Hi All,
I applied to UNC chapel hill's neuro program at the recommendation of an attending I worked with who used to be part of their hospital system and was just offered an interview. What I read about them interested me enough to apply, but I was wondering.... do any of you have experience with UNCH? Any opinions on their neuro training? Would love to know before I schedule!

I only interviewed there back in 2005 for neurology...but as no one else has answered you yet I'll take a crack until a better answer comes along.

I was impressed. I thought they were "up-and-coming" and I was happy with the volume of fellowships they offered (particularly Sleep). Most subspecialties of neurology seemed well represented.

The area seemed beautiful, and the quality of residents they got seemed above average. Everyone looked really happy.

Was anything bad? The facilities (5 years ago) seemed a bit run-down. By far the biggest drawback at the time was the paucity of neurocritical care. Perhaps they've fixed this in the interim.

I'm one of the current neuro residents at UNC. I'd say that overall, we have a pretty solid program. Keep in mind that there have been some significant changes made to the program over the past few years (implementation of a night float system, a recently-opened neuro ICU, to name a couple). Whereas in the past, UNC neuro might have had a reputation for being a very laid-back program, the current chairman and residency director have been actively making changes in the program in an effort to improve the reputation of UNC and to improve residency education so that graduates of the program will feel more comfortable "flying solo" when they leave UNC. These changes have led to more work and more responsibility for the residents. On the other hand, you also learn a lot through the sheer volume of patients that you see. By the time you graduate from the program, you'll probably feel quite comfortable managing any acute neurological issue that comes your way.

If you're not afraid of a little hard work, and your goal for residency is to become the most competent neurologist that you can be, you could do a lot worse than UNC!
