Would current students and/or recent grads please give their opinions about housing in and around Newark? As an incoming D1, the "dorms" seem like a good choice considering I'll be right next to the school. I've heard that during the first two years it's best to live very close to school, and the third and 4th year you can manage a commute a little better. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm beginning UMDNJ next year and from what I have learned, there are a couple of options for close housing. The first is 180 West Market, which is the on-campus dorm. I've heard that it is expensive for what you get, and personally, I have no desire to live on campus. Mentally, I'd like a separation between work/school and home. Probably the most desirable place to live is Society Hill in Newark, which is a set of town homes between the UMDNJ and NJIT campuses. The prices are reasonable and the buildings are nice. Much of Society Hill is walking distance to UMDNJ, as in just a couple of blocks.
For a third option, there is University Center, but you will probably get a lot of undergrad students living there too.

Beyond that, I have it on good authority that you should not live west or south of the school really. The better suburbs are to the north, such as Nutley, and several current students even suggest living in Hoboken, although thats pricier and further away.

If you choose UMDNJ, join the facebook group and you'll see that a bunch of incoming students will be living in 180 West Market, but plenty will also be commuting from off-campus apartments, or even parents' homes.

As for me, I'm going to be looking for a place in Society Hill.

i'm a current first year at njds. i will advice that, the best option is for you to live at the school dorms unless may be you are a married person or has children. myself i commute 30 mins everyday because i'm a non- traditional student and sometimes it's really tiring.
it's really worth it, trust me

Thanks for the tips, Andrew. How do you search for places in Society Hill? On google maps all of the locations are in Jersey City about 5 miles away.

ekumak, living in the school dorms is definitely tempting for those cold winter school days, but I share Andrew's sentiment. Living 30 seconds from work could be pretty mentally taxing.

Go to newjersey.craigslist.org and search "Society Hill" under the housing category. There will be a bunch in Newark that show up. There are a lot of Jersey City listings too, so you have to kind of wade through them all.

Here is an example of a 3br apartment if you decided to live with roommates.

Or to get an idea what the area looks like, Search "Churchman St, Newark, NJ" on googlemaps and go to street view.

I'd recommend living in society hill. I lived in the dorms 1st year, and really didn't like it. Rent is way too much for the apartments you are getting, and depending on what side of the building you are on, many people commonly have $300+ electric bills. It is nice being in the same building as a bunch of classmates and other students, but I've liked living in society hill a lot more.

I live in society hill now, only a 10 minute walk to school. Much nicer and bigger apartment and it's much cheaper than what I payed last year.

Some people may worry about the safety aspect, but it is relatively safe around here. I don't worry too much, even walking home at 10-11 at night. Just have to be aware of your surroundings. You could always drive to school too, plenty of my classmates do that.

Hello, I'm going to UMDNJ this fall and I need some help with housing options! Please help..
I was assigned with 3-bedroom in 180 west market.
I looked around and there are some studios/1-bedroom apartment available on 101 Camden street
(The map says it's right across the street from the school) and University heights.
Both seem possible walking distance from school.
Is living in the dorm my best option still ? as a D1?
Do students live in University heights or on Camden street?
Please advise..Thank you!

I'm an incoming ds too...at this point can we withdraw our application?
