Hi all, first-time poster. I know there have been other Underage Alcohol Citation Threads on here, but most of them seem to be a freshman year mistake or something. Unfortunately, I received a citation last month for Underage Drinking and I am a Junior applying to medical school this year. How will this affect my chances of getting into medical school? I know med schools sometimes look past a citation early in someone's college career, but will the timing of this citation affect me negatively? Or have med schools finally figured out that college kids drink?

Not a deal breaker unless it's a DUI, but they'll probably ask at an interview. One of my interviewers recounted his own tale with an underage ticket.

Yes your underage drinking citation is poorly timed...however...your last statement pretty much sums it all up. ADCOM's know college kids drink (legally or otherwise) and while its obviously not going to help you, as long as you disclose the information it is most likely not going to hurt you at all. The most you might get is an interview question about it and as long as your honest and show regret for making that mistake you should be all good.

I don't even think a DUI would be a deal breaker depending on how old it was and no other alcohol related offenses on your record. But, it all depends on the school.

Actually, a suggestion to all of our pre-meds by our pre-med advisor, ironically, was that if you do have a misdemeanor as minor as a drinking citation, you can often go down to the police station and see if you can pay a "fee" to get it expunged from you record. According to her, this usually works itself out.

Though I'm not quite sure of the legal precedence or if this is just an Illinois deal, it would not hurt to try... especially if it will ease your mind!
