I am fortunate to get into the University of Kentucky, Wake Forest, and Washington State University (and I’m waiting on UW)I am a WA resident who is hoping to go to a competitive residency.

I am concerned about the potential to have to relocate through the state (or several states for UW) given that I have two young children.

WSU has the cheapest tuition, but again, the possibility of relocation throughout medical school sounds very scary with a full family. Also, WSU is a newer school and has very few associated residency programs.

UK would be great because it’s about an hour and a half away from my husbands family, so we would have support there too. I also heard they do well with students matching into competitive specialties. Of course the tuition will be more expensive here with it being out of state for me though.

WFU has great match rates and is known to have a good amount of students match into competitive specialties which is a draw for me. The students also seem to really love the school and it sounds like a great environment. The tuition here would also be more expensive than WSU.

Please help!!

Don't make this decision based primarily on finances. Go where you'll be the happiest.

Try to go for a tour of each school (if possible) to get a feel for what it would be like. Talk w/medical students, residents, and esp. residents in the specialty/specialties that you're interested in. Try to get to know the attendings too, if you can. A lot of times, the medical students have inside information about what the day-to-day life at a particular school really is like. Ask about things like tutoring services, housing, rotations, etc. Try to make a plan so that you come prepared.

Hope that this helped!
