under-represented minority groups

hi.

Sorry for the stupid questions, but can someone please explains what is the term "under-represented minority groups" means ?

black, white, asian, hisp. group ?
poor, rich, smart, stupid group?
WHAT ? WHAT ? WHAT ?

what makes a person qualify as a "under-represented minority groups" under law ?


please, we all mature adults here...no sarcastic please!

I see a few posts regarding minority issue?

underrepresented minorities (at least in terms of medicine, law, and in some cases, undergraduate admissions) = black, hispanic, native american

overrepresented minorities = asians and whites

if there are any other URM groups, please add.

never knew whites were a minority. i learn something new each day 😉

hehe jk. i know it was just a simple mistake.
 
URM = African Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans and mainland Puerto Ricans

URM does not include all hispanics.
