classes and then finals next week. This is my easiest semester so far. I'm actually bored...heaven forbid. Can you believe it?

One other question--are you all going to get stethoscopes and such before starting school?

Hi guys...(Tammy)
I've gotten state farm info also. I just got a big packet from Blue Cross Blue Shield the other day. I'm glad to be getting this info. I haven't decided who I'm going with yet...but I might check out the deal you're talking about, Tammy. As always , there's much to think about!
Ciao!

Hey Anna...
I have questions too. Like here's a stupid one. What kind of notebooks/school supplies do we need? Or do we just get what we feel comfortable with? Does anyone have any advice? Someone in admissions told me that we're supposed to be assigned a buddy. Haven't heard from my buddy yet. I don't think it's too early to start thinking about this stuff...I'd like to buy things while I still have an income! I wonder what books we MUST buy?
Take care, Anna! :)

Hey guys..
Glad to see so many posts!! I have a general idea on the answers to some of your questions:
As far as the books go, I have been in contact with a first year and he said to wait until you get to school and speak with a second year about what books to buy. According to him, he hardly ever uses books....all of the profs have powerpoint presentations and everyone gets a copy of the notes from them. But if you wanna get books, he recommends a review type or board prep book for the various subjects.
He also told me about supplies, as in where to get them. There is a place in Topeka, called Medventure, and this is where he got his supplies (ie stethoscope, otoscope/opthalmoscope, etc). I already have a good steth, since I work in respiratory therapy. I have a Littmann Cardiology III. I got it off the net. If you buy them in a store, they run about 180-200 bucks, but you can search the net and get them for about 120, if you want the type I have. Littmann is the way to go in steths. They do have some others for under $100.

As far as orientation, to my understanding, we have a lot of activities on campus, I would assume to get us acquainted with one another. Also I think we go out into the community and help pick up trash and paint houses and such. I am not sure on this but that is what I understand.

Hope this helps guys. I have already purchased a table for OMM off of ebay. It was normally 600 bucks....got it for 200. Type in massage table in the search if you are interested.

Email me if I can be of any help!! Can't wait to see you all in August!!!!

Chris

Mary (or anyone),
You probably have the same info from State Farm that I do, but if you want me to, I will send you a copy of the brochure they sent me. (They sent several.) Just e-mail me your address. My e-mail is [email protected].

I don't have the rep's name with me at work, but I'll try to remember to post from home tonight with the contact info.

I think it was about $75/mo. for coverage. My COBRA plan through work would be around $300/mo., so I was thrilled with this one. Did BC/BS have good info? I requested information, but I've been playing phone tag with the rep.

Take care everyone!

Has anyone received their financial aid letter yet? If so, approximately how long did it take from the time you sent in your applications until you received your letter? I sent mine off a couple weeks ago. I guess I'm just getting really anxious to get started with med school. It's going to be an exciting time for all of us.

Hi everyone.

The information I received from State Farm about Student Health Insurance came from Nikki Lawson & Kevin Hale. They can be reached at 913-649-8111.

If you are 17-29, the rates vary from $360-770 per year depending on your deductible. For 30-39-year-olds, the rates vary from $560-1110 per year. Without giving you the entire brochure, these are the highlights:

* Choose your own doctors
* Includes:
* Office Visits
* Surgery
* X-ray & Lab
* Semi-private Room & Board
* Emergency Care

Just thought I would share the info. I imagine having health insurance will be a requirement for attending school.

Take care,
Tammy

Dear Tammy,
Thanks for the info! I love the fact that my HI is going to increase by $200 a year next year!

I'm getting more excited to come to UHS every day. I got a late offer from another school and have some deep thinking to do. I won't think too hard, I don't want to burn up any more brains are needed! I'll need them for the next four years and beyond!

I haven't gotten my FA letter yet. I'm not TOO worried, yet. I want things to go as smooth as possible!! Who needs the added stress? The thing that will kill me is that I have had a full time job...$$$ for the last several years. So they probably figure I should have saved $180,000 to go to school.

I want to do my best when I'm there...I'll probably be the class nerd, being older! (Only chronologically, mind you!) This forum is nice, thanks everyone!

Hey everyone--
Man I have only one week of classes left. I have three class periods, then two finals, which neither are comprehensive, and I am home free!! I have my genetics final on the 13th and my Intro to Archaeology final on 16th then finished! yes, I took archaeology just in case med school didn't pan out, I could become a professional digger and excavator :)

August is just around the corner! See you all then!

Chris

Mary,
Congrats on receiving more than one offer. I hope you'll go to UHS because I am 30 and apparently you are close behind! ha! ha!

Chris,
I received an e-mail from Century Towers a couple of days ago. I will try to find it in my deleted files and e-mail it to you. I'm sure it has prices in it.

Everyone,
See you soon!

- Tammy

Tammy--
Wow! I didn't realize you were 30. You hold your age very well. I thought you were younger than me (25).

Talk to you all soon!
Chris

Hmmmmmmmmm.....to be 25 again...... That's alright, Tammy and I are mah-ture! (that's what I'm referred as: a mature student...vs. the "immature" (?) student?)
Congratulations Chris on being DONE!!!! I can't believe August is right around the corner. I have so much to do.

Still haven't heard anything about a "buddy" yet. Maybe it's just a rumor. Besides I have buddies already! (YOU guys!)

Hello all, I've been reading our thread for a while now and it seems that we have a real sense of community goin' on here. I got my acceptance letter a couple of months ago, but I guess I'm kinda shy about introducing myself. But, I feel like I already know some of you from what you've been posting. Excited about the coming school year. Chris, I think I'm looking for a work-out partner also, so perhaps we'll meet up sometime. All right, LATES!

Yeller--
Sounds good.....what type of lifting are you into? Bodybuilding....powerlifting.....? Just curious! I agree with Yeller by him saying we have a community here. Everyone is very open and kind and willing to help anyone out!
We will be with each other for at least the first two years of our medical career, so we might as well get to know each other!

Later

Chris

Congratulations Old Yeller!
This site has been very helpful in getting me pumped up for med school.

Has anyone gotten the book on the first page of SDN called "Becoming a Doctor....building a career as a physician?" If so was it a good book?

Have a great day everyone!

Thanks for the welcome guys! hopefully, more of our class would find their way to this forum. For Chris and his work-out crew, I guess I just lift in order to stay fit. I do use alot of freewights though. Oh, I have another question, I know that the priority deadline for the financial aid was May 1, but I haven't sent out my FAFSA on the web yet. Is this potentially a bad thing? This is my first time applying for financial aid, so I'm kinda clueless. Any information would be great. Thanks!

Chris,
You're sweet! If you thought I was under 25-years-old, you must have thought really bad thoughts about me though since I have a 12-year-old! ha! ha! hhmmm...25-12 = 13! Thank goodness I wasn't that young!!!

Glad you spoke up, Old Yeller. This is a great site. The only bad thing is, I'll probably never call anyone by their correct name! You'll always be Old Yeller to me! ha! ha!

- Tammy

Yeller--
As far as the financial aid goes, I don't know much about it but I think that it may take longer to get your award letter since it is after the deadline. I do not know this for a fact, but that is my assumption.
I would just call UHS and ask financial aid. They would be the best source. I would probably get the FAFSA done as soon as possible!!

August gets closer every day! Only 102 days left till the first day of orientation!!

Chris

Here are a couple of good books to read before med school......
1. House of God--very good book
2. Learning to Play God
3. Intern Blues

I saw a few posts back someone asked about reading a book. These are a few that I have read, that I would recommend. Very interesting....kind of gives us a perspective, although most of them are at least 20 years old

Chris

Here's a good one, Chris,
"Touch of Life" by Robert Fulford, DO.

Congratulations to UHS Class of 2006!

I haven't been admitted to UHS... yet (?being optimistic =P), but was looking for some advice from UHS-ers... I recently interviewed at the school and absolutely, positively LOVED it! I just received notification that I am being considered an alternate and just wanted to see if anyone had some advice/words of wisdom for me... (Old Yeller, Thank you... I will work on a letter of intent!) Hmmm... I guess kind of specifically I'm wondering if ANYONE knows of ANYONE on the alternate list for UHS and... was ANYONE admitted to UHS from the alternate list? and, any other thoughts would be appreciated also... =)

Thank you kindly...

Good luck, PCS. Hope to see you in August!

I got an insurance question for all you UHS'ers:
Is there a separate form to fill out for financial aid to allow us to get extra money for insurance, and did I read this correctly, we are allotted up to $125/month for insurance? I was just wondering.....I have been checking out various plans, and I need to know if I need to fill out any extra paperwork.

Thanks!!

Chris

Our thread is getting bigger......look out Western!! :)

Are there any Arkansas residents that applied for the Arkansas Health Education Grant? If so, have you heard anything from UHS yet?

Hey everyone! I just got my acceptance letter to UHS on Friday :D . I am so pumped, now I can quit wondering what I will be doing in the fall. I am going to call UHS and get to work on my financial aid ASAP! I hope it isn't too late. I look forward to seeing you all in the fall. By the way, has anyone else gotten accepted that interviewed on April 26th?

Congrats NatureBoy!!! Hope to see ya in class!

Dear natureboy,

CONGRATS~~ Isn't that a great feeling! Keep in touch & we'll all see you in August!

Dear pcs,

Keep your chin up-- we'd love to see you in August too!

~drhillary

Hey UHSers (& potential UHSers),

Have you guys checked out the "Medschool Booyeah" t-shirt???
If you haven't, here's the link: web page

I think it would be cool if those of us from SDN had these shirts & wore them at some point during orientation (maybe with our 'real names' & SDN names on our nametags)?? It's just an idea, so let me know what you guys think....
:D :D

~drhillary

OK...dumb question.

What does Booyah mean?
