how late will everyone be at Jak's? I won't be able to come until like 8:30 or 9... I hope there will still be people around. I'm bringing a couple friends too, hope that is okay.

see ya later!

My guess is that most people will show between 8-9pm, so I think you're fine. I'm thinking 8:30-9pm myself.

As for identifying people, we should have had some cheesy signal, like wearing a scarf or something. Ah well, guess there will be lots of people walking around saying "UIC?" "SDN?" Or peering at each other critically trying to decide if they look like a typical enough pre-med to figure out. 🙄

 Nice!

Btw, any chance you could fix the broken banana in your sig? I really feel for him.

What's with you folks trying to be "fashionably" late? The thing starts at 7. I'm not waiting around 90 minutes to meet you all. :d

Dude, I was there, from 6:50 till 8:05 I asked if anyone from studentdoctor or uic medical school had come in, but they said no one had come in yet. I sat in the bar area. after my second beer, I got sick of sitting there by myself and I left. I'm back home in Warrenville now, it's 9pm. O well, I guess. Hope everyone had fun 🙄

Edit: Now I'm reading all the "fashionably late" stuff, I was at the auto show all day and didn't have access to a computer, o well.

Guy's I'm on my iPhone and I'm posting, sitting here at Jaks Tap. Anyone gonna be here? Post soon if u can come!!!!

I was there facing the door in a black and blue SDN jacket. We were there from 7-8:15pm. I wandered through the GIANT crowd that came in and finally gave up. I had told the hostess we were there for the UIC college of medicine.

Tried their beer sampler pack. Gross.

hey... so i just got back from jak's tap. i went at 8:30 and asked pretty much every big group if they were from SDN...lol. thank goodness i brought my 2 friends and had some food.

i was really looking fwd to meeting everyone though. perhaps we can re-schedule where we have a reservation at a restaurant or something. i felt kinda crazy talking to random people to see if they were from SDN
🙁

haha I'm still at Jaks tap and I met this girl who'll be applying to uic next year. Score! Haha guy's let's organize something for next week so it actually works

Wow. I was right. We all needed to be wearing something really obvious. But truth be told, I didn't actually make it - I called zip when I was on my way and learned no one showed and he was leaving, so.... Perhaps next time.

Let's shoot for two weeks from now -- give everyone some time to plan. I'll come up with some signal (i.e., a giant "SDN right here, dammit" poster). 🙂

Ya'll suck jk.. You guys.. didn't try hard enough.. I was there at 7 and no one wandered up to us (we were not in a big group, just a group of two).. and we met up with people from SDN you should have tried harder!!!!

hey guys, i was totally one of the lame ones who intended to come but didn't. family dinner went long. i was kinda sad thinking of you all bonding, so i'm glad there will be more opportunities to meet up.
we're going to be doctors, people, let's get our act together for next time and make it happen!!

When does the committee meet this month?

Hi- this is my first time posting on SDN though I've been a fan since last year. I have my UIC interview next Monday and I still haven't gotten an interview day itinerary from the admissions office. For those of you who've interviewed there, or are just more familiar with the area, what are your recommendations for transportation & lodging? I'm flying in from PA to O'Hare airport, and I've tentatively booked a hotel that's a couple miles away from the school. I hear that the neighborhood isn't very safe, and this being my first visit to Chicago since I was a kid, everything completely foreign to me. Any suggestions of 1) how to best get from the airport to the school? 2) any current student hosts available 3) any on-campus student stayover places?

Thanks a lot. I read about everyone's attempt to meet up this past weekend- perhaps it'll work out better next weekend? If so, count me in!

lol I was there, and met up with a few SDNers :-D lol i was so gone by the end of the night. I wish more people came.

1. Take the blue line from O'Hare and take it to Illinois Medical District/Damen. (~1 hour or so). It's $2 and will drop you off maybe 4 blocks from campus. A cab will be about $35ish from the airport to the COM's front door.

2. Not sure, call admissions. 🙂

3. See #2. There's also the PA Couch Sharing thread. I know there are a bunch of folks who'd be willing to put you up for the night.

Good luck!

That sounds good. Saturday March 1st at Jak's again? The bartender said it's usually pretty low key in there on Sat nights, and I liked that I could find parking on the streets at 7pm. The signal's a good idea, I was thinking about bringing a sign or something. We could meet in the bar area, too.

maybe a good way to do it is make a reservation for like 10 people or something. That way, as soon as we walk in, we can say SDN and they will direct us to the right table.

another thing to consider...in two weeks, its Unofficial st patty's day at U of I...I'll proally be going there and maybe others too? Maybe we should all party it up at U of I? 🙂

I love you guys and all, but I'm not driving to Champaign for you. :d Not yet, anyway. :meanie:

Thanks zipmedic! I appreciate your help!

I can't promise I'll be there the 1st, but will try my best to get there and hopefully even with small numbers it was fun.

And yeah, driving to Champagne, almost died three times on the way down this winter ... so yeah haha no....
😀

So, is it set then? Sat March 1st back at Jak's?

Does anyone know if the admissions ppl are meeting this Thursday Feb 21st?

For those that were accepted to the UPR track and wanted the Chicago track, have you guys written your letter to the dean requesting to transfer and does it matter when you write the letter? I haven't written my request letter yet and I figured it shouldn't make a difference since they don't look at it until after May 15. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Hey Everyone,

First, Congratulations to everyone who received those lovely fat envelopes!

I've been lurking in this thread for a few months but have been too petrified to post anything useful. Now i have a question that's been bugging me.

If we have an interview in late April (like literally the end of April), are we basically interviewing for a waitlist/alternate spot?

Thanks, and i continue to send out good vibes to all those who are still in waiting.

Out of curiosity...For those that will be appealing to get the Chicago campus, what are some of the reasons you will be giving in your letter?

Anyone have any input? If I get accepted (hopefully I get a change on my status page this Friday) I plan on writing an appeal letter and want to make sure it's good.

this was probably answered before, but just curious... on my uic status page it has a bunch of interview days and stuff, but it doesn't let me click on anything... are we supposed to call the school and schedule the interview over the phone?? Thanks😀

Yep, their online status page isn't advanced enough to let you selected an interview date/time online. Call them up and pick your date -- congrats on the interview!

can someone point me to the UIC urban medicine thread?

okay so these may seem like stupid questions😱, but i tried searching for this online and i was kinda confused... okay so i know there are 4 campuses for UIC, so do we do all 4 years at the same campus, cuz someone was telling me that for the first 2 years, everyone is together in chicago and then for the next 2 years, they go to their respective campuses, but i couldnt find anything about that online... so yea😕
second question: has most of the campus already been filled? i just got an interview invite, but its most likely going to be at the end of march, so is that for the waitlist, or for the actual class?
thanks!!!🙂

As far as campuses go, Chicago students do all four years in Chicago, MD/PhD students do all their years in Champaign, and UPR students do their first year in Champaign, and years 2-4 in either Peoria or Rockford. I'm pretty sure there are a few PhD slots in Chicago now, too.

I'm not too sure about how many spots are left in the class, though. I know they overbooked last year and there are 304 students currently in the class, and I think I remember the dean at Rockford telling us last year they started with around 310 matriculants. Dont hold me to those numbers, though.

Hey guys,
Anyone know what our UIN# is, the one they ask for on the immunization forms? It says the number is in our admissions letter, but I don't see one. I'll turn it in with my SS #, but wanted to see if anyone has an answer first?
Thanks!

There are actually two different MD/PhD programs within the University of Illinois. The one at Champaign is larger, but seems to have a slightly different structure than most combined degree programs. The program on the Chicago campus just got NIH funded and is a MSTP. MSTP students in the program at the Chicago campus spend all 8 years in Chicago.

I mean is there an UIC urban medicine thread in studentdoctor?

And I was wondering should I turn in the urban medicine application now or should I wait until I find out whether I am accepted/waitlisted/rejected?

I've forgotten this but can't find it on the website: what is the grading system at UIC? Thanks!

As I prepare for my interview (Chicago) are there any specific topics interviewers at UIC like to be questioned about?
Is there anything that I should be sure to ask questions about?
I'm grateful for any ideas.

Also, just to double check, what parts of your app do the interviewers have access to?

Thanks! I'll probably be asking a few more questions.

Read up on healthcare policies, and be familiar with the candidates policies for healthcare. Know some recent medical inventions, know your essays in and out - amcas and uic essays and ec's that you listed on amcas; know a few things about ethics...search SDN for ethics questions, and you'll find a ton.

Also look up the interview feedback section on SDN...that has PLENTY of info about what Qs they ask at UIC.

What parts do the have access to? ---> personal statement, Extracurriculars, UIC essays, thats it.
goodluck!!

I thought all of the interviews were closed file?
