Hi everyone,

I remember reading about Umich's automatic invites for OOS applicants with 3.8+/36+ (not positive on the exact numbers). My questions are a) has it been verified that they will continue that policy for this cycle and b) does the invite come pre- or post-secondary?

Thanks

i think they sent the invite with the secondary but i'm not sure. it'd sure be nice if they did it this year too!

The invite comes pre-secondary. The only way to find out is through the status website, however. So you send in the primary, UMich emails you the link to the status website, if you passed the screen, your interview invite shows up, and then you complete the secondary. If you don't get an auto-invite, you log in, complete the secondary, and hope for a regular invite.

I don't know if they're doing it this year. Incidentally, the cut-offs for OOS applicants are kinda fuzzy. A lot of people say it is is 3.8/36, but I also received one with a 3.7/38.

Good luck!

the cut off is a little difference each year. You'll have to call to ask.

 You do need to be sure to keep checking your status online. They won't send an email to you to let you know if you've been granted an email.

Good luck! :luck:

Yay! I hope they continue the policy this year.

How about this: the first out of stater to get the automatic invite, post and let us all know. 👍

Also, that's more of a guideline, not a hard limit. I was OOS, below that GPA but above the MCAT and got an auto-invite. So don't get your hopes down just because you 'know' you're below the cutoff.

i received an invite prior to filling out the secondary.

What are your GPA and MCAT's. Any idea re the in-state "automatic" interview cutoffs.

What did sail-crazy mean that they Umich would not notify you?

i have no idea what the cut-offs are for in-staters, but my undergrad gpa was a 3.96, and my mcat was 36s.

i think they actually . . . called? or e-mailed for an interview . . . i honestly don't remember. 🙁 sorry.

sailcrazy meant that you need to check their applicant status page for updates. as in, if you are eligible, they will not email you telling you that they have already invited you for an interview.

I didn't know med schools gave automatic interviews. I was so surprised when I got one today. Does anyone know which other schools give out automatic interviews, or is Michigan the only one?

vanderbilt only gives the secondary with an interview. the secondary's a bitch tho.

So you got an auto-invite from UMich? If so, when were you verified?

Has anyone else gotten one yet?

Also, how's UMich's secondary?

Cheers

I was verified on the 28th, so I was surprised it came so soon. The secondary is not bad, just two short essays. One about what activity influenced you to go into medicine, and one is what would you bring to the medical school.

Yep, that's what I meant. They neither email nor call. (At least for last year.) If you don't check your status, you won't know that you've received an invite.

On the whole the admissions office does an incredible job, and I have very few complaints about Michigan at all. 👍 Personally, however, I think it is a pretty stupid (non-notification) system. It can't be that hard to send out an email... Why make everyone compulsively check their status online? It is bad enough for those who do receive an invite, and a pretty poor thing to do to those who do not. 👎

yea i know what you mean about the non-notification thing. i think i got an automatic interview, but they never notified me and i wasn't expecting it after i submitted the secondary so it was a month before i realized that i even had one waiting for me on the status page. since then, i've been a crazy obsessed internet freak. wait, that happened when i discovered sdn....

Just got an interview offer today too. I actually received an email inviting me to complete their secondary that didn't mention anything about interviews, but upon logging into my account I found out that I have already gotten an interview. Woohoo, first interview invite! 🙂

Hi Everyone, about the automatic interview from Michigan, I know someone with a 36/3.8 that didn't receive an interview (applied late). Perhaps it depends on time of year, or other factors.

Good Luck!

I had a 38T, 3.8 and got no interview love until my secondary had languished for two months. I applied in September, I think, which is super last-minute by SDN reckoning I guess. I was in the penultimate interviewing group and then got a hold on my application, lower tier WL, rejected last month.

I also got the email, and when logging on, saw I had an auto-invite...feels good to have an offer. I have a 4.0/41T.

To those receiving the secondary e-mail, are you in state or out of state? I'm out of state and I haven't heard anything yet.

I would worry if you didn't get an invite, lol.

hey guys, I logged onto the secondary without receiving an email notification. Does it say "No Status" on the status of your application or does it say something different. And where would it say that we already had an interview?

As soon as I log in, I see this screen.

BTW, I'm out-of-state.

Don't have an interview 🙁
This was one of my top choices. Big advantage with automatic interview. 🙁

Crazay, your stats are better than mine. Maybe they messed up and you'll get yours. Good luck!

Thanks, that makes me feel better! Hey homer, is your last name early in the alphabet (I'm digging)? Is there preference for those that get interviews before others?

Thanks

Nope, last name towards the end of the alphabet. But I'm from California; maybe they're going by state of residency?

I am just dissapointed and I would love to have an interview to one of my top four choices. It's a lot easier to make that comment from where you are sitting than where I am sitting.

Strange, mine looks the same except no status and they don't have a checklist to see if a photo is in. Maybe they are not through loading all of my information yet or something. I only found the site to log on from sifting through the website. I guess I should wait for the email invite before I jump to any conclusions. Although I don't qualify for the automatice interview anyways... 😳

I'm not sure where you're getting your info, but there is not a big advantage to an auto interview.

Big picture (September vs. February) yes.
Smaller timeframe (September vs. October/November) no.

Oh, the misery of being a (self MDapps declared) 3.95/40 applicant. :scared:
You sit in such a bad place... :barf:

people in this thread need to calm the f down. if you have above a 36/3.8 then I'm sure you will be fine, regardless of how soon you get an automatic interview invite

If our thoughts were translated into a foreign language, I think we'd end up with virtually the same text! 😉

Welcome to the warm, fuzzy, supportive place that is SDN!

---- EDIT ----
Had to add coco11's as well!
Nice timing

haha, be nice, sailcrazy, he might just be one of your school mates next year.

Question for Homer Simpson / others who scheduled the auto interview- I received a similar "select your interview date" screen when I logged in and then scheduled it for September 8th. Now when I log in it says "Interview(s) Scheduled. Interview Date:" BUT, there is no date listed. I'm guessing that this is something they update once they put my interview date request into the system, but I just want to make sure that I didn't mess anything up. Thanks!!

P.S. The screen shot is attached in case you want to see exactly what I'm seeing. It's a zip file because the upload manager didn't want to take anything over 400x400.

i hope there is a virus in that zip folder. sdn has more tools than ace hardware.

Umm, I'm not sure exactly what you were trying to say. Is there a better way to post large images that I missed?

Yeah, you're right... but I did provide some helpful information before busting Lests' chops about that silly story of woe! 😛

I would imagine that the MSTP interview invites work differently.

Congrats to those of you who received auto invites. Good luck at the interviews.

Good luck also to those who haven't received an auto-invite yet. But please (this doesn't apply to all of you), calm down. Michigan is pretty transparent and helpful with their application process, but they do have thousands and thousands of apps to go through, and they've just finished with last year's class (well actually, they're still working w/ waitlist and such). They may have some secret method of determining who receives auto-invites first, or they may just be going down a list, or they may be going randomly.

I got an auto-invite last year in late July. No idea of when others received them, sorry (try searching SDN). And, plenty (PLENTY) of people who don't receive auto-invites later get invites and acceptances. Michigan is proud of their students, and they'd be less proud of a group made up of just auto-invite students. Michigan wants more than just 3.8/36 (or whatever) students.

Also, even if you don't get a Michigan interview (which I doubt for many of you), the stats I see in this thread are amazing. You all have great chances at many schools. I understand your nervousness and concern, but you are very well off. You are smart, early, and well-informed about the process.

Good luck to all!

Yep, But I'm not applying to Michigan MSTP, just regular MD 😉

I decided to include a few schools as MD only because 1) I am not certain that my research experience will be adequate for MSTP programs 2) I would not mind starting as an MD and transferring into MD/PHD later 3) FOr some schools, like Michigan, I know I would LOVE 😍 to go there for four years as an MD student but would like to test out the waters before commiting to the additional years required for a PHD since it is pretty far from home.

So Michigan, if you're reading, as soon as my AMCAS is verified please have a look at my application and send me some interview love.
😀
