This is my ultimate dream dental school, I will be a second-year undergrad this upcoming fall. My GPA stands at a weak 3.1 (sigh) and I did speak with my family dentist who has warmly agreed to let me shadow anytime (although I was thinking on a daily basis he was probably thinking one or two times). I purchased a Barron's DAT book (is it any good?) so that I can introduce myself to the topics, PAT, etc.

Anyhow I have been reading this forum all summer and I notice not many people apply to UMDNJ. Which is totally fine by me, but I'll admit the number one reason why I would want to go here is its close to home and the in-state tuition.

So can anyone tell me anything they know about this dental school? Positives? Negatives? Why you didn't apply here?

Dtrain1, I don't know anything about UMDNJ, but when you apply, pick up some more schools to increase your chances to get it. On average, students apply to 6-7 schools. You may have perfect scores, but fail an interview. If you use the SEARCH feature on this forum, I am sure you'll find plenty of information on that school.

Good Luck

A friend of mine just finished his 2nd year in UMNJ. It's a great school and he loves it. But if you want to get in I suggest you raise that gpa. It's a highly competitive school to get into.

Apply for the Gateway to Dentistry Program...i did it and it was a great learning experience. UMDNJ is really a great school.

to DTrain1:

Relax. You still have two years to go before you apply to dental school-- Just concentrate for now on maintaining or upping your GPA. Worry about taking the DAT after your Sophomore year of college (i.e. after you have taken courses like Organic so you can be ready for the DAT).

As far as UMDNJ goes, it's a fine school. When the time comes, you should apply to the two schools in New York City too since they are close to you, and maybe the two Philly schools as well.

HTH!

thanks for the response guys. yeah i realize since im only 19 that i dont have to be worrying about the DAT and dental admissions just yet... gotta up that dam GPA tho!!! baahh...

hi!
im gonna be a first year student at UMDNJ. Most people I talk to have great things to say about the school and I'm excited to get started in a few weeks. Tuition is great for in-state students and if you get that GPA up and do well on the DAT's you may even qualify for scholarship 🙂 good luck!
