Hi everyone first time poster here,

I had a question regarding undergrad and post-bacc gpa.
say i had a 3.0 upon graduating with a B.S. degree and i take a few more post-bacc classes (some retakes and some other science classes) and got a 3.8. Will my overall undergraduate gpa in the AMCAS be higher than a 3.0? (like 3.2 or something) and make it more competitive for med school?

In other words, I need someone to help me explain this whole post-bacc business because I don't really understand how it is factored into the whole gpa process. Thanks a lot🙂

Another question:
Where can I take classes after I graduate in order to improve my undergrad GPA?

Thanks for the quick reply,

Could you please elaborate on the DIY upper division science courses? Is there a minimum time commitment required for this? and where are these types of classes available? Thanks

I am looking at graduating next June (2012). However, I might need an extra quarter to finish up some classes so I'll officially be done by the end of next year (Dec 2012). Because I am also doing research at the same time, I want to take some classes for the first half of 2013 (might retake a class and take some other science courses) hopefully to raise my gpa by a little more before I plan on applying. I have read in other forums that you need at least a B- for the prerequisite classes--is that true?

Also, I've been reading a lot in the post-bacc forums but they are mostly about SMPs.
Sorry to write such a long boring post but I just need more knowledge and advice on how to make the most in raising my undergrad gpa

Do you have to graduate by Dec. 2012? Can you stretch your graduation out more? That would be the best thing to do, if you are able to, rather than graduating, then doing a post-bac. Just throw a bunch of upper-division science classes into your schedule and space out the classes needed to graduate (don't throw so many in that your GPA tanks, of course; you are shooting for an A in every class from now on).

You want to get A's in your pre-reqs. That said, a C here or there will not completely kill your chances, but a C in a pre-req will obviously hurt you more than a C in an unrelated class. If you get below a C in a pre-req, you will definitely want to re-take, and get a solid A the second time. Mediocre grades in pre-reqs can be compensated for by getting A's in upper-level classes, to prove you can handle the material. If you have the classes completed already, I personally wouldn't bother re-taking anything at a C or better, unless you have more than a couple C's in pre-reqs.

I did a DIY post-bacc to raise my GPA. I was heavy on the biological sciences (because I didn't take anything past basic bio for ugrad) and mixed in fun/interesting classes so that I didn't get too bogged down in the science stuff. PM me if you want specific details or why I chose the classes I did...

Hey CopaceticOne, I'm curious to know what courses you took and why. I'm guessing there are others if you don't mind posting in another thread or something.
