I will be attending UMass Boston's post-bacc program and would like to connect with others who also plan to attend UMass Boston.

By the way, would you suggest that I rent somewhere close to the Red Line?
How about renting really far away like in Quincy? Some places in that region go for as low as $800. For a similar place in Boston or Cambridge, I would be forced to pay $3,500. I understand it takes an hour to get to Quincy by the red line.

I always find that a cost/benefit analysis is the best tool for deciding where to live. If you're in class 5 days a week, 10 hours of commuting (at a minimum, remember - delays happen) is a pretty hefty investment.

I also find these two sites invaluable when rating potential apartments:

http://www.cityofboston.gov/police/stats/ - shows you a crime map for the area. A good rule of thumb is more crime = more dangerous. Keep in mind there will be inflation along Boylston and in Fanueil (or other tourist areas)

http://www.walkscore.com/ - gives you a score out of 100 that rates the addresses walkability, which is based on a variety of factors e.g. proximity to public trans, super markets, bars.

$3500? This isn't NYC, man.

I think you may need the help of a native. Some serious misconception here. You can definitely find housing in the center of boston for ~1200. You can get housing at the apartments right next to UMASS for that or less. Not only that, but to get to the UMASS t-stop is a lot less than an hour. Quincy is not far away, its more like a ten minute drive without traffic because of the direct highway connection. Depending on where in quincy you are it's on the order of fifteen minutes on the T. That plus waiting for the school's shuttle bus puts you a half hour away tops.
