Umich Waitlist

When I called UMICH last week, they said that they would start pulling people off of ther waitlist at the end of this week. It's almost Thursday, has anyone gotten a call this week?
 
Hey....I know for a fact that waitlist at umich has been moving. I talked to the admissions office today and the woman told me they've taken approximately 13 people off the waitlist so far. I think she also said that of these people, some were declining their acceptances. Furthermore, the waitlist is NOT divided into even tiers. So, there aren't necessarily 100 people in tier 1. However, she couldn't tell me how many people ARE in tier 1. Basically, it was a rather unproductive phone call. But I thought I'd share what little information I found out. 🙂
 
Hi! Just thought I'd post what little information I know about the waitlist. I called about two weeks ago and was told that they would start pulling people mid to late last week. Both Hawkeyes and LizardKing (from this board) were pulled last week. (I think Hawkeyes declined his/her acceptance already.) Since then, I haven't heard of anyone else getting off the list, but some people have withdrawn from the waitlist (thanks to you guys!).

I think I'm going to call this afternoon and ask if they are still expecting "substantial waitlist movement." Thirteen people does not seem substantial to me... Do you guys have anything else you want me to ask? Let me know and I'll call late this afternoon.
 
I dont have any new info. I emailed Katie Horne a couple of days ago to ask what is going on with the waitlist and I got an auto-reply email saying the she was out of the office until May 30th. Havent received a real reply yet from her.

When you guys call the Admissions Office, do you talk with Ms. Horne or the people that answer the phones (ie April and co)? I have never talked to Ms. Horne and was wondering if it is appropriate to ask for her.

I am surprised they only have pulled off 13. What are they waiting for? Well..... hopefully somebody will have good news soon and can update this thread.

I would love to know what percentage of the top tier gets in during an average application year. I doubt they would answer this.... so dont bother unless you feel that they are being extra-infomative.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I didn't get a chance to call this afternoon. Work got too busy, but I'll definitely call tomorrow so post any additional questions you might have.

I've only ever talked to April and the other woman who answers phones. I haven't felt comfortable asking for Katie Horne.

hopefully tomorrow's conversation will be a wealth of information... 🙂
 
I am heartened (sp?) about the fact that she's been out of town. I believe that she is the one who makes the wait-list call. I'll bet that she has Poindexter's, Me's, Sprockette's and my application on her desk ready to call, but hasn't yet because she's been out of town!

What was very relieving to me today was the statement by Sprocket that the Admissions Office said that approximately 13 people have been taken off. That is nothing!! I think on an average year Michigan ends up handing out like 360 acceptances or something like that. With a class size of 170.... that means that the waitlist has heavy movement and has barely started.

But I also agree that Ms. Horne being out of town is also a good sign.

UMICH is cool because they don't worry about statistics very much.
 
I am thinking about calling them later today because I dont think I can take this wait any longer.... hopefully I will get helpful information from the Admissions Office to pass along.

Okay, I just called and was wholly unsuccessful. For what it's worth, this is what I found out (unfortunately, nothing new and nothing that seems good).

1. They've had "a little bit of movement" so far.

2. They have no way of telling if they will have "substantial waitlist movement" like in years past.

3. There will not be a time when we can find out any further information about our ranking and our chances. We just have to wait and see what the other applicants do.

So...yeah. Pretty much what we already knew.

I too was happy to hear that they had only taken 13 people so far, but #2 (above) worries me. In the past when I've called, they've always said really encouraging things like "we always take a lot of people from the waitlist" etc. I don't want to be too pessimistic, but maybe they aren't going to have movement this year like in years past. Just a thought. A horrible thought that makes the waiting even harder...

Well guys,

My call did not get any new info. I did get the same feel that Pointdexter did, about their reluctance to say that lots of movement will come soon.

Very generic response:

"We have had a little movement so far and right now the committee is reviewing files. other than that, I am not sure if I can tell you anything that would help. early june should have some movement too. Acceptances will be given by email or by a phone call, or both, and then written confirmation by mail."

I have a general question for you guys: Have you guys noticed how much nicer people in the Admissions Office are at UMich compared to everywhere else?

The people at Pitt are nice too. But other Admissions Offices are mean..... especically UCLA, UCSD, and Einstein.
 
Btw, Katie Horne doesn't always call acceptees. She emailed me. So also check your email!
 
Why are they reviewing files right now? I thought they did that back at the end of March. Weird.

I definitely agree with you, me. The Umich admissions staff are 5 million times nicer than some others I've dealt with in the last few months. Other honorable mentions include Mayo and Northwestern (once they finally got their act together).

My vote for absolute worst: Minnesota. Every single time I got off the phone with any of the staff member (except Dr. Becker), I felt as though I had probably pissed them off so much that they were going to throw my app file away. Anyway, sidebar.

LizardKing, are you going to UMich for sure?
 
Hey guys, I know this is not the real place for this question, but what were your impressions of UMich? I am applying there in the coming cycle and needed some thoughts- people, learning system, culture. Also I am an out-stater applicant, so should I even bother?

Question out of curiosity.

Is UMich your #1 choice?

If so, is your number one choice before you started applying and why?

Or is it your number one choice of the places that interviewed you and why?

Or is it the number one choice of the schools that you are on the waitlists of?

For me, it happened to be my #1 before I applied and after I interviewed. I think UCSF was also tied for #1 before applying but they said no pretty quickly to me.

The phone number for Michigan is 734-764-6317. If you ever lose it, it can be found on the main page of the status check page. I have to look it up every time I call. 🙂

As for my feelings about UMich, it was definitely not my first choice when I started to apply. Actually, I got the interview in December and scheduled it as late as I possibly could so that I could decide at that point if I still wanted to attend the interview. (I was already in at my state school then.) I barely went to the interview, but I absolutely fell in love with the school when I went. It promptly became my first choice. I just got that "this is the right school for me" feeling there.

Come on Katie Horne, call me today!!!
 
I guess nothing new has happened. I dont know if that is good news or bad news.
 
I got an email from Katie Horne this morning inviting me to join the University of Michigan Medical School Class of 2006!!!!!!!

As for the others, from what I know of my student friends who were on the commitee last year they meet once a week and generally are very busy people with full schedules so if its taking time its because it takes time to review all those applications. Good luck to all of you and hang in there, I hope to see you guys next year.

yeah, right now i'm committed at northwestern. i am about 90% sure i'll be at michigan in the fall. i should hopefully have an estimate of my financial aid at umich in a few days and then i'll be able to decide. i was fortunate enough to receive a full-tuition scholarship for the first year from northwestern, and i am actually one of the few people that the debt-capping system works for. from what i understand about umich financial aid, i still think that michigan will end up being cheaper over four years. if i hadn't gotten the scholarship at northwestern, this wouldn't even be an issue--i'd have said yes to michigan immediately. why did you choose michigan over northwestern ultimately, if you don't mind me asking?

it was a very very tough decision. i was all set on northwestern, especially after the second look weekend. then i got the financial aid package. 58k was just too expensive, and with my numbers i would have fallen just short of the debt capping benefits. umich is my state school, so the it was really the finances that ultimately made me commit to umich. i also remember loving umich after my interview, but it was way back in november so i had sorta forgotten when i got my northwestern acceptance. lastly, i thought umichs match list was better, particularly in obgyn, in which i am most interested.

hope this helps! also, i asked for advice on this site in the residency forum. do a search for it. the consesus was umich.

Full tuition scholarship at Northwestern is very hard to come by. I wish I were your position. I let go Umich because i found out that Michigan does not consider you a resident even after four years. Also Umich is much less generous during subsequent years. I did not want to graduate with a ton of loans on my head. Having a lot less loans will now give me the freedom to start my own practice after my residency.

If Michigan ends up costing a little more... you should still go to UMich. It seems like it is the school you would rather be at and in 10 years the cost difference will be negligible and probably forgotten. It seems that you are going to do that anyway.... but just in case the financial aid from UMich doesnt give you exactly what you were expecting... I think you will be happier where you think you fit in better.

Michigan was my first choice before I interviewed, after I interviewed, and of all the schools I had been waitlisted at. I just graduated from umich and love Ann Arbor; I have friends here and my entire family is very close by (which is very important to me at this stage in my life for various serious reasons). I know people at the med school and they seem happy there...in fact, the first year seems to be quite a breeze. I could go on and on about why I want to go there, but that is what letters of intent are for. :wink:

I just wish they'd let me know what my chances are, because I need to start looking for housing for next year, regardless of WHERE I am going. Grr.

Aww, thanks poindexter!! 🙂 I am stillllllll waiting but hopefully not much longer. I am in middle tier tho so who knows? I really liked Ann Arbor when I went there-seemed like a nice town !Anyways, good luck to all!
 
How hard will it be to find an apartment in Ann Arbor if someone gets off the waitlist in July or August? It really isnt that big of a deal, but if someone happens to know....
 
i'm withdrawing the spot i received off the waitlist, and that should directly go to someone else.

Probably not too difficult, housing in Ann Arbor tends to be pretty expensive (more so than you would think, seeing as how it's not a big city. But housing around the med school is pretty available, you can find someone with a condo looking for a roomie, maybe the med school frat houses will still have room? You should be fine 🙂

And LizardKing YAY again to us being classmates next year... 🙂
 
maybe I should fly to Michigan and sit in the Admissions Office until they get so annoyed.... they give me a final answer (acceptance or rejection).

I don't understand. To me it seems as if the waitlist is moving super slowly. They are still on tier one and it is almost the end of june. I dont see how they could possibly move through tier two (which in my guess would be even bigger) by july, even though they say that they usually get to the top of tier three by the end of the summer. Anyways, I am confused and losing all hope as each day goes by! 🙁 <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" /> 😕

I just thought I'd let you all know that I was accepted today (actually, the email was sent 6/19) from the umich waitlist!!! I was told I was at the "top of Tier 2" so those of you who are in Tier 2, keep your chins up and keep checking your email. 🙂

I sent a letter of intent in March because I figured maybe it would help me out with waitlist placement (incidentally, I don't think it did). I sent an update in late April/early May to send my last semester grades and final cumulative GPA and re-affirmed my intent to go there. Other than that, I didn't really do anything. Oh, I emailed Katie Horne earlier this week to inquire about my chances of getting in, and she sent a very discouraging email in return that made me feel like I was never going to be accepted! But then she sent another email the next day saying I was in. 🙂 I later found out that several people rejected their acceptances right after I had emailed and they all happened to be women. Maybe it helped that I had shown interest by emailing, I'm not sure.

Oh, she also said that about 30 or so people have been taken off the waitlist so far. 🙂

For all of you that got accepted off the waitlist, did you status change on the status page? If so, what did it say?
