Site assignment is based on student preference and the goals of the school. If you read your preference card, this is exactly what it says. One of the "goals of the school" is to have a "diverse" student body at each site. When I say diverse, I mean diverse solely in terms of color. Last year, two current students interviewed on the second to last interview date, and both were assigned to Chicago. I'm 99% certain that they were assigned to Chicago because they were black, and Chicago didn't have enough black students to meet their quota. For those of you who are already accepted in January and are upset with your site assignment, I applaud you for sacrificing your spot in Chicago to a URM applicant who won't be interviewed until May or so. In order for society to have a more diverse pool of doctors, some of us have to make sacrifices. If you don't like this, then perhaps you should vote Republican so that America gets rid of affirmative action, and returns to a meritocracy.
 
^^ I am definitley not racist, and I did attend UIC as an undergrad.. but honestly, I think quotas are BS. Quotas ENFORCE racism. Affirmitive Action enforces racism. Put everyone on an EVEN playing ground and then finally racism will end.

i agree, but then there are some who will argue that disadvantaged students didnt have the privileges that other students had...i the way i see it, you make your opportunities, they dont just come to you...you earn it, but many people are lazy and feel that are owed something, in this case lower standards for admission to medical school

I mean, i understand the lack of privileges.. but there are tons of URMs that have had much better advantages than I have ever had, and I think its unfair that just because im white people THINK ive had all the advantages, when I haven't.. so yes, i agree that you make your own opportunitues, no matter your background.

😕 Correct me if i'm wrong, but we've had a Republican in office for the past eight years...and affirmative action is still in place...

also, i'm putting my money on that 1% of uncertainty. of the four campuses, you'd think there would be more minorities at Chicago compared to any of the other three locations. When I was in Peoria looking at previous class pictures, there were only a couple minorities there in the past few years. Given your reasoning you'd think the admissions office would be shuttling them all to Peoria and Rockford if their aim was to diversify each campus.
 
1. If you know anything about politics, then you certainly know that the vast majority of Republicans despise affirmative action, and I suppose this is part of the reason why black people have a cult like following of the Democratic party.

2. I am stating facts. If I had to, I would be able to name the two black students who interviewed at the very end of the season, and still ended up in Chicago. There are plenty of students who were accepted in January or earlier who would have been more than willing to alter their plans the day before school started and enroll in Chicago if they were allowed. Since this is the case, how else can you explain the enrollment of the two black students in Chicago who interviewed at the very end of the season other than by arguing that UIC was attempting to meet its quotas? Why else would UIC vaguely explain site assignments by saying that it was based on student preference and "college goals?" Considering how much they lower their academic standards for URMs, this seems perfectly reasonable to me.

3. I'm not trying to bash UIC. Almost every medical school practices similar discriminatory policies against whites and asians.

re: 1) you said "vote Republican so that America gets rid of affirmative action". and i responded by bringing to your attention that America did that the past two election cycles and affirmative action is still in place. dont know what else your talking about. i thought my answer was pretty clear.

re: 2) your talking about general quotas now and not the reason for students being placed at different sites? because that was what I responded to.

re: 3) are you a current a UIC med student? if so, mind telling us what campus?
 
Affirmative action was created as a temporary fix for disparities in school funding. Schools are paid for by property taxes. Rich people=bigger houses=more tax $/family=more $/kid at the school.

The idea was that affirmative action would give those previously screwed by the system a fitting chance. The real solution is to end the desparities that exist in public schooling then there would be no need for affirmative action. This wont happen because rich people don't want to give their money to other people. And the wealthly control our government.

Instead of checking a box saying 'I am a minority' students applying under affirmative action should have to submit something showing that they have come from a disadvantaged background and their school is constantly underpreforming. Non-minorities should be able to do this to. There are white people who too get screwed by the system, but get no helping hand. Also, there are minorities who went to great schools. Why should someone who went ot the same public schools as I did get special treatment and I do not? We had the same education?

I think everyone will agree that affirmative action can go once there is an equal way of funding schools.

I know my advice is unsolicited (so feel free to ignore), but looking at your MDApps, you're a perfect candidate for a post-bacc program. Enroll in one and kick ass in it to show you can compete with a med curriculum. To be honest, your scores and MCAT are too low to compete allopathically otherwise. Good luck :luck:.

Edit: though I also see you're applying to osteopathic schools, which might work as well.
 
^^Thanks, yeah if I dont get in this year (either to allo or osteo) I'll do a post-bacc program.. I know Im to low for allo, which is why I only applied to five.. just in case, you know?
 
well i guess its refreshing to hear that campus assignment is not based solely on the by which preference card were turned in....but from what i see the vagueness of assigning campuses seems to be bad for Asians too? does that include Indian? god what am i saying...of course it does.....i guess now i have to figure out how to write an amazing letter to uic convincing them that i need to be in the Chicago campus...🙁

I don't know if there's grad housing, but you've got to figure with all the student apartments in Champaign and general cost-of-living in Rockford Peoria, non-student apartments will be just as inexpensive.

From my Rockford interview last year they said that yes, Chicago transfer stories do exist (they seemed to indicate they happened after M1, though I have no idea if they also occur after M2). Basically they said give transferring to Chicago a try, but start to think seriously and happily about the idea of the Rockford track.
 
Yea rockford is actually a fairly good location, historically its known to have the best match lists out of all the other campuses
 
i retract my statement...there seems to be a much larger variety of specialties on the match lists for Chicago.....but i guess its ultimately Dependant on how well you do in medschool...and your step exams

Well, also, high score doesn't always mean you going to something higly competitive. If you admit a lot of people who's life ambition is to do peds and family medicine, even if they had scores that would get them into derm, your match list isn't going to look as "impressive".

I think by the fact that you see very competitive matches on every list: Derm, ENT, Ortho, Uro, etc. I think you can do well wherever you go.

Agreed that you'll probably be happy wherever you go. Speaking with a lot of MS1 friends this year, I've also found that a lot of med students hang out a bunch with each other anyway, so I don't know that you'd miss out on a ton of social opportunities at a non-Chicago campus.
 
Just to add my own UIC story to the mix after viewing these forums for quite some time.


In state resident, NU undergrad, Loyola grad. Interviewed at UIC on 11/27, received admissions packet on 12/24, hand delivered site assignment on 1/2, received Urbana-Rockford track on 1/7. In the process of appealing track assignment.
 
Does anyone know historically how well in-state interviewees fair in gaining admission with interview dates, say, mid-March? I was complete Sept.25th and am interviewing March 12th – top choice, UPR is fine… my guess is that the class will be about 75-80% full – but maybe someone knows better than I do. Hopefully it won't be the case where I'm interviewing for a waitlist spot. Thanks in advance!
 
i'm not sure if anyone would know...may be a current uic student may be?...but how many acceptances do people suspect have been handed out? I know they hand out like 600+ acceptances....can anyone shed light? and people who are arleady accepted...how do you think you did on your interview..i only ask because my interview is on friday and i'm not sure how to gauge my performance after i'm done...any help is appreciated! btw anyone interviewing at chicago coming friday?
 
I also have a question- no answers unfortunately. I have an interview coming up at Rockford, and I was wondering what the interview format was for that location. I know it's three one-on-one interviews at the Chicago campus, but on this interview database thing no one is saying which campus they're interviewing at. Thanks!

When I interviewed there, it was a 3-on-1 30 min interview. Two faculty members and one medical student went aruond the table and each asked me a question. Pretty laid back but hard to get the conversation flowing

I don't think you'll be interviewing for a waitlist spot (I am absolutely certain that they will tell you you're not whether it's true or not) but I do think the class will have a high, high percentage filled by then. It is certainly more difficult to gain acceptance in March than in October. However, it is what it is--your interview is in March and nothing can change that--so do the best you can and maybe you'll be accepted. If not, reapply, get your application in early and call every Thursday to follow-up on your application's review.

anyone hear anything about whether or not the committee meets tomorrow? Im getting really nervous..ive been waiting for a month alreadyyy

Also, how long after the committee meets will the status change on the website?
 
You can find the answer to your 2nd question in previous posts on this thread. I think it's normally the Friday after they meet that you get the message.

As for when they're meeting this month, keep us updated if you get a change in status. I'll tell you Friday what they said at our interview date. For my sake, I'm hoping that because there's 5 Thursdays in January, the meeting will be on the 24th.
 
at my interview (1/9) Dean Girotti said they were meeting the 3rd week this month, but he couldn't remember the exact date. So, I guess tomorrow is the day... but I kind of hope its next week, so that I can update them with a new transcript. My fall grades still haven't updated on my online transcript yet! grrr.

Anyways, good luck everyone!

ok, so now i'm freaking out now too 🙁... i sent an email to one of the admissions counselors today to see if i'd be able to update with my new transcript for this month's adcom meeting, and she e-mails back and says my application has already been reviewed! i also checked my status online and it says decision pending.

has anyone who interviewed in early january had a status change?

i'm really hoping that the status changes haven't occurred yet, otherwise i'll be waiting until next month's meeting! btw, girotti also told us that no one would get rejected post-interview yet. we would have either an acceptance or hold for review until the next adcom mtg. Girotti also said that so far all of the acceptance offers have been accepted which is unusual and skews the numbers for campus assignments. My guess is that they're at around 200-300 acceptances. Finally, for those who are still hoping for Chicago, one of the med students I talked to said their interview was in April and still got Chicago.

NdFrSpd and others, good luck on your interview Friday! Try not to get stressed about the adcom mtg deal and focus on interviews. You'll do great! Best of luck!

Thanks for keeping us updated and thank you for the luck. I did want to ask, how approachable has Girotti been? I know him from setting up seminars, I just don't want to keep asking questions though as its probably becoming redudant at this point and I don't want to screw up the seminar planned this seminar by saying something stupid.

Funny thing, I spoke to another medical student, he also said he got into chicago in april, wonder if we spoke to the same person.
 
what classes did you guys use to fulfill your extra behavioral/social science? I'm hoping that they'll accept an economics class...

I think this indicates that the adcom meeting is today. I hope I'm wrong. Don't worry--it's not like the admissions decisions are updated in Real Time on the status page as the committee meets. Usually the change happens tomorrow sometime in the late morning or early afternoon. I wouldn't start to think you'll be deferred until people post on here that they've been accepted and your status remains "decision pending."

I find it kind of silly that they're meeting on the 17th of January, considering that's barely halfway through the month. But oh well. 🙁

Well ... 'cause you asked, I listed my Educational Psychology class, Special Education class (when I got my MA in Education to become a teacher) and then a random History class that had a lot to do with Sociology (although NOT listed in the Sociology Department) and included course descriptions for all three of these.

I haven't heard anything from them saying that these courses aren't adequate. Should I assume that they accepted them as meeting their requirements??

Having to take additional classes before I enter med school might seriously influence on where I decide to go....

Girotti seemed pretty nice/approachable to me. He was pretty friendly and attentive to making sure he answered our questions. The med student I talked to was a girl, so it seems like getting Chicago (w/out a petition) later on is not uncommon?

I haven't dared to check my status page today... I'm so nervous about the decisions!:scared:
