Hi,
I have lived in baltimore for 6 years now both for school and for work. I know baltimore. My car, house have been broken into before and I have also been to jail in baltimore (Halloween is crazy at Fells). Throughout my experience, I have learned baltimore isnt a friendly place but you learn to master it. I would also recommend living at Charles Village, where I have been living for the past 6 years. I highly do not recommend the area near the school even tho there are some OK housing. That area is sketchy at night (ie prostitutes and bums that get angry at you for change.)
Charles village is safer. The most dangerous things out there are drunk hopkins freshman girls. I know.
Charles village apt are:
The Carlyle
Broadview
Hopkins House
Marylander (standard fair market price rent)
Jefferson (same as MDer)
Wyman Towers
Charles and Blackstone (must show up on April 1st to try to get an Apt, prolly lowest price in area)

From Charles village you're gonna need a car or figure out the MTA (ive never taken it)
I interviewed at UMD, but havent heard back, but I would like to go there. Anyone know their admission status is?
Let me know if anyone wants to know more about the area. i know current rent prices and purchase prices.
peace

Thanks for the advice...

Does the school hook you up with roomates? or do we have to find our own?

Hey hammer just had a quick question about rent around b'more. What would you consider "fair" rent for a studio/1bed/2bed apt. first within 3 or so blocks of the school, then a small commute away. I see a whole range of prices and since I'm coming from Florida and never lived in a city I don't know what the competitive ones are.
Also, I have a car but I bought a motorcycle a year and a half ago to get around school. Is there such a thing as riding crotch rockets downtown? I figure ice would probably be the biggest hazard during winter time. Basically I'm asking if it's practical to look for a place a litte farther out and commute with the bike vs. getting a place downtown and walking (which is what I was leaning towards originally)

In terms of applying for aid, you should do that ASAP...As you receive your info from your accountant (W2's etc...) you can update your file with fasfa. Tuition will be due, I believe, on the first day of classes. If you are going with <a href="http://get-faster.com?go=loans" onmouseover="window.status = 'goto: loans';return 1" onmouseout="window.status=''">loans</a>, this will be settled through them. I.E. They cut a check to the school directly, and then you receive any portion left over through Maryland.
Classes begin at the end of August, possibly the 3rd week. And in terms of moving there, I am heading down in April to get a place and moving in for May 1st.

Anyone interview at UMD a while ago and still not hear, but got a little mailer from the UMB financial aid office telling you to log onto SURFS-to check the status of financial aid and whatnot. Anyway, I'm thoroughly confused b/c I interviewed 1/19 and have yet to hear anything (rejection/acceptance) by mail, email, phone or infosource(says invited to interview). I filled out a FAFSA so maybe getting this mailer is completely unrelated to getting an acceptance, but it seems strange. When I logged onto UMD's SURFS(www.simsweb.umaryland.edu) I have an account which confuses me even more, why am I anywere in UMaryland's system. I called, and they told me their still looking at my app so its pending or whatever thats supposed to mean. Anyone in the same boat or can explain this?

Hurley,
If you're looking for an apts with in 3 block distance, u may need to live on campus(I think they have a little bit of that) or live in row houses that have been divided into rooms. The rent prices may vary significantly depending on condition.
Studios are tough to find
1 Bedroom - $700+/-100
2 Bedroom - $1000-1300

Out in Charles Village
Studio- $600-730
1 Bedroom $680-990
2 Bedroom $1100-1400

Charles Village is more expensive, but its safer and food and drink within walking distances, plus Hopkins is building a butt-load of buildings there and a Strip Mall is comin in 2 years. If you have money, i recommend you to Buy/ Mortgage a row house or apt in Charles Village. My friend bough a 2 bed 4 years ago for 67K, he got an offer for 144K last week. It will only go up.
As for transportation, crotch rockets are often stolen in baltimore so becareful. you can see some real gangstaz riding around baltimore doin wheelies too (on the mini bikes as well). If you live in CV(charles village) motocycle would be great to get to school unless theres heavy rain ro snow (baltimore snow is slushy messy and have hidden ice patch under them.)
BTW, closer you live towards pratt and ST Paul/Charles, the rent is expensive, try adding 100-200 to CV rent.
Joey Bag, I got that same letter like a month ago, and i m in the same boat. Kinda weird. let me know if u know more about that.

Joey,
That's strange. I interviewed there at 1/11 and got mine in 2 weeks but then again, I'm a MD resident.

I don't know if this is the case at UMD but at Buffalo and Tufts, I heard that they don't look at your FAFSA info unless you are admitted. If you have gotten your Financial Packet from them, I'd assume that you have been accepted.

I got my acceptance in mid-Jan but I haven't received any financial packets or anything.

Good luck. Hopefully, we'll see each other at the White Coat ceremony.

Is it safe for a girl to live near campus?

I wont have a car next year, so ill have to rely on public transportation, do you think it would be cheaper and safer to live near campus or to live in charles village, where I would be taking public transportation at night?

thanks for all the advice by the way... its really helpful

Well I'll jump in here. I'm actually only 10 mins away from the dental school. I've applied, interviewed, but no acceptance yet🙁

Anyways, I used to volunteer at the University Hospital, across the street from the dental school. The campus is very safe, the university police are usually patrolling the area. I've never felt scared or anything close to that on their campus (i'm a guy btw). However, a couple blocks north of campus.....things get a little sketchy. Most students live within walking distance to the school, and they are never really afraid for their safety. There is the housing behind the law school that is brand new. Its almost like a dorm with secure entrance and all, that would possibly be my first choice if they decide to ever let me in.

Baltimore isn't the best city, but use common sense and you'll be fine. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Anyone know how the apt. complexes match up roomates?? I was lookin' at those university suites at Fayette Square that are no more than 3 blocks walking distance from the school and 2bed/2bath are goin' for 885-995 and 3bed/3bath go for 787-887. This is the place that has the attached parking garage also. Anyone start lookin' for places around the school? Let me know if anyone is and if they are lookin' for roomates. Studio's are substantially more expensive and I figured it would suck livin' by myself not knowing anyone since I'm comin' from Florida. Just let me know! 😀

Alright we're startin' to slack a little so I thought I'd try to start this one back up again. I just wanted to try to meet at least a small group of people I'll be having classes with starting in the fall. Where is everyone who is attending Maryland coming from? My name's Bryan and I'll be makin' the move from Florida so it's going to be a change for sure. I'm still lookin' for anyone potentially interested in havin' a roomate and living right near campus.

I'm excited about the new school being done (hopefully on time) but also about livin' in a city since I've never done that before. Well hopefully we can all start talkin' a little cause if I definately wanna try to make these next four years as fun/enjoyable as possible instead of tryin' to kill eachother over good grades like some other schools. I love surfin' which hopefully can turn into snowboarding starting next year, runnin', liftin' weights, playin' doubles beach vball and basketball. I'm gonna stop cause this is startin' to sound like a dating add. Look forward to talkin' with ya'll!

We should definitely try to keep this thread alive... its getting drowned in the other soandso_class 2009 --> i will do my part 😀

im really excited about maryland 😀 and i agree with the "lets not kill each over grades" its all a process of natural selection... we all come in, totally motivated, and start working, a month goes by, and the slackers start will start to slack off, the procasternators (thats me) will take a breather, and then youll have a keeners wholl keep working... so no need to compete, it all works out in the end 😀

anywas... thats really cool you surf hurley, i always wanted to learn, too bad you will be in baltimore, but we should take a class trip to the beach... virginia beach?? 😀 doesnt compare to florida, but ive heard its decent.

anywas... lets keep the thread going 👍 😛 🙂

Man, I feel like a traitor! I was so excited about the school but was having way too many second thoughts about being that far away, maybe I'm just a wuss. Surfing is one of the appeals of Loma Linda - they get out early fridays so I'll spend my weekends learning how to surf!
Anyways, I'm still excited for you guys, it's an awesome school - maybe I'll apply for a specialty there someday.

Hey D2B where are you from in Canada?? I visited a buddy of mine who goes to BU dental and we took a trip up to Montreal (obviously for an educational experience) and I loved it. haha I've never seen more strip bars on one street in my life. We only stayed a night there but from going out just one night it was beautiful. The next day we went to some underground mall which was kinda cool too.

Yeah I've been surfing for 8 years or so now. I'm the home grown florida boy who saw snow for the first time on the same trip i took up to Canada. I'd really like to try my luck at snowboarding if someone is willing to teach me. Of course we'll take some trips to the beach. Never been to any of them but I can't go a long time without drinkin' a beer in the sand'n sun 😀

For anyone, where are you lookin' to live? I'm lookin' downtown right around the school for the first year at least till I get to know my way around. Any good spots to look?

USUAgs bro you don't have to feel like a traitor, I'm sure something at Loma just appealed to you excluding the distance thing which is still a huge deal. I dont think it's hit me that I'm movin' so far from home yet haha. Take a trip to UMB and we'll drive a little south, throw on a couple wet suits and we'll get you surfin' in no time.

Is anyone having trouble creating an account on the public user forum website? When I choose a nickname and password, aren't you supposed to receive an email so that you can activate your account? I'm asking because I've attempted to create an account a couple different times and don't receive an email. Is your nickname suposed to be your social # or something simple like that? Just wonderin' if I'm the only idiot having trouble. Thanks

Where are all the Marylanders at this is poor! Just kiddin' 😀 Just wonderin' when ya'll were headin' up to B'more. I'm still in the process of finding a place to live so I guess depending on when I have to sign a lease is when I'll be finding my way up there. I wanted to ask also who is thinking about bringing a car with them? I don't know much about the city or what it's like livin' in one but I thought maybe as long as a supermarket was close by I wouldn't need a car. Some of these apts are asking about 100bucks/month to store your car in a garage and I thought that for how much I'd actually drive around it might be some money I could save since I'm paying an arm and a leg already. Let me know what ya'll think cause it would be nice to have a car if we wanted to take a roadtrip to the beach or somethin' with all the spare time we'll have.

Hey man, if you're worried about parking and bringing a car, bring a not so flashy or new car. When you come to baltimore and plan on trying get instate tuition in the following years, go change your license the first thing to MD and register your car in MD. After that, rent a place in baltimore and then bring proof of residence to the baltimore parking authority or something (its at the 1st Mariner Bank Area) to get street parking pass, its 40 dollars a year. Its moderately safe to park on the street, juss dont put any change or valuables in the vehicle. as long as you use a club or something, your vehicle wont be stolen. gluck

hammertime: do you know how we can change our residency...?? I was hoping to change my drivers lisence, etc and seeing if that worked to get instate tuition... do you have any ideas?

Hurley: moving to baltimore in july, thats when my lease starts... my place comes with parking spots... you should try and find the same

Where are you living that comes with spots? Most of the places that I am looking at provides either a garage or a open lot to keep your car but its all for a fee. Are you living right downtown by the school or on the outskirts?

Hammer- is it real tough to get residency after the first year or so? I figured on changing my license, vehicle tag, voters registration and stuff right when I got up there. I know some states are real tough on kids gaining residency when they are in the state for school purposes only. Also, some states require you pay taxes to that particular state. Any insight on that? Appreciate your help bro.

so this is how I got residency in MD,
after graduation, I worked in Maryland, so I have a job and pay MD taxes.
I changed my license, tags, registration, and voter registration to MD.
I know people who didnt get residency in Maryland because in their tax files, their parents continued to put them down as dependents causing conflicting information.
Best way to do this is to maybe get a BS job at UMD, ie library or something on the weekend like feed rats and thus, paying MD taxes and make sure your parents dont use you as a dependent to get back extra returns.
That should count you as a MD resident after 1 year and then apply for instate tuition when the time comes.

I hope no one has snagged that rat feeding position yet 🙁 Thanks for your help bud I'm just trying to find every way possible to make it so I can start paying instate tuition by my second or third year.

Well at least there are 2-3 people keepin' this thread alive. Won't be too hard to make friends right?

Anyone doing the summer research program at the world's first dental school?

im gonna travel 😀

Yeah I was thinking about that two but decided against it. It is something that I would like to do over the summers but no the one right before we start. Hopefully goin' out to Cali for a week and spendin' my finals days in Florida surfing and fishing. It's probably stupid but I like Maryland cause its coastal. I can't be landlocked or it drives me insane. Hopefully we can all get some big class roadtrips south together and drive to a beach.

I know there are only a few people keepin' this thread alive but I really hope to have our class come together socially and not just be a bunch of tools that only show up to class together. I'd like to make these next 4 years as enjoyable as they can be. We need to make a group that is in charge of the D1 social activities on the weekends or at least a night over the weekend when we have a little free time. Get some cookouts for football games (still gonna try to get to hear my gators play) and basketball games to mix things up a little. Let me know what ya'll think! 😉

question for you all. I interviewed at UOM a month ago approximately and they still have not made a decision... Is this normal?

Sorry Mob I don't know exactly what kinda of timeline they are on up at Maryland. I applied way early and went up there back in November. Where you from in Fla? Didn't know if you went to UF and maybe we had a class together or something thats all. I got waitlisted at UF too, SOB's 😉 . Nova is beautfiul though and even though I'm from Vero Beach, Ft. Laudie is one of my favorite places in florida. Should be fun if you decide to stick with that.

hey mobius, i m in the same boat as you. i wish they would let me know to make my decision on where to go much easier and start setting up shop.

Hey hurley, sorry I didnt see your post about housing. I got a place near campus, once of the house... you should look into that, they are cheaper than the apartment buildings. Go to the housing site,
http://www.housing.umaryland.edu/ads/index.cfm

go to view ads, I found the place on one of these...

Im with you on the making things fun... its gonna be a stressful, we will all need to chill... and roadtrips are a great idea. D1 social committee will rule the class 😀

unfortuantely no. first and foremost, you must reside in maryland for one year prior to receiving in state consideration. the earliest would be D2.

I am in the saem boat. I am going to get a place and be moved in June 1, start working, change my liscence, register to vote, etc...and keep my fingers crossed.

Also, a good site for apts is www.craiglist.org. In addition to looking at and contacting the ads, look for those with rental agents listed and contact them directly. I have doen this and when end of April comes around, I am going to meet up with for a day or two. This way, they will know what I am looking for and by the time I meet with them, have a bunch of places to look at.

I did this when I was looking for a place in San Francisco (where Criagslist began) and it worked out really well.

In terms of a D1 Social committee...woo-hoo! I am in!

I'm totally with you on the driving to the beach. I'm from PA, and I'm trying really hard to get in state tuition...but this summer I'm living in Ocean City Md which is just the best of both worlds because I'll be working in state and can pay taxes, and Ocean City is going to be soo fun...so that's and idea for anyone out there too! look forward to meeting everyone!
