Hi,
I received an invite for an interview. Can some pl. tell me if
DO students and MD students take classes together, except for the OMM?
Disection or Prosection?
How many students per cadaver?
Are lectures video taped?
Is attendance mandatory?
IS there a dress code?
Can I do some classes PBL and some in-class?
Do I need to have all pre-reqs completed by May or is summer session ok?
I ask because I don't have any behavioral sciences.
Other than the low tuition, what are some other aspects you really liked about UMDNJ?
Where do students go for rotations?
How many semesters is anatomy? One or Two?
Thanks!

*No MD students on Campus

Disection or Prosection?
*Disection

How many students per cadaver?
*5

Are lectures video taped?
*We record everything on a system called Camtasia. The system records the audio and everything the professor does on the computer.

Is attendance mandatory?
*Yes

IS there a dress code?
*Neat and Clean when not seeing patient. Business when seeing patients and representing the school

Can I do some classes PBL and some in-class?
*No. But in the new curriculum you will have 25% less class time and 25% more self study time. So kind of an integration of both

Do I need to have all pre-reqs completed by May or is summer session ok?
*Prior to starting in August

I ask because I don't have any behavioral sciences.
*You need it.

We have one of the smallest class sizes. The professors know your name and will do everything that they can to make you into a physician. The school cares about what the students think and will work with us for what we would like to see. There is more, but these should be questions during the interview and tour.

Where do students go for rotations?
*Kennedy Health System (our hospitals) Our Lady of Lourdes and we have a North Jersey Tract where you do all but Geriatrics at Christ Hospital in Jersey City.

EMT2ER-DOC, regarding the new curriculum, I've also heard its 25% less class time. But quick question, would you perhaps know the schedule of the new classes. Right now, I know its pretty much 9-5, so would the new in-lecture time be 9-3?

I absolutely loved SOM, but the one and only drawback was the 9-5 class times everyday. I interviewed at other schools where students finished by 2, sometimes noon, and were able to study/do whatever for the rest of the day.

It is 25% less class time and which gives you more time for independent study. This is all to add more case studies which you will do in small groups. I do not know when the new classes are, they do not put out that schedule until Late spring

Hey guys
So this is my inaugural sdn post... just so anxious/excited about my recent interview that I decided I needed feedback from my peers and esp those of you who are current UMDNJ students.

So I just interviewed last week. Very excited since this is definitely my first choice school. I'm in state, have good numbers, and amazing ECs, esp when it comes to leadership experience. I made it very clear when asked in my interview where I really wanted to go that UMDNJ was my 1st choice and that I intended to practice in NJ regardless of where I went to school.

My main concern/question... pretty much the first question they asked me was "what other schools have you applied to, and where have you gotten interviews/acceptances from? " They specifically asked if NYCOM interviews me yet... They seemed very interested in what my status at other schools was. I did tell them I've had several interviews and one acceptance at an Osteo school. I have no idea why they'd ask me this. The doc I work for said it was because they want me and wanted to know their competition. I certainly HOPE so! But I have no idea, and honestly this question kinda threw me off. Has this happened to anyone else? Any insight?

Good luck to everyone else who has interviews this month!

hey I'm interviewing on the 14th. Anybody else interviewing that day? Does anyone know when we are expected to hear back from the adcom??

They asked me about other interviews/acceptances as well (oddly enough they specifically asked if I had interviewed at UNECOM yet). I guess it's just one of their "standard" interview questions.

BTW, I'm curious as to what sort of research options are available at UMDNJ-SOM. EMT2ERDOC, do you know how much research is available on the campus? Is it at all possible for SOM students to get involved with research going on at other UMDNJ campuses?

The adcoms usually meet on the 3rd Friday of every month, and you usually get called that day if you've been accepted.

There is plenty of research available. Sometime in the fall, a letter goes out to students are interested in performing research with a list of the projects. From there you contact the lab heads. Or, you can ask your professors what kind of research they do and if they have a spot.

You can do research where ever you want, especially over the summer. But if you do it off campus, I would suggest you rethink about it because the time commuting to other facilities could be used better.

Attendance is not mandatory (no swipe cards or anything..for certain classes like professionalism they have a sign-in sheet because that is mandatory...all basic science/lecture courses are not mandatory).

Anatomy for our class will be spread out over the entire year so it will be two semesters not one.

I am a NJ resident and I sent my application in around January 2nd, does anyone here know when I can expect to hear if I have been granted an interview or not? Thank you so much.

Thanks, how many semesters of OMM?

Does UMDNJ SOM send email or mail for interview invites in addition to phone calls? or just phone calls?

Thanks, how many semesters of OMM?

OMM will still be two semesters but it will be organized according to what system/block we are on at the time. From what the professors that teach OMM have told me it really won't change all that much from what and how they teach the students now it will just more or less be re-organized to fall in line with the new curriculum.

maybe april, cant remember, but its one of those two. But you still have a chance if ur interviewing in those months

remember that they have expanded the class size to 120 students for class of 2013 as well (12 additional seats). so don't think you are interviewing for wait-list....you still have a good shot 👍:luck:

From what I heard they have interviews going on into May...

Did you go to Philadelphia airport? Is this the closest one to Stratford, NJ?

If you can find a way to avoid the under 25 fee, renting a car is probably better, if you know the area or have a gps. If you are 25 or over, a rental car is definitely cheaper. But after my other experiences with traveling and renting a car, i decided i didn't have enough time or patience to rent one.

I ended up paying about $100 in shuttle and cab fees.

What are the chances of getting accepted from the waitlist if you are in the top 25?

Did you receive a call from them today about that status??? Thanks

Nope, just wondering from a previous update. I'm not sure if they call to update you or if you have to call them to get your status.

My phone call came at about 4:45 in the afternoon...don't give up hope yet!

Thanks!...I'm really hoping for a monday call. I liked the school alot and it's my top choice. Congrats to everyone that recieved a call today.

Im worried they wont do the calls on Monday... its a holiday. Anyone know if the office is closed that day?

They will not be open on Monday. I am a grad student there and I spoke to Ms. Burton yesterday about it.

Anyone hear anything? Or more specifically, does anyone else think/hope the meeting ran extra-long and every wanted to get outta there b/c of the 3-day weekend?

Haha
I feel the same way. I did not hear anything, and I hope they ended their day early! I know that's what I did at work today😉
I know some ppl on sdn heard today, but like a lot of the people I met at my interview day told me, they didnt get their call until after the weekend. Lets keep our fingers crossed! Good luck!:luck::luck::luck:

ps thanks for updating me on the Monday office closure, I guess we're waiting for Tues! I live in DC area and to me Tuesday is also a holiday, but I don't think New Jersey will be quite as affected by this inauguration insanity that is happening down here!

Ok, I finally scheduled my interview for next wednesday but I can not find good flight tickets. Nothing for less than a 1000 bucks! So far, I did not pay more than 350 for a plane ticket. I guess the short notice did not help. Should I reschedule?

I would not. Where are you coming from? Are you flexible in your flight plans?

The cold country (MN). Unfortunately, I can not be flexible. I am still finishing up course work and I have a kid. So, I need to get back right away.

Ok, looks like I found a ticket. It is kinda' strange- this school did not send me hotel info. Where did every one stay? I hear the neighborhood this school is in is not that great.

Any one? It would help me a great deal as I have never been to Philly area.

I stayed at a Days Inn in Cherry Hill, NJ. It was OK, if a bit pricey. The neighborhood surrounding the school didn't seem too bad (but then again I'm from downtown Cleveland, so my take on this may be a bit different than most).

Thanks, I called Days Inn and they have a shuttle service to their place. So, that will work for me.👍

Unless youre from "The OC" and uncomfortable with anything other than that, this neighborhood is fine, that is unless you plan on staying in Camden
Seriously though, I don't know why the Stratford area gets any bad rap, it's like any other suburban area that I've ever been too or lived in for that matter. You should be fine, and like a previous poster commented, Cherry Hill is rather ritzy in some areas and for that matter probably expensive. Just don't stay in Camden!

The area that our school is in, is fine. We are in a suburban environment. It just looks a little worn and the township of Stratford is trying to revitalize. However, of all 3 Campuses (NJMS, SOM, and RWJ), we have the least problems with crime.

If you are a looking for a place to stay, you can also look at a town called Voorhees which is right next door. I believe there is a Hampton Inn that the school uses for its own guests.
