UNC MED Program Summer 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If we don’t get an email decision today then I think we won’t hear back until Monday. It’s Good Friday tomorrow and doubt they’ll work. Whatcha think?

@GDTBATH16 First of all, there is only one true God, and that is the Lord of Light.

Second, shoot, I just realized that too, tomorrow is good friday... I hope they do send it as per what it currently says on the site.. At what time of day did they send you the email last year?

So is it an email or an actual letter in the mail?

My friend who did med last year said that decisions will be an email sent out during the evening. (According to last several years)

Maybe they’re working. I know my kids still have to go to school.

Hi guys!

I am praying that everyone here gets in!
I also have a question.

So, I know that my chances of getting accepted are not too high, but in case that due to some miracle I do get accepted. Do any of you know if we can defer? Or will I just have to reapply next year? I have been volunteering at this lab for some time and they just offered me a paid position, that specifically requires me to work during the day for this summer and for the following semesters I can make my own hours. Since I was just told about this I don’t know if I should take the position and defer my acceptance (if I can) or do the MED program if I get in.

I have been wanting to call them but I have been very lazy about it so I apologize for asking you guys instead.

Hi GDBATH16,

I checked some of he previous forums about the program on SDN and there was one person who said that they did deferred their acceptance, but I am not 100% sure if that meant that he actually could just start the program the next cycle or if he had to reapply.

I will try to call them tomorrow but I am not sure if they will be working.

I am praying you get in this year though, you deserve it!

Hm, that is one heck of a dilemma you guys have in front of you (Assuming you get accepted, hopefully you do).

I don't have a perfect answer, but the three questions I would ask are:

1) Is UNC the school you want to attend/top choice? Is the school you want to attend in North Carolina?
2) Which Cycle do you plan to apply
3) What is the purpose of doing the job/research?

If your answer to (1) is Yes, then it's a no-brainer imo. UNC MED will give you your best shot at getting an interview there and subsequently getting accepted. Also, while the UNC MED program is fairly well known across the nation, it is especially significant to other schools in North Carolina. So if your top choices are here, UNC MED is still your best bet.

There is some lee-way though. if (2) you plan to apply NEXT cycle, that is, next summer, then you can just do MED next summer, as you apply. I don't see why they wouldn't let you defer an acceptance (or reapply with a strong chance of admittance), unless for some reason your candidacy becomes worse next summer which is virtually impossible haha. By next year you should have done more things, so there are more reasons for you to get accepted. If you're applying this cycle, then I would strongly recommend doing the program now.

If (3) the purpose of the research is to get published or at least do some presentations/conferences (i.e. stuff you can discuss at full-length during an interview), then it may be worthwhile to consider choosing the research over MED. I say this because the main factor in the admissions process is classes you've taken and grades, then MCAT. Research is secondary to those, if not tertiary.

I def agree with calling them and seeing what's up though. And while you're at it, call the research folks and ask if they could give you a 2-month break while you do MED.

I would wait to see if I got in first, then weigh the options. If you guys are applying this cycle, I’d say do the program. Plus you get a stipend.

I'm so nervous and excited!! I know I'm not the only person who has been checking their email almost every few hours. I was beginning to get nervous that I did not get accepted because I hadn't heard anything yet but seeing this thread just made my day and now I realize a lot of people haven't heard back yet. I'm in the same boat as a lot of you. The only difference is that I applied to medical school last July and did not get in anywhere. My undergrad wasn't horrible but for med school it was ..I did a post bac for 1 year before I applied to med school and ended up with a 3.7 science gpa ...but even with a 3.7 post bac science gpa my overall was not where I wanted it to be ...I still applied though. Currently I'm doing another post bac program...I have 2 more months before the semester ends and I have a solid 4.0. I'm hoping I get accepted into the MED program to further show admission committees that I am capable of excelling in higher level science and math courses. I'm rooting for all of you and I hope I can help answer any questions as well.

Hello,

Wow! I admire your determination! With all the hard work you’ve put in I am sure you will get in this year! And yes I also have been checking my email a lot! I am hoping we all get accepted!

Thank you @rosa1 !! I'm praying all the hard work pays off. Good luck! I'll be sure to post my results once they send the email today

Hey everyone, I just checked their website and it says that today is a holiday and no classes will be held. Now, I'm not sure if that is inclusive of the faculty and staff, however if it is, then I don't think we will be hearing anything until Monday.

Thanks for the update @NSU2DDS ! I think I'm gonna stop checking my email every 30 min and just wait until 6pm to check. If it's nothing up there by then, then I'll assume Monday will be the day as well.

Hello, I am kind of in the same boat as you. What is your second post-bacc program and where is it at? I am planning to do another post-bacc during fall and any advice would be helpful.

Judgement day is postponed?

WE HAVE MORE TIME TO REPENT FOR OUR SINS MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS

I'll see everyone on Monday when we're all checking this forum by the minute.

Haha! This literally made me laugh! I needed it to help relieve my anxiety! You’re too funny!

Same haha! I find it especially funny that the poster's name is dfire. There's a coming Judgement by fire and brimstone I guess..

@FutureDoccc hey! My second post bacc is at NCCU, Im not obtaining a degree just taking classes to make my science gpa go up even more. The major I picked was chemistry since I graduated with a biology major. My mistake was once I graduated from my undergraduate school I only did a post bac program for 1 year, its best to do it for at least 2, that's why some students just decide to get their masters instead which is fine too but the gpa does not go towards your undergrad gpa which is why I didn't want to do a masters. Also the cost is substantially different. Once your done with the post bac go ahead and take at least 3-4 months to study for the MCAT. That was another one of my mistakes, I took the MCAT immediately after my first post bac and while my score wasn't horrible I'm also not in Medical yet mainly because of my score. Make sure you stay connected with your science professors so that they'll write awesome recommendation letters..shadow a physician durin your time in school and volunteer! Sounds like a lot but hey we're trying to be doctors and we know doctors aren't the average human being lol

I once again got waitlisted. Good luck to everyone. Have a big exam at 10pm. Don’t have time for feelings. Ill be applying again next year. Those who get in please share your experience if you don’t mind.

Thanks

I haven’t gotten any emails yet about the decision . To those of you guys wondering if you can defer your acceptance, you can. I have had a couple of friends to do it in the past.

So some people received a decision and some haven't so far. Do yall think they are going in some order? Alphabetical name? Date of application submission?

I think I was rejected... that's when they ask you to fill out a survey about feedback on your application right? The wording of the message was a bit strange.

Hey guys, I just got my acceptance letter. Apparently we all got it at the same time. If you don’t see your email, check you trash mail or junk mail because that’s where a lot of people are finding it.

Looks like I’ll be joining you guys @Nephrology4life @Ween and @Os19 !!! I’m so thankful for the opportunity. @Os19 Im pre-dental too!
To those that got waitlisted or didn’t get in, don’t give up! There is more than one way to achieve your goals! We will all reach our goals in our own time.
I'm so thankful for this opportunity as well! can wait to meet you all.
