Hello all! 🙂
I am a rising sophomore at UNC, but considering transferring to NCSU to major in animal science and be surrounded by people with similar intentions of vet school. Any opinions on which school might better my chances of getting into vet school? (Not necessarily NCSU's vet school)

Also, has anyone had any experience with both UNC and NCSU science courses? Which would be easier to get better grades (I'm going to study my behind off either way, so I'd rather end up with an A 😉)

Also, one more question... do you think an animal science or biology major would better my chances of acceptance? I realize acceptance mostly depends on GPA, great scores from tests like GRE and varied volunteer experience, but would either major have any benefit.
Just wanted some advice & outside opinions! 🙂

Neither would have any real impact on your chances of acceptance. Go to school where you will be happiest and major in what you will enjoy the most. Just complete your prereqs and do well.

I agree completely with the statement above. As long as you get the pre-req's done and are active in a school you really enjoy stay there.

maybe consider cost as well. if one is significantly more expensive, that might be something to think about.

If you're enjoying yourself at UNC, I really wouldn't transfer - but if you're not enjoying yourself, or really want an atmosphere with a lot of pre-vets, NC State definitely has those aplenty. If there are any particular classes you're wanting to take, you can always use the Interinstitutional Agreement to register for them - it's just a bit of a hassle to drive into Raleigh two or three times a week.

I go to NC State, and though I'm not a AnSci major, it is definitely the popular one for the pre-vets. Everyone I know who is has really enjoyed a lot of the classes, especially the upper levels.

Just to reassure you, there are several UNC grads in the class of 2013

I went to NCSU, and majored in zoology (didn't get accepted at NCSU- not enough diverse experience). You really won't be around the pre vet environment unless you force yourself too. I imagine its the same at any school- unless you put yourself in an environment, you won't actually experience it or enjoy it.

That being said, only transfer if you have a real reason. UNC is a respected school. If you feel the science courses are sub par (the general consensus amongst my friends, both UNC and NCSU, was that NCSU had a better bio program). But neither will inflate your grades- its the teachers that really determine that, not the program as a whole.

So stay where you're happy, unless you have a specific reason to transfer. Being a NCSU graduate won't get your preferential treatment at any school.

The pre-vet environment can be really stressful or overwhelming, too, with the competitiveness, especially if its more concentrated than another school. I'd say if you're happy where you are, there's no reason to move. If you're an NC state resident, it doesn't matter where you went to school.
