Maryland should do alot more to help students find housing. During my interview there noone gave any decent information about housing.
But i'll try. I lived all over Baltimore city as an undergrad. Where to begin?
Outside the City: For some strange reason many Dental/Med students live in Owens Mills wich is a suburb north of the city. It is at the end of the Metro rail. The metro ride is around 30 minutes(according to a student). Many do it. Most are out-of-staters from Utah(Utah peeps, nicest people I ever met). They say there is a bunch of students, enough to fill an entire car. Owens mill is outside the beltway that surrounds the city, and I always considered it far away. But, you have access to all the comforts of suburbia: Malls, PARKING, stores, relatively safe..
ANother SUburban area to look into is Catonsville. University of MD has an undergrad campus there. Plenty of apartments, and you can use the campus facilities. It is close to interstate 95 and dowtown B-more is a quick commute(if no cars and you catch all lights it would be 5-10 minutes)
In the city: Having lived in Baltimore for many years I consider the area around the school fairly safe although you still need to be smart. The Med school/law school/pharm/dental/nursing/other grad schools are all in the same area so there are plenty of people around. There are a few dark alleys, but what are you doing there anyway!?
Where to live: Rents vary. Around the Harbor and school rents will be more expensive. Its hard to explain some neighborhoods. If you find a place in say Canton(east of the harbor,30 minute walk) you are in the middle of the Young professional crowd, lots of restauraunts and night life, but as you reach the outer limits of Canton things aren't so shiney. Alot of realtors will try and squeeze their properties under "Canton" locations but are not. WIth that disclaimer places to check out are
Canton, Federal Hill(south of harbor, much like Canton)
Fells point(night life central,dirty,noisey)
Charles Village, Bolton Hill, Mt Vernon. North of campus near college of art and Johns Hopkins Undergrad there are cheaper places to live, lots of college students, quick bus ride, maybe too far to walk, parking is pain in the A$$, but nice neighborhoods(trees, parks, Museums, house parties) not as safe as suburbs. car will likely be broken into once.
These places are not frightening to live, but you still need to be smart. Lots of young folks in Charles Village due to cheaper rent.
There are other places to live, but you would need some experienced guidence. Your best bet would be to live in University apartments or Owens Mills the first year then once you know more find an apartment that suits you. Try and contact some current students.
I hope I did not confuse you more. If i was going to U of MD i would likely live in Canton, Fells point, or Federal Hill. IF I was was living in Bmore for no reason I would live in Charles Village or Bolton Hill.
