So I'm not sure what to do about undergrad housing next year, seeing as the dorms really only have enough room for the incoming freshman class. Some second years still stay, obviously, but I'd like to consider my other options and conduct a general poll to see how the stats sway.

Please mention any personal experiences (bad roommates, horrible management, etc.) that led you to vote the way you did. Thanks!

Oh, and I also want your input about going off and living in an apartment with friends, because I'm really not sure this will give me enough privacy. Obviously I definitely don't intend to do anything of that nature in medical school (single studio room all the way), but undergrad is a completely different scenario. Any and all input welcome!

EDIT: And just so you all have a frame of reference, I went with a double dorm room using the roommate matching service, which I think turned out quite well...for freshman year, anyway.

Here's my take...

Living on campus has it's advantages because it is REALLY easy to stay involved in organizations. Freshmen at UGA are required to live on campus, so it was nice to become active while living in the dorms. However, it's nice to have more privacy of living in an apartment, and I was able to continue my extracurricular activities throughout college anyway.

My second and third year, I lived in an apartment with friends. It was pretty tense at times because people naturally have different living styles, preferences, and expectations.

My fourth year, I lived in a single-bedroom apartment, and that by-far was my favorite living situation. You can study when you want, watch TV when you want, have friends over when you want, etc. without having to worry about disturbing any roommates.

please please please please please ask the people in your own school. an internet survey will be less helpful than asking the people that go to your school in this situation

Stay in the dorms it's easier to meet people that way. you can do teh apartment thing later when you have a group of friends.

whether you do single or double depends on how much money you are willing to spend. i would prefer a single but in reality it was much too expensive for me to choose that option.

This depends entirely on you and your school. Generally though living off campus is less expensive and you get a lot more living space. Some schools it might be worth it to live on campus others it won't.

I personally perfer to live alone. I had some fun times when I was living with others, but I perfer the privacy and 100% guarantee of no drama when I get home from school/work.

Alot of it depends on your financial situaton though. I love living alone, but it does tend to cost extra.

If you go with an apartment; the best way to avoid somewhere with bad managment is to ask those living there what they think. Not sure-fire by any-means, but it helps to get some input on the situation.

I would live alone as well, if at all possible. It's a beautiful thing.

Thanks for the input so far, everyone! ;P

I don't mind having a roommate, but only because we're not friends...we each do our own thing, but remain respectful and decent to each other. And, again, it's much cheaper. 😛

Most of the results are for getting an apartment with friends, but nobody has really commented on that. Why this option? I honestly don't think I'm going to be able to stand living with friends. 🙁 So on the one hand I feel left out, but on the other hand I realize it's just going to stress me out way too much.

For those of you who say single dorm or studio apartment, which one would be better? I really want my own kitchen and way more space, so I'm leaning toward apartment...but was thinking of finding some non-friend roommates to keep it cheap. Any input on that?

Whichever is cheaper. Personally, I would go for single-dorms, but these can be expensive.

Getting an off-campus studio apartment would actually be cheaper than the double dorm room I'm in right now! And I'd get TWICE as much space, plus a kitchen and my own bathroom. The only thing is I can see it potentially becoming very lonely, and quite annoying walking or biking the 5-10 minutes in cold, rainy winter weather.

It's just difficult for me to weigh the pros and cons theoretically...so anyone in my predicament, please explain your vote with a comment. I'm sure everyone has been through housing issues at some point!
