Hi.

So I was just wondering what people who took the UKCAT thought of it. I heard it was more of an IQ/aptitude test then anything like the MCATs. Also, is/can there be anyway to prepare for it. Thanks. 🙂

I would say that the ukcat is MUCH easier than the MCAT, at least it was for me. I studied for it for about 3 hours a day for a month and that was sufficient. It has 4 sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning (finding patterns is groups), and decision analysis (decoding messages). I think the first 2 sections I mentioned are pretty straight forward but I found there was major time pressure. I found that practicing really helped improve my mark for the latter two sections. I would recommend studying by finding free practice questions on the internet. I also bought some practice questions from one of the ukcat practice sites, if you feel like you need more practice.

The point of the UKCAT is more to see how you think, not what you have already memorised. You shouldn't need to study for it, do a few practice questions so you know what to expect but that's it.

I totally agree that there is no memorizing involved in the ukcat, but that does not mean that one does not need to study. I found practice to be very important. If someone really wants to do well on it, I wouldn’t tell him not to study. It’s great if you were able to do well on it with minimal studying, but everyone is different and has different skills prior to taking the test. You may have been skilled at answering IQ type questions (whether or not you had done them before). But for those who don’t have that ability from the get-go, a lot of practice is invaluable. I can say from personal experience that my scores on the AR and DA improved dramatically after having studied/prepared for one month. If you are like me and have not done many of these IQ type questions in the past, it takes a while to train your mind to be able to answer these questions quickly and properly.
