UMASS News??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't heard anything from UMass yet, but I'm trying to put together the financial aid stuff. When I was submitting the FAFSA I couldn't find the code for UMass, is there one?
I also couldn't find anything on the website about financial aid. What's the deal with that? I know it's cheap but I still don't think I can afford it without some aid.

Thanks.

Do you think it's necessary to fill this out now or wait until I hear back?

I didn't know Dr. Lecter was on the faculty at UMass. What class does he teach?

🙂

Seriously, thank you SO MUCH for this information. I'm leaning heavily toward UMass... ha ha, sounds like something a dean would write to me in a waitlist letter. But there's a strong chance I'll be in Worcester in the fall (and maybe even in June... maybe even tomorrow if the weather's nice.) he he, I'm keeping it fondly in mind.

Seriously yaah, rock on, thanks for the information. Odds are about 99% that I'm at UMass next year, so I'm getting excited. I'm hoping that some friends and acquaintances of mine get in as well, I figure knowing one or two people in advance will make the class seem even smaller than it is already. This weekend I should be able to meet up with my family and get all the information that got sent to my home in the last couple weeks, including the summer research stuff. I'm getting excited, it's making it harder to get motivated to work on my thesis now that I know that I'm all set for next year. But, work I must, so here I will end.

March is almost over and still no word from UMass (post-intervew). I interviewed first week of november. Bad sign?

Same here and no. Many people started hearing last year towards the end of April.

That is so frustrating, I am extremely tired of this waiting game. I can't think of anything else.

Anyone know if writing a letter would help at this point?

I just wanna get in. 🙁

Yeah...I know this guy who applied twice to Umass, both times he interviewed and was rejected within a month after the interview. I interviewed the first week of Feb. and still no reply (I sent my 2ndary app. on the last possible day it could be submitted [had to be post marked and everything 🙂 ]). I have no clue if that will help(writing a letter)? Does anyone know?

A question: On a lot of the 2ndary apps to other medical schools, they ask you if your parrents work for the university....now my mom does. She got a doctorate from Umass and she's been a full professor for 20 years...BUT umass didn't have that on their 2ndary app!!!!! Would there be a decrete or indirect way of maybing telling them or would it not help?

Thanks

The med school is a small enough place that if your mother's been there 20 years, they'll know without you telling them. 😉

Why did you wait so long to fill out the secondary, hoomsy? I can only see it hurting your chances of getting in. And bruinrab is right, they probably already know that your mother is there, and if they don't, you could have name-dropped at the interview. While frequent name-dropping is something I frown upon, there are situations when it's appropriate. "My mother's entire career has been here" is usually a safe situation in my book.

Bruinrab, I would recommend writing the letter. It certainly couldn't hurt, and if there is even a slight chance it'll help, wouldn't you want to take it? But don't be disheartened anyway. I know personally about 4 people who interviewed there a long time ago (a couple of them before me even), and none of them have heard word yet. I suspect that there's a lot of action coming up with UMass very soon.

OK, I'll write a letter. I was leaning towards it anyway, because I just wanted to do something, but you're right, as long as it doesn't hurt, why not? Like I said before "I just wanna get in 🙁". I have a whole long story about why, but so does everyone else. 😛

You think wanting to be near a sick relative would garner any sympathy? :hoping Dr. Paraskos remembers treating said relative:

I just went looking through mine yesterday. Are you planning to do it? What projects are you looking at? I have a list of 8 or 9 that seemed interesting either because of (1) interesting subject matter or (2) interesting work to do. I think there's a good chance I'll try to get into the program, but I'll have to get moving on finding housing.

Since I am a grad student here and have been for five years, feel free to PM me about any research labs you are interested in if you have any questions. I am in Dr. Michael R. Green's lab, HHMI Program in Gene Function and Expression.

Hi... Well I just found out that I have until next tuesday to decide if I want a position in chemical engineering for grad school. I have not heard from Umass yet....Should I call them and ask if they could give me an answer soon?.....I just don't want it to be september and I don't have somewhere to go (either being med school or grad school).

Thanks

Damn, that doesn't sound good. Sorry to hear that. I interviewed a week after you did and still no word. I'm guessing they picked their 100 if they are starting to waitlist

Hey accepted students,
Did all of you get the email today about the health forms and the orientation?

I still haven't decided on UMass yet (though I'm getting close.......) but I think it would be fun to go up to Maine.
Funny story---my boyfriend is a white water guide in Maine and he says the UMass group goes the "wimpy" way on the Penobscot and bypasses some of the best rapids!! Made me laugh.

Getting all of the health forms, etc makes me realize how close we really are to starting school.

Yeah, I'm definately excited about the trip to Maine. I'm almost definately (ok, definately ... I 'm not the most decisive person) going to UMass. I'm very excited ... I got in to some "higher ranked" places, but UMass has a great rep and is a lot cheaper.

The housing costs in Worcester are also really cheap (I've heard like $300-315 if you live with other people), so that helps. I can't wait to meet my classmates, as I've heard that the students at UMass med are cool!

Hey precisionplus

Do you mind me asking you what are your stats?....I interviewed on the first week of feb...I haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks

OK

:scared:

The people who were waitlisted and or accepted...what was your GPA/MCAT scores and what universities are you comming from?

I haven't gotten anything yet, that's why I'm curious.

Thanks

Hoomsy

To be honest, those stats are not going to tell you much. In terms of GPA/MCAT, my bet is that everyone who interviewed is competitive for admission. There are also people from top schools that are ultimately rejected. The letter stated that all 100 spaces have been offered.

G0S2,

sorry 'bout the waitlist... but we need you down south anyway! 😀

Thank you!!! It's just tough when I can get in out of state in Texas, which is a great school and have a more difficult time getting into my own state school where I am currently a student. Believe me, I am going to biting at the chomp to meet you all in Texas. Go see the Alamo movie!!!

I would hope that we had to be competitive to get interviewed. But I fear mine was more of a courtesy interview than anything else. 🙁

I guess...but on www.review.com says that umass sends out 2ndary apps to everyone who applies and interviews 1/2 of all applicants who send a 2ndary app application. Doesn't seem that you have to be TOO qualified to be interviewed. Were your letters sent to your Mass address or university address?

Thanks

Hoomsy

According to the dean of admissions, he told us during the interview that they expect to receive 1000 applications of which approx 500 will be interviewed. Of that group 100 will be accepted. I have no idea how many people are put on the wait list. Almost every medical school sends out a secondary. So, 50% interviewed is not bad. I would say it competes for the best odds.

Also got a waitlist letter yesterday. Interviewed 12/9.
Any ideas what are the chances of getting off it?

There are no guarantees of course, but from what I was told, last year they ended up sending out around 300 acceptances before they finally got their full class.

I thought that at the interview they said that they accepted 150 last year. I also remember the dean saying that half the class is from the waitlist which makes it 150 total acceptances.

just saw this: (re: research fellowship information packet)

I am sending the application form. I found about seven projects that stood out as particularly interesting and narrowed it down to five. Strange though that they use a lottery. Keeping fingers crossed.

I don't think it's anywhere near 300, unless last year was an aberration. The year I worked in the admit office I signed maybe around 125 letters. There are always people who are accepted in the last couple of weeks before school starts in august though, so even if you are still on the waitlist when july rolls around, don't completely lose hope. I guess there are some who just either 1) continue to hold multiple acceptances (and pay the deposits!!) until it no longer is tenable, or 2) decide after the whole process, in july, that med school just isn't for them.

My bad. As I look at it now that I'm a little more awake, it seems rather high. Maybe that was the number of interviews from a couple years ago. Oh well, that's what I get for posting when I'm half asleep.

Have there been any acceptances since people have been receiving waitlist letters? I still have not received anything...and I'm wondering if I still have a chance for an acceptance or should I be expecting a rejection.... Plus, no one answered this question...where do they mail out this letter to?....Your university address or your massachusetts home?

Thanks

Hoomsy

You all seem to be saying that they "accept 125." So, then do you mean that they send out 125 acceptances, and then waitlist some people beyond these 125? I wonder how many they waitlist...Also, do you know what fraction of the waitlist is ultimately offered a place in the class?

I know for a fact that UMass doesn't overenroll their class. So they will never have more than 100 acceptance letters active at any one time. So if it was 125 the year yaah was working on letters, then that was the grand total that got letters that year. As for the accepted fraction of the waitlist, I would assume it would change year to year depending on how much people who are accepted really want to go to UMass (and who wouldn't?).

To Yaah and others that may be able to shed some more light on this process specifically at UMASS: if you have not heard anything from UMASS post-interview is that a good/bad sign?? I did a quick search on UMASS posts from previous years and it seems like they send out waitlist notifications around this time (Aprilish) and then only acceptances and rejections come in May? Can anyone confirm?

Thanks,
Blueboy

Blueboy,
I really have no idea about what to expect to hear now and later in May.

When I interviewed in Oct, they told us not to expect ANYTHING until Late March/April. I was waiting to hear then but I got an acceptance earlier than expected (in Feb if I can remember?..) Not sure what there process is, but it looks for my group things were pushed up about a month or two, but some of the posts above indicate waitlists for people who interviewed earlier than me. Can't really figure it out based on what's going on here.

Sorry not much help, but thought I'd add my 2 cents..

No mail at my university address today....waiting to see if my folks got anything at home....no one has answered the question if the acceptance/waitlist/rejection come to your house or your university address?

I think the address they mail to would depend on the address you indicated as your prefered mail address on the AMCAS form

I'm not a student anymore, but my interview and acceptance letters came to my house where I live now (in Maryland). Some of the fin aid info went to my parent's house in Massachusetts b/c that is my "permanent address" in terms of residency and FAFSA, etc.

Just call and see what address they have on file.

greenie 🙂

I interviewed in mid Januray and received my wait list letter at my house on Friday.

yeah just called...they said it would be sent to my school address...which could take sometime since im in canada 🙂

thanks

Anyone get any news?..Still nothing in my mail box.

Hoomsy

Nothing here.

I'm not really expecting good news anymore.
