For discussion of the school noted above. This includes questions, etc. Threads will be merged in here if they are created on their own.

We are doing this to cut down on the traffic of threads so it makes it easier for people to find information about a school.

Anyone else excited to hear back from UMDNJ? Paula said that the adcom meets on the third Friday of the month, which happens to be in 3 days! Supposedly last year they called a few people after they met at around 4ish. I was so impressed with the school, i really hope i get the call!

O jeez...I have an interview there on Thurs...I wonder if that means they'll be reviewing my file that Fri, or if I'll have to wait another month...

They only review apps once a month? I still haven't gotten the secondary so I'm not quite in the same position.

The secondary is available on their web page. I went ahead and filled it out as soon as my last letter arrived on my own, but I'm not sure if they want you to wait for approval or not. Couldn't hurt to start writing the essay though either way

I didn't even think to check there. I've still got a few more to take care of first but I think I will work on that one afterwards. Thanks!

Did anyone on here interview today? How'd it go?

i interviewed at umdnj today and it was sooo laid back. i had dr. krueger and a 4th yr and they basically just had a conversation with me. i felt like i was asking most of the questions. they said we would find out within a week, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed!

you guys looked like you had a lot of people today.

i think there were about 10 of us today...it definitely was a bigger group than i expected

does anyone know what time the adcom is meeting today? this wait is killing me and i don't want to call and ask just yet, it may be a little too early in the day...

Hello,

I just got through having a meeting with the dean of admissions (I am applying next year) and she was saying how there are already more applicants this year than there were last year in total 😱 Anyhow, on to the more pressing issue....she said they were meeting shortly (and this was around 11am EST) so I assume they are meeting right now 🙂luck:😕😀) or within the next couple of hours....I imagine they would want to notify you guys by the end of the day so I don't think they will meet any later than 2pm. Good Luck....it is really an AMAZING school!

:luck::luck:

ahhh... im freakin out rite now... they could all be talking about my file rite this second... this is nuts....how am i going to wait until the end of today?!

neone goin crazy like me or is it just me? this school is really my #1 choice so im getting so much nervous than i would be with any other school... neway, i really hope we find out sooner rather than later...

you're not the only one! Just remember, there is always the chance that they won't call everyone and instead send a packet in the mail with the acceptance.

These meetings can go on for a long time. They usually do not get done much past 4pm. However, they do not like to make phone calls on Friday because they cannot get to everyone and they do not want phone calls at 5pm.

You guys may have to wait until Monday. Sorry.

but hey, good luck. I am sure you guys did well.

no way! I was the OOS interviewee

could the first person who gets a call from umdnj post here so we know that the adcom mtg is over? thanx..

waiting like this is by far the hardest thing i've done in the app process...

i just got a call at like 3:15 from Dr. Krueger saying I'm in! i'm so excited! i don't know if they're calling everyone today or not, i can't even think straight i'm so excited! but, goodluck to everyone else...i'm crossing my fingers for u!

do you mind sharing your stats(mcat, gpa, mdapp)?

i had a 23 mcat (bad i kno) and a 3.7 gpa. i think they really liked my shadowing experience with a umdnj alum, and also my ECs. hope that helps! goodluck!

very high MCAT, middle road GPA

Hello - does anyone know if we can send LOR's from a D.O. to UMDNJ SOM?

I looked through the application and cannot find any mention of a required or recommended D.O. letter.

Did anyone else send one to them?

Thanks!

It isn't required or recommended, but that doesn't mean you can't send them one. You could include it as part of the required pre-med committee / adviser letter. If you wanted to send it separately, I doubt that would be a problem. Why not e-mail them and ask? The admissions staff seem really nice in my communications with them so far. I'm sure they'll help you out with any questions you have regarding letters of recommendation.

I had the D.O. I shadowed this summer send his letter separately to UMDNJ, and I just got accepted last week. So I would say, if you think the letter will help your chances, then definitely send it in! Goodluck!

Did you get something from them about submitting recommendations? I have heard back from all the schools I applied to except that one. Does that mean they rejected me?

I wouldn't think so. Or at least I hope not. They are still the only school I have not received a secondary from either.

I dont know if they send out secondaries or not? Its available to download off of their website. I just filled it out and sent it in.

I thought someone on here said that you can fill it out but they prefer that you send it in once they ask for it. I guess I could always contact them but first I'll finish all my other secondaries.

they do send out secondaries via email, however, their essay prompt is online, so by all means work on it, then wait for the email to arrive. =)

PS. AACOMAS completed my primaries late July, and i believe i got the secondary from UMDNJ late August/early September.

Hi,

I have been reading SDN forums for quite awhile, but have finally decided to join as a member.

Anyways, my question is: are there any current UMDNJ students here that can share the PROS/CONS of UMDNJ-som? I have had my interview last week in Stratford,NJ and am excited to hear more about the school from current students, with regards to curriculum, residency placements, grading, student life, etc.

(I know there was a post like this before, but the input from students at UMDNJ-SOM were from 3-4 years ago. I also feel that PCOM students are more active on SDN, while UMDNJ-SOM students don't post often here. Your help would be appreciated)

Oh, and I don't imply anything when I said that there seems to be more PCOM students here. I just know that more information about PCOM is posted, while I seem to have a hard time finding out about UMDNJ-SOM from recent threads.

read my post history along with Nate's (his screenname is "Nate") and you'll find out a lot about the school. pm me specific questions and I'll answer.

hey guys, im thinking about applying to umdnj for osteopathic medicine and i was wondering if i can pay in-state tuition if i live in new jersey (as in I rent a place in new jersey since i am currently a nys resident). do i have to change my driver's license and stuff as well in order to pay for in-state tuition? or will it not matter? please, someone let me know what qualifies as an 'in-stater'.

also, hows umdnj in terms of board pass rates and % of students going into specialties (both do/md residency)?

is it possible for me to go in a residency in texas after my 4 yrs of medical school? there are some people that i know that live there and i would like to have my residency there.

thanks for the answers..

:edit:

after searching about in-state tuition, i found the answer here:
http://www.umdnj.edu/oppmweb/Policies/HTML/StudentServices/00-01-25-15_05.html

However, i still have a question. One evidence that you need for in-state tuition would be a driver's license (only right?) but is getting a NJ driver's license really simple? Can i be a NYS resident and still get a NJ driver's license? Also, i will be using a car but it will be under my parent's name so i am not the one owning it. would this be fine? Will getting just the NJ license be enough?
if so, i think umdnj is going to be my top choice. thanks!

Does anyone know if UMDNJ invite OOS applicants for interviews? do they only favor NJ residents??? im just wondering what my chances are...

As a state school, like the rest of UMDNJ, they tend to favor in state applicants. But they certainly interview and accept OOS students. UMDNJ is a great system. If you have good credentials, then you have good credentials. Go for it. Worse case scenario, you're out a few bucks.

Yeah...i really like the school and Im hoping to get an interview..im just waiting to hear from them ....good luck to you!

Little axcious, right now.
latest MCAT result sent in on the week of 9/12. Everything else was complete. Still no word from the admissions committee😡.
Is this because I'm an OOS?
or are they going to send me the thin envelope?
Losing my patience....

I had some Ws in the past but strong record from last two years.
I got interview from PCOM, MSUCOM, LECOM, but no word from NJ? why~?
oh, no word from NYCOM either(but I hear they start reviewing later and I forgot to send the LORs.)
hum...any thoughts?

I would not be concerned at all. I was complete in early July and still have not heard anything. I did call them last month and they said that I would most likely receive an interview (it is the only school I have applied to that has not granted me an interview). I am also from out of state, way out of state! My anxiousness about a UMDNJ interview has decreased substantially, however, since I have a few acceptances already. I would just be patient, there is really nothing else you can do... as an out of stater you wont get too much love even with good stats. Good luck!

Hey guys,

I had my interview for UMDNJ-SOM 2 weeks ago, and I am expected to hear back from Paula on 10/19.

I am too excited and can't wait any longer. I know that from the interview feedback section here on SDN, students wrote that 85% of those interviewed were accepted at UMDNJ-SOM. Is that a true percentage?

UMDNJ-SOM is def. my first choice and I really really hope I get in. If any current medical students know of this statistic to alleviate my anxiety of waiting, please please reply.

Thanks!

congrats to those who interviewed! may i ask what your stats were? oos?

Hi, for those of you who have completed the UMDNJ som secondary, how long were your supplemental essays? Honestly, I can't think of much to say besides a paragraph each (1/4 of a page) for each question. Give me some suggestions please. Also, did you guys double space?

THANKS!

I don't remember exactly what the essay prompts were, but I wrote the full page or so that they allow. And while I don't think there is any rule or anything against double spacing, I don't think anyone does it.

Granted, you don't always have to use up all the space they give you in these essays. But if the question is something like "why medicine?" (That is part of what UMDNJ-SOM asks, yes?) then you should be able to write a good deal about it. These essays are a chance to sell your self to the school and make yourself more then just a collection of stats. So you should make the most of them and avail yourself of every opportunity to make yourself a strong applicant.

If you are having some trouble with the actual writing itself, instead of just diving into the bulk of the essay, you may want to first jot down some ideas. What do you like about medicine? Why not some other field, like research?" "How did you come to decide that medicine is right for you? Do you have clinical experience, whether it be work or volunteer (you should)? What did you like about it?

And give examples. "Show, don't tell". This is quite important and helps fill out those essays. If, for example, you write down that you like medicine because of the interpersonal aspects of the patient doctor relationship, give an example of your experience working with patients to back it up. Like problem solving? Explain how you solved a particular problem. So, it's not just a matter of simply answering their essay, but backing it up with strong, relevant examples from your experiences.

Feedback is very important as well. Do you have a professor, family member, or friend whose opinion and feedback you can trust in this matter? Someone who doesn't look for things that are wrong in your writing (though that is part of review too) but looks for ways that can make it better.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Does UMDNJ send a secondary app. to everyone that applies or do they have a preliminary screening? I know that LECOM sends one to everyone and most other schools do not. Just wondering what UMDNJ stands.

The secondary is actually available on their website, although, some people on here were mentioning that you can only send it in when UMDNJ emails you about filling out the secondary. Not sure which thread I saw that mentioned in. You could try a search or call the school.

isn't the purpose of the personal statement to address this? i kinda didn't want to rewrite what i already wrote so i wrote about half a page, specifically on my interest on osteopathic medicine.
