Does anyone have a link to a page where I can see undergraduate colleges represented by a particular class in any med school?

Here's one. I made the mistake of looking at this list the night before my vandy interview. I attended a very large Top 10 public school (one which has only one!! vanderbilt matriculant in the last 6 years) , and started to doubt my chances after looking at this. Even with the confidence stemming from my competitive GPA, MCAT, EC's, it's disheartening that there is a huge element that is working against me, one that is more of a function of my parents' income than anything else. Taking one look at this, it's obvious that there is a heavy bias towards private institutions at VUMC. I figure about 75% of Vanderbilt's medical students attended a private undergrad.

Thanks for listening to me vent. I had to get that off my chest. I'm done now.

Yeah, I've heard that Vanderbilt prefers to accept individuals from prestigious undergrads, the vast majority of which are private not public.

Well at least the University of California system is pretty well represented, especially UC Berkeley and UCLA

Heh. Their URM population is <5%. The lowest URM population from the top 20's. That says something about their admission committee.

I doubt they intended for that to happen. It's probably just b/c Vandy doesn't attract too many URM to apply.

Nope, Vandy's class makeup is among the least diverse in the country every year. UVa and many other Southern schools are the same way. Postulating on exactly why it's this way opens up a whole new can of worms...

or maybe they discourage URM's to apply?

go Bears!

I didn't apply to Vandy and I can't say whether or not they are particularly URM hostile but a friend of mine, who interviewed at Vandy, told me something that floored me. During her interview, her interviewer asked her, "So, have you considered applying to any of the black medical schools?" So she is black AND her grades, test scores etc. are on par with asians and jews so this wasn't an "I don't think you're qualified based on 'objective' criteria" statement. Interpret as you wish.

woo for me! my school aint there!! oh well, guess i can be the first.

Well, evidentially, I've heard here at Vandy that the med school is so content on being in the top ten, that in order to give themselves the "undergrad stats" of being a top ten school (like Harvard, JHU), (3.7+ GPAs, 34+ MCATs) they're hesitant to accept those with lower GPAs (unless you come from a private institution (of course!)) including those who may be URMs. It's all about rankings it seems, but don't take what I've said for a grain of salt. Who knows. I've met with some of the admissions board and they seem like nice people in all honesty.

i dont care about urm's, actually i prefer that they dont give any preferences to the minorities unlike some schools, because that may take away my spot. But still this is very interesting data. I would like similar statistics "which schools are represented" for some of the northern schools, i.e. schools like dartmouth or nyu or boston u, etc. The reason being is that my school, mcgill doesnt have a single person to vanderbuilt... And i hope its not because my school's reputation sucks so much. I myself doubt i would want to go to vanderbuilt, because i think south is not an interesting place to live(i'd prefer to be closer to montreal), but i would feel better if they wanted me to go to their school anyway.

please post such data for some of the bigger medical schools from the northeast! Because i think this is a good indicator of your undergrad reputation. But im not sure if students from northeast are so willing to go to the south. The exceptions are the ivyleague schools, because the students that go there might be originally from the south.

people from ubc and u of t have gotten into Vandy. so you are fine.

despite popular belief, eg by ucla undergrads, from what i can see, uc's like uc undergrads!
